UX: Chipchase "You Are What You Carry"

Elizabeth

@ Elizabeth Klare

Jan Chipchase’s “You Are What You Carry” chapter was a relatable followup read to his TedTalk on the anthropology of mobile phones. He elaborates on the four factors of security, convenience, reliable solutions and peace of mind that drive our carrying behaviors. These factors are inherently connected so that lack of one directly degrades another; for instance, if I feel Read more →

Personal Favourite from Past Ilight Installations

@ Yaaayu's

Sustainability to me can be applicable to many different topics, culture, environment or even economy. I actually feel that there are a greater concern over sustainable environment especially with all the “global warming alert” and “rising sea level” claims bombarding the people in recent decade.

Many of the environment-related campaigns spreads the idea of each of us playing our part but Read more →

[Response] Hidden in Plain Sight Chapter 4

Ping

Sunday, Sep 10, 2017 - 12:43:15 am

@ Ping's

As mentioned as well during his Ted talk, Jan Chipchase touched upon the three essential items we cannot leave home without — phone, keys, and money — in chapter 4 of Hidden in Plain Sight. In fact, these three items are universal simply because they concern our survival, as well as the fact that they fulfil our primal needs.

My 2 favorite iLight installations

@ Trove

The installation I remembered most was Groove Light by a group of NUS students. It was geometric sculpture that changes the shadows made when you move the lightbulb up and down. The theme that year was “In Praise of Shadows”, so it was quite an apt installation. It would’ve been nice if it was bigger such that the shadow became Read more →

I did not have the chance to attend the iLight Festival 2017, so I found some pictures online. But the pictures do not do them justice because I couldn’t see them in action. The year’s topic is nature, the artworks I prefer usually shows a big contrast with the urban landscapes.

Picture 1 and 2 show the artwork Read more →

Response: Past years' iLight Installation

@ Jayden

My favourite piece of installation from past years’ iLight installation would be (ULTRA) LIGHT NETWORK (featured image) by Felix Raspall, Carlos Bañón, Manuel Garrido and Mohan Elara (Singapore).

This piece of installation made use of geometrical arrangements, incorporating lights within. With more people nearing the installation, it would produce different patterns of light strobes, as well as increased light intensity.

Chipchase - You are what you carry

Kaixin

Saturday, Sep 09, 2017 - 11:29:46 pm

@ Kaixin

It is interesting to see Chipchase’s research on people’s carrying behaviours carried out in different countries.

What we carry is very much dictated by the environment we are in. Within NTU, when I’m in the ADM building, I would leave my bag, wallet and even phone everywhere and leave to do other stuff, because I know the place inside Read more →

Response to You Are What You Carry

@ Trove

The issues addressed in this chapter were the most relatable to me. Money transfers to one’s bank account are silent affairs, requiring one to login and notice the outstanding amount change a few digits. And if not for One Time Passwords verifying your purchase, one wouldn’t realize that the money has already been wired to a vendor’s account. Money today Read more →

Week 4 Response: You Are What You Carry

@ Jayden

After reading this chapter and also having to watch his TED talk earlier on in class, I can better understand his point on how technology has benefited us. He has used the three most important things to elaborate several new terminologies which I found was very interesting: Range Of Distribution. This is a very good way to observe a certain Read more →
