Final Research Hyperessay

The Final Research Hyperessay, to be approximately 1500 words, is due on the last day of class. As an expansion of the Research Critique, the Final Research Hyperessay will take full advantage of the media authoring techniques of OSS and the Web, including relevant images, hyperlinks, quotes, etc.

Each student will give a 10 minute presentation of their research, using OSS as the presentation medium, followed by 5 minutes of Q & A. See the Final Research Hyperessay Description for additional details.

Outline

Student Feedback

We will take the first 15 minutes of class for everyone to complete the student feedback forms. We will review the course objectives, assignments, topics, integration of OSS, independent research, instructor feedback, guest speakers (Chip Lord and Paul Sermon), and the Symposium as an opportunity to engage with an academic conference event.

Symposium Hyperessay

The remaining students who did not present last week will present for 10 minutes from their Symposium Hyperessay.

Final Research Hyperessay: Key Work(s)

Each student will report on their research and discuss the key work(s) they have selected, describing the work and stating its significance to our study of new media history and theory.

Review of Course Concepts

We will review the primary course concepts: integration, interaction, hypermedia, immersion, and telematics, discussing how they can be applied to our analyses in the Final Research Hyperessays. It is one of the main objectives of the course for students to have a solid understand of these concepts, their historical significance contextualized by readings, and their ties to artists and engineers we have discussed. Furthermore, how do these concepts combine to form conceptual tools for dissecting and analyzing historical and contemporary new media art? We will review each week in the context of each student’s current research.
