I have always felt nervous when facing the public online. However, I felt more comfortable this time round as I have all the prior experience that I could fall back to. After researching Jon Cates’ work, Bold3RRR, I had a basic idea of the content that I wanted to broadcast, a simple video about how I entertain myself Read more →

I’ve always had a negative interpretation of glitches. To me this indicated that something was faulty. It never occurred to me how glitches can be artistic or appreciated artistically until i came to ADM and got exposed to the different work of art by artists around the world. Bold3RRR presented an opportunity for me to appreciate glitches even more. Read more →

Glad to see you had a new realization regarding glitches! I would have liked to have sees you clarify what you mean by context, you say the work provides some kind of context but I am not sure what you are referring to. Also, whereas they are multiple windows, it's not really a multicam, there is just one Webcam, unless you consider the view of the desktop a kind of "virtual camera." Finally, when you speak of the mise-en-scene, you say he present this idea very well, but what exactly is the idea? It would be good to explain. Let me know if you would like to discuss the work further.

As someone who is usually uncomfortable in front of the camera, I found the filters on the OBS software ‘liberating’ as I was less self-conscious. In this live broadcast, I was having lunch and was not doing much on my desktop. There has been a social media trend where social media is used to broadcast people eating. People eat large Read more →

Interesting comments and I can understand your awkwardness in streaming from the desktop. It affects us all that way. Be sure to use the correct class category (research) so that it goes on to the class site timeline.

I constantly find myself being very nervous about Going Live; and yet after I’m done I still want to do it again. I think it’s an innate social drive to share things we’re excited about.

From the get-go, I was pretty certain that I wanted to be streaming music, but I hadn’t decided on any specifics. Looking back, I’m not sure Read more →

I waited until the last minute to complete this assignment, because I had no idea what to do when streaming my personal cyber space, my desktop. I thought about what I could do on the computer beforehand – luckily, my desktop folders are usually organized so I didn’t have to clean it up. During this process, I was slightly surprised Read more →

Research Critique: Bold3RRR by Jon Cates

Jon Cates’ use of glitch art and his pursuit of “dirty media” in Bold3RRR can be seen as a reflection of society’. Glitch is a result of a computer graphic error and sometimes a notice that the computer has a problem, reminding users to fix the problem or resolve the glitch. It is often a frustrating experience for users to Read more →

Very good commentary on Jon Cates and the way in which he views glitch as a humanizing element and imperfection in our often overly imperfect approach to digital media. I felt you could have been more specific about the nature of BOLD3RRR, what took place during the piece besides just the general reference to glitch. How was he using his desktop to convey process, for example? How was he opening up his artistic space to the viewer? These are all things we are thinking about in relation to our own projects. Also, be sure, again to use the class category (research), otherwise your work doesn't go to the class site and I won't know you have posted. Please change your last two posts that have this issue. Also, you really want to make more complete use of OSS by incorporating links, additional images, and even video references. OSS is a multimedia medium and you want to make maximum use of it, especially when we are studying the Internet.
I am rereading and wondering if perhaps you might take a deeper look at this piece, to understand that in fact there is a narrative and how it relates to our study of desktop performance.

BOLD3RRR by Jon Cates

Glitch Art may look like a software malfunction by people who do not understand the aesthetics of it. The artist makes a work of art by almost doing nothing. However, there are more to that. Although it looks as if creating glitch art is something instantaneous, the artist still has to explore, discover and plan the piece out. Read more →

Excellent! And you are right... what is truly remarkable about BOLD3RRR as a glitch work is that it was created in real-time... and furthermore, that the artist is describing the process of making the work at the same time. That was a nice example comparing Jon Cates' glitch to Pokeman, to see how the glitch aesthetic has worked its way into the mainstream gaming world.
I liked the part where you mentioned "Some elements were dominating the other and some were very subtle you can barely notice it." I personally feel that it gives the artwork a sense of rhythm. It started out quite straightforward, and sort of eased the viewer into the more complex layered portions of the piece. I also like the part about Pokemon creating a community around the glitch! It reminded me of video game speed runners who often use and hunt for glitches within the game to create an impossibly fast play-through of a game. Keep up the good work!

I feel that through a desktop it tells the stories and narratives of our personal everyday lives as we interact with our desktop. Not only that the different sounds that we play on it could be an orchestra performing together to create a musical/ sound which tells the story of our personality. I think the reason we reveal what we are Read more →

BOLD3RRR rings up a whole bunch of thoughts; not all of which are concrete. I think akin to impressionist paintings, (as pretentious as that might sound, especially in an opening sentence) the art piece gives an atmosphere or a sense of the moment. Funnily enough, I’d say this links up to what mise en scène does; through the visual information Read more →

Hello Makoto! I agree with what you said about how we gain understanding through subconscious manner. While watching the video my mind was wondering around catching the things that I can relate personally. Like you mention you ponder about what was shown to us and unsure about it. I had a similar experience as you questioning about what I am watching. However after the question by question it bring me to just let nature to take its course lol. My thoughts are jumping around here and there picking what make sense to me which I feel it kinda evoke some kind of imagination in me. ps: your english really good man! I really like the way you phrase them!
Brilliant Makoto! In fact, you perfectly understand the intent of the appropriated work by Rosa Menkman that Jon Cates inserted into his performance, which is exactly as you said, a look at the nostalgia of old technology, in this case the European PAL standard. You also touched on what I think is important about this work, it's unfiltered nature. That is what glitch is all about, not striving to achieving some kind of perfection of media rendering, but rather, enjoying and relishing the imperfections, the errors, the mistakes, and the aberrations.
