Wherever we go, something would crash!

On the 28th of October 28th at 11pm, we had the chance to finally meet the creators of “Grand Theft Avatar,” the Second Front. The interview was a rather refreshing and interesting one.  The members were all rather laid-back and I could tell that they were passionate in what they were doing as they did their Read more →

I agree that the idea of "virtual leakage" relates to the idea of how our sense of reality is transformed by moving back and forth between the real and the virtual. As you point out, that seems to be the foundation of Second Front's work, an exploration they seem to enjoy immensely. Excellent piece, though I would have like to have seen some visual elements incorporated into your essay.

In the Second Front interview, many interesting question has been raise and discussed. There were also small amusing moment where Prof Randall suddenly disconnected due to the programme has crash, Second Front said that

Wherever we go, something would crash!

They said that in a funny way which I feel they are used to the crashing experiences working with the programmes. They Read more →

Excellent piece and you discussed many of the important points of their interview. Yes, Bibbe Hansen seems to relish how Second Life brings out the child and how she fulfilled her dream to grow up as a cartoon. That is so wonderful it really does make you laugh. And excellent point about the loss of the body in the performance and what this might lead to. I see many computer games moving in this direction, although in our social broadcasting work, we are still concerned with the body and how it interacts with other bodies in different locations. So there are in fact many directions that can be taken in the third space.

Research Critique - Interview with Second Front

The interview with Second Front was a refreshing experience as we got to be in the virtual space with Second Front! They were all rather laid-back, cool and excited (especially Bibbe), and shared their personal experiences and thoughts about Second Life and their work. They talked about the difference between the virtual and reality, the reason behind their choice of Read more →

Excellent piece. I liked your comments on identity. I think that performing in a space like Second Front gives one (anyone) an opportunity to explore identity in ways that far extend beyond our social media personae simply because we have the opportunity to role play. As you point out, Second Front has really embraced this idea and used it to create many interesting performance works.

Second Front LIVE on ADOBE CONNECT

@ Grandma Joe

Seeing the humans behind any work always comes with an air about the whole scenario, ‘These are the people behind what I’ve been seeing’.

Despite being new to their work, seeing the people behind Second Front was no different.

And it’s made even more tantalizing by the fact that there’s the opportunity that I’ll be able to hear from the artists themselves, Read more →

You point a very interesting generational gap between your millennial generation (digital natives) and older generations who did not grow up with this degree of connectivity. I suppose when it is been around all of your life, that you don't look at it as some kind of transformational capability to be connected to anyone, anywhere. Is it that it's just another mode to talk to people? And excellent points about the story of the IP address, indicating that even though Second Life isn't real, it has real world ramifications.

Networked Conversations With Second Front Review.

This was a eyeopening Network Conversation with five of Second Front’s member – Bibbe HansenLiz Solo, Doug JarvisPatrick Lichty and Jeremy Owen Turner  This Conversation was HIGHLY advertised on Facebook by Prof Randall, and I found it really funny that the artists(Patrick Lichty) commented that they sensed danger in it and Liz Solo Read more →

Your post made me think about so many things! But most of all I am intrigued that you would look at the third space as a new frontier, with new possibilities and potential. For me, the third space has been around for a long time, really, even the telephone is the third space, which goes back to the 19th century. But you are right, as we keep evolving and spending more time in the third space, connected as we are, it seems as though this environment is ever-expanding in terms of what is possible. It almost seems like everything is possible!

[Internet Art & Culture] Research Critique - Interview with the Second Front

@ Putri Dina

Make way for the Second Front! To be able to be in the same space (Third Space, in this case) with the famous Second Front was quite intimidating. Some had their shades on, looking very charismatic and some had friendly smiles, typing witty comments in the chat.

Excellent research piece and you captured so many important elements. Yes, in fact there were earlier examples of text-based virtual realities called MUDs or MOOs. One of them is still active called LambdaMOO. There is another world called The Palace, which has simpler graphics from the 1990s, which was also very popular. So Second Life is part of an ongoing evolution of virtual reality environments that allow real-time, networked interaction in the third space. Your critique is well researched and very detailed.

The interview with the Second Front members were exciting and inspirational. They have set me thinking about performance art and their approach or opinions on it. It is so fascinating to see them getting so excited when they crash the internet. Usually when the internet crashes, people start to panic and try to fix the problem asap. Through their reaction, Read more →

Excellent piece. You pointed out the way in which they reacted to the crash at the beginning. In fact I think the entire NTU network went out because not only did I get knocked but many of the students. Anyway, it makes you realize how adaptable you need to be in order to perform in a virtual world such as Second Life. That is why they took the crash in stride, and why they view Second Life performance as such a place of the imagination, where anything is possible.

Second Front live interview review

The Second Front interview was a refreshing and interesting live broadcast. I was actually looking forward to the live interview and log in to adobe connect early to catch a glimpse of the content of the video. I was at that point formulating a question that I could ask the Second Front crew later on in the interview.

The interview started. It Read more →

Yes, there is always a degree of risk and error with these events, as you point out. I hope you were able to log back in again after the crash. Apparently the NTU network went down briefly, which explains why several students lost the connection as well. I am curious about the question you were going to ask? You could post here in this essay. Yes, there certainly was interaction between the participants, I am curious how you equate that to virtual leakage, since we were all together in the third space. And yes, as you point out, Second Front was quite fashionable, most likely since they feel the need to compete with their even more fashionable avatars!

Win Zaw, Anam, Isaac and I conducted the rehearsal for the final project on Monday.

We set up one red screen in front of a table, and captured the scene on OBS. Then on OBS, we chroma-keyed the red color out, and dragged in two live feeds from Win Zaw and Anam. On Win Zaw’s live feed, he was wearing a Read more →

Critique on Second Front’s interview

I found the overall experience of the interview fascinating as I am able to see the people behind the characters from Second Front. I enjoyed the interview as the interviewee of the panels were in different places of the world. It was like looking at a representative of each country getting interviewed by Randall. As we know that Second Read more →

I think someone asked them whether or not they considered performing in other platforms, and in fact I recall that they have, though Second Life is clearly their platform of choice. Yes, they definitely gravitate to the fee and spontaneous Happening mode, most likely since Bibbe's father Al Hansen was a member of the Fluxus group and they were very closely aligned with spontaneous, though often scripted Happenings. Second Front on the other hand, as you point out, were working in a fairly unscripted format, but they definitely had a clear narrative structure with each piece.
