Through this semester, we have reviewed the works of several video and media artists that contributed significantly in the revolution of media and the Internet. We learned about some of the key concepts that goes behind the creation of these works, and how they relate to the advancement of technology at the time. We also learned how media and technology Read more →

Excellent Hyperessay Joan! I thought it was very interesting that you found the Videofreex most relevant to your own interests because of their focus on capturing the social and political events of their time. All of the other artists were very focused on social interaction, but the Videofreex began as a collective with intentions to document the era of the Vietnam War and other cataclysmic events of the time. And you are right, the Videofreex were perhaps the most revolutionary for being among the first video artists and documentarians to take on the primacy of television, particularly with the pirate TV station they setup in Lanesville, New York. I was very impressed with your analysis of your cross-stream project. I liked that fact that you were very detailed in fleshing out the process you went through, and even though the results were not exactly what you had in mind, you worked hard to explore what was possible, and made many creative decisions to work around the issues. I also thought the timeline at the beginning was very well done, very thorough, and you reviewed many of the key ideas, concepts, artists, and artworks we discussed. My only comment is the conclusion. When you say you learned many things about communications, I would have liked to have seen a more complete statement that goes beyond a list of concepts, but rather, how through social broadcasting, you were able to better define the kind of interactions, problems, issues that are inherent in our communications environment. Something to that effect. Otherwise, this is an excellent essay, very well written and researched.

Media has been a controversial subject throughout the history of mankind. It has brought about many debates in the past decades. These are my key takeaways of social broadcasting concepts I learned through our micro-projects & classes:

“Alternative” Media: Giving Community a Voice Tools for Communication & Collaboration Interaction & Identity Extensions of Ourselves

Excellent essay. I thought the following was a very compelling theme that you explored throughout:
We are fundamentally social creatures who want to be recognised for what we do.
I completely agree and the power of social broadcasting is how it transfers the conversation from a monologue to a dialogue. The Videofreex, as you point out, broke the one-way nature of television, the monologue, in order to create a two-way interaction with the audience, the dialogue. And I like very much how you broke down the essay into alternative media, tools of communication, interaction and identity, and the extension of ourselves. Each of these categories represents a break from tradition, the shift to more powerful forms of individual and collective expression. I was glad to see that you found moments of interest and humor in your piece. I thought it was a great idea and resonated with the idea of how to humanize online communications in amusing but powerful ways. And I think you captured the essence at the end of your essay, wondering who is on the other side of the screen, if they are real. And in fact, with social broadcasting, we do break through and find ways to communicate, interact, and achieve something greater that allows us to extend ourselves. Excellent work.

This module introduced to me the idea of social broadcasting and the great lengths of what it could do. When first told that we have to do live broadcasting from Facebook Live, I dreaded it and was rather skeptical about having to do it (still am) since it’s something that I would probably never ever do if not for this module. Excellent Hyperessay! You really covered all the material from this semester and synthesized it very effectively. I particularly liked this comment:
in current days, with so much information and content disseminated so freely, one is so easily distracted, we switch between the various tabs so often in a way if we were to visualise it, it might possibly look something similar to Jon Cates’ video piece.
One of the goals of my teaching in Internet Art & Culture is for students to see how their everyday online actions constitute performative actions, which when seen as artistic expression, can transform our relationship to the online medium. You saw this perfectly in the work of Jon Cates. He isn't doing anything you and your fellow students haven't done already, except he is doing it purposefully and intentionally as performance art. Overall this is an excellent essay. My only comment would be to bring the various strands of your argument or perspective together in the conclusion, which concerned the Cross-Stream project. Aside from the glitches, how did the spontaneity of the Videofreex inform your project, or how did the desktop performance of Jon Cates, in which he multi-tasks and changes orientation effect your performance, or the collective nature of the body project, the Adobe Connect project, etc. I do really like your closing statement, when you say it was "perfectly imperfect," or you could say the "right kind of wrong," etc. That's an important observation and one you might consider developing further in your work.

The thoughts that comes to my mind about social broadcasting is people introducing their personal hobbies or exploring different areas while travelling or introducing nice and strange food or willing to expose their own personal lives to others. I could not understand what is the trend about going live through social media and how people are so excited about it. Read more →

Hannah, I thoroughly enjoyed your Hyperessay and was very impressed with how honest you were describing your thoughts and feelings about live broadcasting via social media. Yes, there is something risky about putting your live broadcast out for the world, or at least your friends to see, but at the same time, all performance is risky and unsettling, which is the nature of performing. I thought this quote of yours was particularly interesting:
I have never thought of it before and how we view performance is no longer going to the actual place but bring it to the viewer.
This is a very astute comment. In traditional performance that takes place in a theater, the audiences comes to the show. But on the Internet, the show comes to the audience. That is a profound difference, as you point out. This would be the same as radio or television, the ability to receive, in your home, or personal space, a live performance or event. On the Internet, performance comes right to your desktop, or even your phone, you can carry it around with you. When you think about it, this is a miraculous idea! I also thought that your incorporation of the imperfections of broadcasting was well thought through, clearly, like any medium, you have to incorporate, rather than fight, the characteristic that are specific to the medium. One comment: when you use a quote such as the one by Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz, which referred to creating "a performance with no geographical boundaries," you should refer to the quote so that it directly supports your argument. This is true of all references whether they be images, video, screenshots or quotations. Excellent work on your Hyperessay.

These 6 weeks have been no short of amusement – from being enlightened with different concepts and intentions of example artworks to getting right into the grind of creating and experience the capabilities of the third space on first-hand.

We’ve been enlightened on how an audience can be performers, how media has turned from one-to-many to many-to-many and most importantly, how Read more →

This was one of the most entertaining Hyperessays I have seen. Val, you have a real flair for writing and situational humor. I am very impressed how you have absorbed everything we have done this semester and assimilated it with great panache into your own work. That is the mark of the artist, to make everything your own, to own the world, and then transform it into your vision of the world. That's very impressive and a highly unusual skill, you should continue to take full advantage of it! You definitely embraced the "in-your-face" quality of the Videofreex, you captured the "media grit" of Jon Cates, which seems to have sparked your creativity to break everything you can, and you have very intelligently drawn from our third space study, including Hole in Space, to gain an interactive relationship to the viewer in your work. My only comment is the ending. You want to try and write a good, solid conclusion that ties everything together. This shouldn't be difficult because you have all the ideas in your head. Perhaps you could have made a conclusive observation in relation to the Google event, that because it was virtual, you could super-participate yourself into the event as part of a collective exchange with others, or something like that. Something that reflects your excellent humor and artistic sensibility.

Very nice! You have a lively imagination and sense of language and I enjoyed the way you found so many techniques and ideas from the artworks we studied to incorporate into your work. I was also impressed how you came to see the value of losing all sense of inhibition, letting yourself go, in the moment, with abandon and freedom. That's what art is all about! This comment was very good:
We become too occupied and serious that we forget to play and explore the possibility.
I sense that you found through your use of media in the third space, an ideal medium for play. Because of the social nature of our work with broadcasting, you seemed to derive enjoyment and positive interaction through your engagement with others. I thought the Safari piece was very inventive and used the technological tools of OBS in an imaginative way. My main comment is to always provide references to your quotes. They are excellent quotes, but we need to know where they came from. I was impressed though with the way you framed the quotes to contextualize how they impacted your work and ideas. Excellent piece.

Before the start of this module, the idea of social broadcasting and Live streaming was really intimidating to me and I would probably never do it unless there is reasons that I must, and this module was the reason. maybe this was the beauty of it, the realness aspect to the Live streaming which made it frightening and interesting.  Wind, your Hyperessay really made me laugh! And in a good way... I take great pride, as you point out, in pushing students out of their comfort zone, but this is the first time a student has animated the process. Bravo!! What a playful and inventive semester you have had so far. I think your Cross-Stream piece in its drunkeness was an ideal concept for your exploration of social broadcasting with the all the various influences woven into it. There were many comments you made about social broadcasting that struck me as quite illuminating, for example:
“Lets create a community and be in this together and we will all enjoy the process” concept. This is where the “Social” in Social Broadcasting” comes in.
I appreciate that you understood the importance of process, which is something that the course emphasizes with works by Jon Cates, Douglas Davis, and many others, in which essentially there is no beginning, middle, or end, just an ongoing exploration and discovery. I also thought this statement was quite revealing:
Social Broadcasting is to communicate and there is no best method for communication. We could simply(arguably) say that, shouting in the public is a form of social broadcasting.
Yes, shouting is in fact a form of social broadcasting, because it is a collective act that is transmitted to the public. So you said it exactly right: social broadcasting is not just about streaming media, it's an approach to narrative, to interactivity, to artistic expression that directly involves the viewers in a participatory experience. There are so many things I could comment on from your Hyperessay, but you really did a great job synthesizing the course and assimilating the many topics we discussed into your work. Excellent.

Our generation, the millennials, has now become so engaged with the use of third space and concept of social broadcasting, that we don’t think twice before using such features. I, for example, am constantly messaging my friends on my phone, telling them what I am currently doing and sending them photos of my activities. I switch between different apps and Read more →

Categories: Hyperessay
Excellent! I am very interested in this observation of yours:
On the phone, I realised I was much more self-conscious, and since I could speak I tried to say hi to the video viewers. However, when I was on the computer and communicating via text I was more careless. I was not showing ONLY a video of myself, but I was creating a display as a desktop.
It made we wonder why you (or anyone) might be less inhibited on the computer than on the phone. Is it because the phone is a more direct conduit to other people on the network? Is it because the phone has a greater since of intimacy since we carry it around with us? I think this statement is very important and I would like to see you investigate the idea more deeply, to better understand the differences between desktop/laptop computing and mobile computing. You also made the following interesting statement:
I think there is a switch of character between when people broadcast themselves in video vs when people broadcast themselves as fonts and desktop layouts – which ties to our final project, the cross streaming."
As we saw in the World's Longest Collaborative Sentence, text can also be a form of social broadcasting. But how does this differentiate from video broadcasting? Are we less inhibited with textual communication than broadcasting our image? I would certainly think so and I think it would be interesting for you to investigate this idea further as well. And with the final statement and quote of Kit and Sherrie, how do you see social broadcasting evolving? How is it different now than it was in the 1980s? Even though the technology has advanced, is the quality of communication and exchange any different? So I am pointing out here that you have opened up many interesting questions to pursue and explore. Perhaps in your final Hyperessay at the end of the semester, you might want to start bringing some closure to these important research questions you have raised.
