Project Social Life. Project Social Life is an interactive online social performance. In this experiment, we test the power of social media in our lives and the effects of losing control over our lives. Our project revolved around Instagram. Instagram was our source, our outlet, and our dictator. To test this, we created a separate Instagram account and constantly Read more →

Very astute commentary on the seduction of our interactions in the third space and the loss of control. I thought your project was very effective as a means of gauging that loss of control by asking the viewers to curate and dictate your actions for one day. So from a theoretical standpoint your critique was quite good. However, it would strengthen the critique to give more specific examples of the actions you were told to carry out, and to provide more media and screenshots to illustrate the viewer responses, otherwise we don't know exactly what they dictated. I can see that you had a very positive learning experience about our collective actions in the third space... though I wouldn't say it is the third space that dictates our actions but our lack of awareness of our own third space actions which we often carry about without critical thought. I feel you know have a strong critical ability to observe and be more aware of your third space interactions and how you might be giving up control to others around you. Now it's time to take that control back as an artist!

@ Jasmine

A Third Space Fallacy is an experimental interaction performance on third and first space that combines the responses collated on the third space through Instagram polls and stories to curate the next move in a friendship conflict between two girls (Bella and Daphne). To make the entire performance as real as possible, both girls had to put up an act Read more →

Very good Daphne: the idea of a community of artists. And to activate this idea, you as the artist or "social designer" need to create that community, and I thought your ability to inspire viewers to draw was very well done. I thought your detailed description of the work was quite good, however, I would have liked to have seen more specific references to the drawings themselves, rather than providing one large grid. But I can see that the viewers were very creative in their depictions. Although you mentioned Blast Theory and a few other works from the course, you need to explain how these projects were influential in more detail, otherwise the reader, who may not necessarily know these work, may have no idea of how they are similar. You can't assume that we know what you are implying, it needs to be stated as part of the analysis of the work. I really liked the project though and as I mentioned, it was very successful in creating an experimental interaction with your viewers. I am sending a separate email with my feedback on the video.

With Cecelia, Jocelyn, Nadiah and Shu, Project Social Life (name as suggested by Shu’s mother) was carried out on 14 April.

The overarching idea is of surrendering control of yourself to others. I’ll link to Shu, who, in my opinion, effectively wrote the most concise description possible.

This is an excellent essay, funny, and quite erudite. You have a wicked sense of humor that is most illuminating. I really liked your honest critique of the piece, how you were controlled and not controlled, how you succumbed to control and avoided it as well. How you carried out assigned actions, and made up many of your own. I feel like you as an artist in the group took a step back and provided a clear assessment of its intent, execution and outcome. This is highly perceptive and shows you are not just repeating information but you are thinking. Really thinking. Excellent. A few comments: I would have like to have seen some additional media and screenshots to illustrate your observations, as well as some references to the artists, topics, readings, etc., from the class. But aside from that I really enjoyed your essay and your cunning ability to deconstruct and evaluate the whole process. You have a very strong, independent mind and artistic sensibility. Keep up the good work.

Curating Them is an interactive performance piece that explores the control of social media over a person’s real life decisions and our willingness to let it happen and shape our digital identity. This will play out over Instagram Story, using the poll function as our voting system. There will be two parties posting pre-determined questions at the same time. However, Read more →

3 years ago, I mused that, someday, A Level History would cover the rise of the Internet as a full-fledged topic. It's an important historical event, after all. There'd be so many possible subtopics, and all the Gen Z kids would love it. Still waiting though.

Social Broadcasting: An Unfinished Communications Revolution. This is the theme of the symposium, and a phrase saturated with meaning. As quoted by Packer,

Gene Youngblood signals the need for “a communications revolution… an alternative social world” that decentralises the experience of the live broadcast through the creative work of collaborative communities’. (link)

And yet, this complete upheaval of the way we communicate Read more →

Excellent En Cui! I am very impressed that you attended and discussed the entire Symposium, when only two days were assigned. I want to address your statement about the unfinished revolution. As you point out, there is always more, more potential, more stretching of boundaries, more breaking down of hierarchies and barriers, and more ways to enhance our use of communications technologies for artistic expression. It is interesting that you pointed out the vibrancy of the chat. I completely agree, in many ways, the chat was a parallel work, activated by the audience. And perhaps best demonstrated the possibilities of social broadcasting in terms of inclusivity and communications exchange. Your writing was excellent and your attention to detail throughout the Symposium was exemplary. Excellent work!

The open source is an outlet that goes against propriety models as discussed in Vaidhyanathan’s essay. Open source has always been the norm before propriety models came into the picture. Society began to get accustomed towards propriety models which overshadows open source. When copyright was introduced into propriety software, it stopped users from exploiting or copying information online. With such, Read more →

Very good presentation of both sides of the issue. You captured very well the pros and cons of open source, and how it can be used creatively by artists. Besides the featured image, be sure and make your posts more visual, using images to help communicate ideas. And when you use references, be sure to quote with blockquotes. We will go over that in class this evening. Good work!
