Project 2 Brief

Project Brief

My mama always said, “Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you’re gonna get.” Movie: Forrest Gump, 1994.

In this project, you are tasked to pick four movie quotes either from one movie or various movies that you have watched over the years.

Your challenge is to create a visual narrative that expresses each quote using only symbols, pictograms, dingbats (ornaments), icons and engravings as your visual vocabulary.

The old engraving imagery puts the composition into historical context. You are to manipulate, alter and deconstruct the found graphic imagery to transcend its original meaning through the creation of the indicated narratives.

Pay particular attention to the application of design principles to create visually engaging compositions.

Aim

The aim is to move beyond cliché solutions and habitual reaction to problem solving that leads to predictable results.

It is in the limitation of the given visual vocabulary that would challenge beyond literal problem solving and embrace the graphic palette where one get to play and re-invent familiar imagery.

Suggestions

Given the popularity of certain movie quotes, one may have a preconceived visual association about the quote. “I am your father”, a popular quote from Star Wars, for example, may trigger a specific visual in his mind based on the iconic scene in the movie.

In order to reinterpret such preconceived associations, think laterally and use narrative techniques such as hyperbole (exaggeration), metaphor, caricature, parody, anthropomorphism, etc., to create new interpretations that are fun and visually engaging. Start by sketching your ideas in your journal.

Specification

This project will start digitally and end manually. Photoshop will be used to convert all found images into black and white half-tone images (strictly no colour and no grey scale). Print each 250mm x 190mm composition together with 20mm space for the movie quote (Ariel, 18pt-24pt) on normal A4 papers. Print a total of 4 pieces. Please note that all sourced imaged have to be in high resolution with at least 300 dpi B/W in A4 size.

Next, select the best composition out of the four. Using a screen printing method called silkscreen, print the image (excluding movie quote) onto a plain tote bag using black silkscreen ink.

Deliverables

  1. Digital print – Four A4 size pieces of B&W prints on normal paper (250mm x 190mm) with 20mm for movie quote
  2. Silkscreen print – One printed tote bag in B&W
  3. Creative Process journal – research, sketches, development of ideas, outcomes and reflections
