Read and Respond: Ch 4 Jan Chipchase, You are what you carry. chipchase_ch4

Technology is scary. It is scaring me daily how reliant and how ‘smart’ it has become due to mankind’s reliability on it to do virtually everything for us. This constant growth in technology and the amount of things we ask it to do simply because we are ‘lazy’ makes Read more →

You Are What You Carry

In chapter 4 of Hidden in Plain Sight, Jan Chipchase wrote interesting insights about our carrying behaviour. The objects we often carry are based on multiple aspects like the range of distribution, the center of gravity and point of reflection. However, it ultimately boils down to survivability. Most of us happen to at least carry three Read more →

Jan Chipchase’s chapter You are what you carry is a follow-up of his speech 10 years ago.  Since his book Hidden in plane sights was published 6 years later in 2013, he mentioned more detailed approaches how people carry their belongings in the future. During his research over decades he found out, that there is a global commonality of how people live and what Read more →

In Chapter 4 of Jan Chipchase’s “Hidden in Plain Sight,” Chipchase discusses our habits and tendencies that we’ve developed in relationship to our every day products and how these concepts change as we transition into the digital realm. Chipchase defines two key concepts: the center of gravity, which are the places “where portable objects tend to cluster”, and the Read more →

@ UMMI

In the previous chapter, Chipchase did a research on the 3 important items in one’s bag — key, money, and mobile phone. In this chapter, Chipchase then move towards the research and study of “carrying behaviour”.

I’d agree to some of the behavioural study he shared in this chapter:

@ Ping's

As mentioned as well during his Ted talk, Jan Chipchase touched upon the three essential items we cannot leave home without — phone, keys, and money — in chapter 4 of Hidden in Plain Sight. In fact, these three items are universal simply because they concern our survival, as well as the fact that they fulfil our primal needs.

@ Kaixin

It is interesting to see Chipchase’s research on people’s carrying behaviours carried out in different countries.

What we carry is very much dictated by the environment we are in. Within NTU, when I’m in the ADM building, I would leave my bag, wallet and even phone everywhere and leave to do other stuff, because I know the place inside Read more →

The issues addressed in this chapter were the most relatable to me. Money transfers to one’s bank account are silent affairs, requiring one to login and notice the outstanding amount change a few digits. And if not for One Time Passwords verifying your purchase, one wouldn’t realize that the money has already been wired to a vendor’s account. Money today Read more →

@ Yaaayu's

Last week Jan Chipchase had given us an idea of a relationship between the top 3 items people carried out against the significance of it. This week, Chapter 4 of Jan Chipchase book had given me another insight into behaviors of people according to how they deal with their belongings.

It is common to see people front-packing in certain countries but Read more →

@ Pearlyn Seah

Advancement in technology has certainly improved life and change our necessary survival skills. People once relied heavily on physical copies of maps, cash, printed information, etc. Today, everything is simply a touch away, on one’s phone. Travelling no longer requires stacks of maps, airplane confirmation, and addresses. With just a single click, we can easily access the information we require. Read more →
