In the age of the Internet, artistic collaboration is increasingly becoming a collective activity that bridges artists, cultures, language and geography. The Internet Bridge project invites students from the School of Art, Design & Media at Nanyang Technological University to collaborate with students from the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts (TAFA) to create a multimedia communications collaboration that explores historical, temporal, geographic and cultural similarities, differences, and resonances between Singapore and China. Using the WordPress online platform, students will contribute images and texts that document specific locations of particular cultural significance. The locations might be ancient, contemporary, historical, transportational, architectural, monumental, industrial, popular, etc., or even just have everyday significance in the life of the local culture.

The project is intended to collapse distance and geography in order to dissolve cultural and technological boundaries via the Internet, art, and social media. Students from each school will photograph a specific location, choosing one photo and writing one text that best articulates the site’s cultural significance. TAFA students will email their photograph to Prof. Randall Packer (rpacker@zakros.com) no later than Friday, October 21st. Nanyang Technological University students will create a blog post on their site, incorporating one photo with accompanying text, using the category “Internet Bridge” with the slug “internetbridge.” All work will be uploaded to the project’s WordPress site to construct a collective narrative that bridges Chinese and Singaporean culture via the Internet.

The intent of the project is to explore symbolic or ritual meaning of place as it relates to local history and culture, and to share its meaning and significance in the collective space of the Internet: a participatory, networked, geographically dispersed “third space.” The Internet Bridge project is intended as a collective artwork, integrating the artistic work and sensibilities of an international group of art students. The outcome of the project is to produce a bi-lingual Website and multimedia e-book that documents the project.
