In this chapter, Löwgren introduced us to digital artefacts based on technical systems and how they influence our lives at not only individual but as well as social levels.  I feel that Löwgren pointed out something that is very worth keeping in mind of, and that is how even though the outcome of a professional design is the result of Read more →

Design is the craft of visualising concrete solutions that serve human needs and goals within certain constraints.

– Kim Goodwin

The common misconception surrounding designers is that we exist simply to make things look aesthetically pleasing. We do not come equipped with the knowledge of engineers. Our instruments? Mostly our ability to visualise and conceptualise. Indeed, whenever my relatives ask Read more →

“Design is the craft of visualising concrete solutions that serve human needs and goals within certain constraints.” by Kim Goodwin, the author of the book, explained that design is a discipline that is neither art nor science. Design is something that serves human needs and goals. These human needs and goals include aesthetic satisfaction but more than that. Designers Read more →

Responding to the reading, find 2 examples of a product/project that you think are good examples of thoughtfully designed user experience. Be prepared to support your choices.

Core concept:  interaction design, design process, design situation and digital artifact.

The first example would be the emergence of The Web App. I believe most of us are familiar with the term App , or Application, Read more →

In this reading of “Designing for the Digital Age – Goal-oriented Product and service Design” by Kim Goodwin, it gives a clearer view on basically how to design.

Goodwin gave an accurate definition for the word – Design – is the craft of visualizing concrete solutions that serve human needs and goals within certain constraints.

Serving human needs and goals will confuse Read more →

This reading was quite insightful for me. As time passes and technology develops, we can all agree that we will continue to develop products that uses technology for a very long time. In this chapter, Lowgren discusses what good and bad design is, and what designers should go through to develop a good thinking process and design.

In a way, this Read more →

In this reading the author define the definition of design was to serve human needs and goals. I really like what he had mention:

design is the craft of visualizing concrete solutions that serve human needs and goals within certain constraints.

While designer is not about expressing their point of view but understanding the problem and giving a concrete solution that meet Read more →

The reading talked about how designers are restricted by the qualities of the materials, whether in form of physical or digital forms. It is good to have detailed knowledge about the material so that designers can work well with them. Working with a combination of two materials can be a great challenge especially. However, designers should also open their minds Read more →

Interesting that you describe the lack of connectivity as a "disability" in today's hyper-connected world.  What would happen then, if networks go down in the event of a natural disaster or other unforeseen emergency?
From a networking perspective, most systems would have back up plans, ensuring that the downtime of a network or server would be minimal. Think of not being able to Google something out for 3 hours would affect people who rely on Google for work.   However, if it is a prolonged event, then we will have to adapt to other means of connectivity. The concept of going back to the offline way of living may be distant to the millennials, possibly those who have never known to live without the internet. In light of the hyperconnectivity, I personally foresee a possible future where disconnection is pursued.

The presentation in class by the guest lecturer was indeed insightful. In particular, his suggestion to allow two participants interact with one another to create art allowed another dimension in my thoughts for the iLight proposal.

I met with the leader of the IEM team to convey our discussions in class, so that the IEM side can understand certain aspects of Read more →
