The history and concept of open source thinking, and how peer-to-peer methods of collaboration, openness, and transparency can be applied to performance and artistic production. Setup social media accounts and discuss more advanced techniques in Wordpress.

Week 4: February 4 – 10

The mediated transformation of the body, the man-machine dialectic, mechanical utopias and dystopias, the cybernetic organism (cyborg), and the use of the Webcam to engage with and manipulate the persona.

Virtual Bodies in the Third Space

Week 5: February 11 – 17

The psychological and conceptual dimensions of the third space (networked space), notions of distributed presence, the dissolution of the object, disembodiment, the immaterial, and the intimacy of the telematic embrace.

Week 7: February 25 – March 3

The desktop as a medium or stage for live performance, including concepts and strategies for live, streaming forms of media manipulation and collaborative interaction.

Webcam Mediated Communication

Week 8: March 11 – 17

For the last remote class, we will discuss the idea of Webcam mediated communication: how the local and remote are collapsed through audio-visual communications and actions in the third space. We will also prepare for the work by Helen Varley Jamieson with a virtual workshop, exploring and developing the performance to be created and performed for the upcoming Art of the Networked Practice | Online Symposium.

Cyberformance with Helen Varley Jamieson

Week 10: March 25 – 30

A presentation/overview of the work of performance artist Helen Varley Jamieson, including a workshop of the new piece to be performed at the Art of the Networked Practice symposium the following week. Special Time Format Remember that this week's class has a special time format:
  • 5:00pm - 6:30pm: Helen Varley Jamieson is speaking in the Library Screening Room
  • 7:30pm - 9:00pm: we will meet in B1-14 for a full rehearsal. Everyone in Media & Performance is expected to attend both unless you have a conflicting class. The second half is "mission critical, ” so make sure you are attending the full session.

Symposium Performance

Week 11: March 30 – April 7

A new work by Helen Varley Jamieson will be performed via Adobe Connect for the opening night reception of the Art of the Networked Practice symposium: 7:30 pm - 8:00 pm SGT, Tuesday, March 31. Be sure you are in the ADM Lobby at 7:00 pm SGT, or for offsite students, ready at your computer at 7:00 pm SGT. Everyone should be logged into Adobe Connect at this time. Remember there will be no class during our regular meeting time on Wednesday, April 1st.

Week 12: April 8 – 14

Everyone will bring their final project materials to work on during class. I will review the materials and provide individual feedback and critique. Be sure you are prepared to work in class during the full three hours and have with you all media, software, and any other required materials.
