Research Critique on ‘The Big Kiss’ (2007) by Annie Abrahams

‘The Big Kiss’ (2007) is a performance installation by Annie Abrahams. Using webcam technology, two performers engaged in the act of kissing through a split screen. Annie Abrahams is intrigued by the ‘possibilities and limits of communication in general and more specifically investigates its modes under networked conditions’. Hence, her works Read more →

I like the idea when you discussed about the feeling of intimacy through this interaction in the third space, it leaves me to question if people are actually able to find comfort despite not having any real world interaction.
Excellent! I had no idea about the Kissenger, that's a real find. Maybe someone could do a performance project and test it out! You touched on all the important points, particularly your critique of intimacy at a distance in the third space. I suspect from devices like the Kissenger, that increasingly we will have artificial, telematically stimulated points of contact on an increasing basis. But you bring up an important point about the ethical ramifications of intimacy at a distance, or should I say intimacy on demand. Great research!!

Grand Theft Avatar?

@ Jasmine

The moment I received this assignment, I went ahead to watch the video Grand Theft Avatar by Second Front. To be honest, I was completely lost in the video because I could not understand what was going on in the video. Upon researching and re-watching the video a couple of times, I think I am able to gain a better Read more →

Considering you had some difficulty understanding the work, you did a great job describing it in all of its detail! And you made an important observation that the performers were in fact live in their various remote locations in order to interact together in Second Life. My only comment is to focus a little more on the topic of the week, in this case the third space, and explain why in fact, the third space might be less restrictive as you rightly point out. Good work!

Back in November 1980, artists named Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz (K&S) dabbled in the functionalities of satellite technology to create one of their many remarkable works. Hole-in-space was a 3-day project which involved the connection of people from across two distant areas. Two big screens were respectively set up in front of Lincoln Center for Performing Arts in NYC Read more →

Very good! One comment: be sure to make your images larger, you can do that with the editor or when you import them. Yes, as you say, despite distance and separation, there is in fact "emotional bandwidth" and Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz point out, meaning: the quality of human emotion and intimacy despite being in separate locations. That is precisely at the heart of our study of the third space. What does the project reveal about the third space, what have you learned from it that you can apply to your own experience in the third space? These are some questions to ask your research critique. Very good!

@ Shu

The Open Source model is one that gives everybody the right to be a content creator.

Before the advent of Open Source, the Proprietary media had limited our practice to our a selective pool of message senders, particularly those who were practiced media. Open Source gave anyone who had access to this system an opportunity to publish their messages through this Read more →

Very good! I am just now reading it because it was turned in after our previous class, so please be sure to publish your essays on time so you can get quick feedback. You essentially covered all the important aspects of open source, the distinction from proprietary, and how it encourages sharing and collaboration.

Before I start rambling on the readings here is a video summarizing the concept of open source:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8fHgx9mE5U

Like the name suggests. open source is a open platform facilatating the exchange, appropriation, collaboration, contribution, amplify, information and methodology among artist and even with the audience.

Unlike the traditional proprietary of artist creation, where its a one way conversion Read more →

Excellent!! I am very impressed that you came up with Miriam Abramovic's Rhythm 0 as an example of open source, in which she invites members of the audience to interact with objects, including a gun! This piece is much like Yoko Ono's Cut Piece and we'll take a look at it today in class. You demonstrate an excellent understanding of open source thinking, very good work.

Summary of the readings

Open Source is a platform where the community can access to shared information, utilizing the human capital to a greater extent. Stemming from the hacker culture, Open Source, liberated the otherwise restricting and inflexible means of creative production, promoting DIWO (Do It With Others).

Open Source allow for virtual sharing of content using the World Wide Web on Read more →

Excellent, and very thorough! I was very impressed with your understanding of open source thinking, it's history, and its application. Particularly impressive was the research you did about Richard Stallman and his open source initiatives. However, I wouldn't say that open source is a tool, I would call it a method, or better yet, a philosophy of sharing.  I very much liked the video you shared and in face, in the spirit of open source, I though I would share it with the rest of the class. Great work!!

Very good assessment of OSS, although OSS was not created until 2012. I wish I had thought of it in the 1990s! I would advise that you consider discussing the many aspects of open source practices, the artistic use, etc., and go beyond your focus on OSS. While your discussion of OSS is very good, we will be discussing many other aspects of open source thinking and how it has impacted our study of the art of the social practice.

@ A blog for Liz

‘Open source as a Culture’ by Siva Vaidhyanathan highlights the positive effects of Open Studio, however the essay also focuses on the negative. Open Studio Practice ‘increases the creativity’ with idea sharing. However it also results in the issues of Copyright and increase in online hackers. The creation of the internet results in increased accessibility to ideas, images, information etc, it Read more →

I really like the way you structure your points, very clear and concise!!
Good work! I like the fact that you are looking at both sides of the issue of open source vs proprietary. And as you point out, this difficult issue is seen to have great creative benefit in the arts, as well as how we use open source thinking in our OSS platform to organize and communicate our work and ideas. Just as we are doing right now in this post!!

The open source is an outlet that goes against propriety models as discussed in Vaidhyanathan’s essay. Open source has always been the norm before propriety models came into the picture. Society began to get accustomed towards propriety models which overshadows open source. When copyright was introduced into propriety software, it stopped users from exploiting or copying information online. With such, Read more →

Very good presentation of both sides of the issue. You captured very well the pros and cons of open source, and how it can be used creatively by artists. Besides the featured image, be sure and make your posts more visual, using images to help communicate ideas. And when you use references, be sure to quote with blockquotes. We will go over that in class this evening. Good work!

Open source SUMMARy

@ Farz

Open source is a platform for individuals to share their creative process and ideas. The first article discusses about the risks and downside of a interconnected and media-driven world. Siva also points out the change in the way we project things from past to present times. In the past, copyright was originally for physical copies or media. However, in Read more →

Ros, I like your enthusiasm! You captured some of the main points of open source, but I am curious to know: why do you think that proprietary methods of copyright and ownership might be considered selfish? That is a strong statement, perhaps correct, but should be explained. Be sure and use images that help communicate your ideas, images that are drawn from the readings, rather than "magazine-style" graphics. It would also be helpful to use more concrete examples rather than taking a general approach, even though your comments are very good.
GOOD JOB
