I tried different themes in every sketch because I want to create a drawing with not only art skills but full of story and emotion as well.

The 1st sketch: The idea comes from the social problem “internet addiction” . A teenager’s hand is trying to hold the hand of computer. The dark negative space means that he doesn’t care about the school work, even if he got F in the exam. But then I found that the idea is boring.

The 2nd sketch: The theme is about old memories. This is the old house which I have lived with my grandparents when I was little. But now, the river has been polluted by factories upstream, the uneven slabstone path has changed to new asphalt, and the old houses have been demolished for government use. Then I grow up, standing on the bamboo bridge which has also disappeared and watching the place I used to live. I use pen to bring the texture out, to make it more likely to be an old house.

The Final Piece: This idea is from my own experience and I think it is meaningful to draw it out. The story is that the guy always keeps silence when he has a cold war with his girlfriend, the girl tries really hard to muster up her courage to talk with her boyfriend but with no respond. I worked on drawing the details for a long time to make the story clearer. The girl’s hand is more slender, fragile and brighter while the color of the guy is dark and he grimaces stubbornly in pain. The negative space is full of clouds, hills and road to show a wide space and long distance between them. It means how the girl musters up her courage to talk to the guy. Also I use strong contrast on these two figures to make the figure stand in front of us. These details all help tell the story.
