Co-broadcasting reflections:
One of the technical difficulties that we face while we were broadcasting was the lagginess of our stream. We kept on disconnecting with each other and the constant need to stay connected to the internet had therefore limiting Read more →
Research Critique on A LEAP INTO THE VOID: INTERVIEW WITH SECOND FRONT, by Domenico Quaranta
After reading the interview for SECONDFRONT, I totally agree with MAN MICHINAGA view’s on the performance he did with the group. He mentioned that Second Front gave him the opportunity to perform tasks that cannot be done in the physical world. I could relate to that as it is quite often many people escapes to this third ‘room’ located in their computer to Read more →
Research Critique: Second Front
The Second Front performance was extraordinary and unlike anything that we’ve experience in internet art and culture, the performance is entirely within a virtual world(third space) where what was common in the Second Life was totally impossible in the real world that we live in(like physics and such).
To be really frank, I started the research about Second Front by reading Read more →
Research Critique: Second Front
The Second Front is a group of artists performing in the public virtual space that is the world of Second Life. The interview with the Second Front crew revealed their preferences in terms of their video broadcasting location, their methodology in creating their pieces and how they viewed their video.
The performance by Second Front was often shown in the public and Read more →
The ability to interact with the audiences and the audiences were able to interact back. An example of such concepts existing before the Second Front was the VideoFreex and the way they broadcast their content as well.First, you make an important connection between the idea of "virtual leakage" and the way we communication and interact across the third space. Secondly, equating this idea to the Videofreex was a brilliant connection. They too were able to achieve two-way communication between the viewer and the broadcaster via television, transforming the medium into an early form of the third space. Great! The only thing missing in your critique referencing the idea of "leakage" to the essay. It would have been perfect to have used a quote to support your statement. Great work!
Research Critique: Second Front
Second Front, founded by a seven member group in 2006, is the first performance art group in the virtual world of Second Life. The members are Gazira Babeli (Italy), Yael Gilks (London), Bibbe Hansen (New York), Doug Jarvis (Victoria), Scott Kildall (San Francisco), Patrick Lichty (Chicago) and Liz Solo (St. Johns).
They are influenced by Dada, Fluxus, Futurist Syntesi, contemporary performance artists Read more →
Grand Theft Avatar challenges the role of traditional game structure. Also they questioned game strategies, the authenticity of currency, rules and lifestyle to Second Life. The question I would ask is how does the work of Second Front challenge game structure, as well as the kind of narratives we generally see. I agree that their work points to many ways to actually undermine the virtual space, deconstruct, analyze it, and alter it that could have tremendous impact on how games are designed and experienced. So I would be interested in how you might elaborate on this point, because it is so important. Excellent essay that raises many important issues.
Research critique: Jennicam
Prior to Jennicam, there were two other “live camera” web series (Trojan Room Coffee Camera and a fish camera) which were inspirations that Jenny borrowed from. The coffee camera allowed people in University of Cambridge (old computer laboratory) to know if there were still coffee in the dispenser so they don’t have to climb up 7 storeys for nothing. (superbly Read more →

Jennifer Ringley, a regular American girl studying at a university in Pennsylvania, started a live feed of her college dorm room when she was 19. The webcam set up in her room would send an updated image every 3 minutes onto the web. It attracted millions of visitors, as back in 1996 Internet was still new, and this kind of Read more →
Co-Broadcasting Experience
https://www.facebook.com/wrongval/videos/10155226510788208/
Basically this is a new function in Facebook Live where broadcasters could invite up to one view to join his/her broadcast, resulting in a split screen broadcast.
I think first of all it really helped with communication between me and Val and we could also see/hear what each other were doing. I think it also reduces the awkwardness a little since Read more →
Co-Broadcasting Exercise
“Screen capture from our Facebook Live Co-broadcast exercise”
The co-broadcasting experience has truly opened my eyes to new possibilities in the way I approach online broadcasting. It had similar attributes to the online stream we have done in OBS several weeks ago with being able to have somebody else’s video feed sharing the same space as ours on our Read more →

Third Space Dating
So for this test we tried out third space dating. We connected via mobile and I streamed a powerpoint on my desktop with question that we needed to answer. I feel that this allowed for better interactivity and for us to understand each other.
However, there was an issue with co-broadcasting like what you see in the video below. Read more →
