Excellent piece and very well researched. Don't forget to make use of the essay to help support your arguments. One of the things I was most impressed with in your essay is the shift between artist and audience: how the audience becomes the artist and the artist becomes the audience. This is very true. I would like to add an additional role of the artist, and that is the role of the "interaction design." The artists in this case design a system of communication for audience interaction and enabled the members of the audience to communicate across the distance, and essentially compose their own experience. THAT, in essence, was a very new idea in 1980. Excellent work.

You raise some very interesting and compelling points about the "reality" of what we see online. You are right, this distortion of truth and authenticity is a significant aspect of the networked experience. So the question to think about is how to this loss of the real impact intimacy and social relations online? This is what Annie Abrahams is asking. Also, an important element of the third space is the idea of the collapse of distance, which I discuss in my essay. So think about how the third space bring people together from difference locations into a third, networked space.

Very good description of how the third space activates and enables artworks such as Grand Theft Avatar to go beyond the real in telling a story and providing a space for actors to realize the impossible, such as flying and riding a missile. And like I have just done, I would also include specific examples from the artwork to illustrate your excellent points. In other words, talk about the story, what happened, the theft of the Linden bank, as best you can, rather than only speaking in general terms. In other words, try to be more concrete, even when it is virtual!

Excellent research and your examples are very interesting! Yes, you right, in the third space, just about anything can happen when you are not bound to the constraints of reality, gravity, location, and character. You can be anyone, you can go anywhere, you can fly, you can build your own world. That is certainly the allure of the third space, and we can see how Second Front has used the third space as a virtual theater for staging situations that would be impossible in the physical world.

I would like to see more of a description about how this piece uses the third space, and what exactly the third space means as defined in my essay. So you want to balance the detail you have provided within the conceptual framework of the week's topic, which in this case is the third space. Excellent! I would like to hear more about the connection between Cartesian Dualism and our virtual bodies co-mingling in the third space. Your exposé very nicely investigates the question of intimacy, despite geographical separation and proximity. This is the very essence of the third space, as you point out, how we are able to inhabit together networked space, while still feeling a strong sense of touch and closeness. Why is this? This is the big question we ask in our study of networked culture.

Great piece, and I am so delighted that you mentioned the idea of "emotional bandwidth," a term that was coined by Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz to describe the quality of intimacy and interaction in the third space. I like how you made a comparison between the past and the present use of real time broadcasting, it really shows the evolution of what the third space is used for.
Very well written and intriguing research critique on the Big Kiss. You are right, for those of us born before the Internet, the transformation to the third space represents a radical changing in thinking and way of life. While for the Millennials, it is a way of life, you have never known a world without the Internet and the Web. That said, a work such as the Big Kiss, is important for understanding the world we live in, because it examines the quality of intimacy we feel with people at a distance, as you point out. One comment: in regards to defining the third space, it is more than the screen where it all takes place, but it is the CONNECTION of screens and cameras and mics so that we can inhabit the screen together. Very good work!

Wonderful and detailed description of Paul Sermon's Telematic Dreaming. One way that you can expand on your research critique of the work is to also examine the implications. First, what is the third space? How do we define it? I discuss this in my essay and so you want to bring in some of what I have said to help illustrate your description of the work. Secondly, what is the artist trying to say? Think about how a work such as Telematic Dreaming investigates the quality of intimacy despite geographical separation. This kind of analysis reveals a lot about what we all experience each and every day as we communicate with people at a distance through social media, texting, phone calls, etc. This way we understand our world a little better through the critique of artistic works.

Excellent piece and you captured the essence of the third space extremely well. Your writing is very poetic and evocative, conceptually well-tuned to the subject matter. One area for improvement: I would like to see more detail about the work itself, some specifics, incidents, etc., which help illustrate your strong conceptual thinking. In other words, blending concrete examples, such as when the members of Second Front fly far above the bank robbery site, defying the laws of gravity (magic) in the distributed space of Second Life. Otherwise, this is very well done.
