Project 1 Brief

How do you evoke a particular emotion when making music or creating a piece of art? In particular, can the drawing of lines express a variety of moods and emotions? This project suggests infinite possibilities of experimenting with various drawing and mark making techniques to express a series of emotions, and eventually create abstract line works. The brief requires you to interpret a total of 6 emotions using lines on a given template (see "PDF"). The series of line work should be varied and each express the emotions (or its secondary/tertiary derivative emotion) based on the 6 basic emotion categories, i.e. anger, love, joy, fear, sadness and surprise. Each line should measure 380mm (length) by 72mm (width) and the 6 lines are to be pasted neatly and orderly over 2 separate A3 sheets of paper in the landscape orientation.

Project 2 Brief

My mama always said, “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Movie: Forrest Gump, 1994.  In this project, you are tasked to pick four movie quotes either from one movie or various movies that you have watched over the years. Your challenge is to create a visual narrative that expresses each quote using only symbols, pictograms, dingbats (ornaments), icons and engravings as your visual vocabulary. The old engraving imagery puts the composition into historical context. You are to manipulate, alter and deconstruct the found graphic imagery to transcend its original meaning through the creation of the indicated narratives. Pay particular attention to the application of design principles to create visually engaging compositions.

Project 3 Brief

Every person reacts differently in different settings and when they are with different groups of people - although fundamentally they are the same person. In four rows of three squares, create a self portrait based on four different settings. For each of the four rows, use the first column to represent yourself and the second column to represent a setting and the third column to represent an imagined outcome. For example, you (first column) at a family gathering (second column) equals to being the subject of scrutiny by relatives (third column). As a designer, it is important to understand the importance of colours in design. In particular, an understanding of colour harmonies allow designers to visually manipulate the aesthetics to produce the desired outcome. Apply your understanding of colours ...
