Davis was interested in television’s ability to connect people across distance; my students always laugh uncomfortably at the 70s touchy-feeliness of his video work.

With that quote from the article by Michael Connor, it helps put works such as Douglas Davis, The Last Nine Minutes (1977), in perspective of what exactly is going on.

With the intent being to create intimacy, I Read more →

I think you are right, we have become super-participatory in all of our various online interactions, whether it be email, social media, or just the idea of multi-tasking on our desktops while communication with others. I would also think about the importance of collective narrative: how the viewer/readers are able to not only observe, but they can participate, and hence, interact and contribute to the work. This super-participatory form of contribution and interactive relationship to the text is what makes it both collective and collaborative in relation to the author. That was an entirely new concept in 1994. Good research!

The World’s Longest Collaborative Sentence by Douglas Davis

Interactive websites have always been my interest and I would say Douglas Davis’ Collaborative Sentence live website was the most simplest form of interaction between people over the World Wide Web. Nowadays, web designers and developers put so much thought into building a website which has outstanding interactive elements accompanied by beautiful graphics. However, Read more →

Excellent! I was particularly struck by your comment about strangers coming together in a collaborative work of art. Now, that seems like an oxymoron, how can you collaborate with strangers, and those who are distributed all over the world? Douglas Davis' World's Longest Collaborative Sentence demonstrated just how that was possible. My linking strangers together in the act of co-authoring a continuous, non-stop sentence, he brought those people together, linked them through his artistic project. That is the strength of the Web in the hands of artists, like Hole in Space, to bring people together who don't necessarily know each other and invite them to engage in social interaction.

The World’s Longest Collaborative Sentence is a classic internet art was commissioned by Lehman College Art Gallery in 1994 where people around the world can participate or contribute to the never ending sentence. It is an ongoing textual and graphic online performance. It was previously run using HTML and CGI where they had problem configuring the Korean characters, Hangul which Read more →

Excellent! I particularly liked your comment about "ordered chaos." Yes, Collaborative Sentence is exactly like: an extremely simple structure and premise, which through the collective, super-participatory nature of the Web, introduced a fury of collective expression, as Davis' points out, singular, personal utterances that allow each person a voice. Glad to see you are considering an Internet work of your own, I would be very interested to hear more about that!

Digital Conservation of the Davis’s Digital Conversation

After reading the article on restoring Davis’s Collaborative Sentence, I gained a better appreciation of Davis’s work. My thoughts are that technology changes so quickly and frequently (Yes, you Apple and your constant iOS updates), that works can be easily obsolete. Just like how the Mona Lisa in the Louvre needs constant maintenance Read more →

Excellent! I very much liked your distinction between participation (perhaps that mostly pertains to two-way interactivity) and super-participation, which in fact does imply many-to-many interaction that involves the viewers to engage with one another. And since Douglas Davis was part of both the video and net art movements, you are absolutely right that he clearly saw this distinction: video being primarily one-way and two-way, whereas net art many-to-many. And excellent comment about preservation. Considering the archival nature of one's work is very much a part of the artistic process, or at least must be considered. Though there are many artists who don't care when they are young, and are then forced to be concerned when they are older. That is the dilemma!

I think the purpose of this piece is something to consider, you can find the purpose in the title. It's a simple idea: using the Web to create a collective narrative, much like our everyday experience on social media. If you can compare the comments in World's Longest to a page in Facebook, it will look very similar. So the expectation of what the purpose of this work is that it established the idea of social media and the way in which people randomly and spontaneously communicate with each other in playful ways. Hope that helps!

“The World’s Longest Collaborative Sentence” by Douglas Davis is a project he began in 1994 at the art gallery at Lehman College, where he invited people to contribute in the forms of words, photographs, video, graphics, WWW links, and sound via the Internet, the World Wide Web, email, regular mail, and personal visit.

Very good comment about how on the one hand, the sentence is made up of individual, disconnected fragments of statements, but on the other hand, the run-on nature of the piece invites connection between viewers, even if not intended. This I think is the interesting dynamic of Internet art, it enables subjectivity and collectivity all at the same time. Important suggestions: be sure that you reference your quote with the person who made the original statement. Also, remember to use additional images and links to support your essay. Finally, the assignment asks that each student consider the reading as context for your essay, in this case, about the preservation of the work.

For our pre-class trial run, Me and Su Hwee teamed up for this Safari Themed Cross-stream idea!
