Adding on piles of glitch for a group collaboration in class. I really enjoyed editing the photos because you are supposed to screw up. I always feel stressed when I used photoshop and ‘command-Z’ would always be my emergency button whenever I screwed up but today in class I felt REAL freedom!! I didn’t have to think about what I Read more →

Yes, I agree a beautiful transformation, I particularly like the next to last image. Isn't it liberating to be able to "screw up" an image, to not only allow the degradation of the image, but to revel in it! Very good description.

What a spectacular transformation of the original! Well, now that I have provided the concept, it is all yours to utilize and enjoy for the rest of your work. Glitch is a powerful means of looking at the digital image and its processing in an entirely different way. And when the image passes through the group member's hands, as you point out, there is a kind of freedom of expression that seems to transcend the individual artist. Good work!

So my group members edited my image something along the lines of the image below.

Elizabeth, it's a bit difficult to see the detail in the image because it is so small. Is it possible you can enlarge it so I can see it more clearly? Wordpress allows you to use a large size in the image editor.

Very nice, it's as though the image is constructing a veil. The question though is how did the glitched image benefit from the collective process, did it add an element of surprise, did it enhance the overall result?

I am very curious about how this image represents your internal state. Very interesting! And especially interesting that you attribute the final result to how your classmates know you well. My question, though maybe you have answered it, is how did the collective process impact the image. I am guessing that you are saying it is a kind of group portrait of your inner self. Am I right?

Very nice, although I think my favorite is "glitch 2." I am curious how the group process creates a result that you would never imagine yourself. This is very true, but do you think that working collectively allows us to move outside our comfort zone, our habits? That is precisely the goal of the project.

Not only your images dissolve into the ether, but your writing as well. Very nice! I am interested though in how you feel the collective process impacted the results of the transformed, glitched image. Did it produce a result you would never have pursued by yourself?

The video starts with a zoomed in clip of a girl in a video talking. The camera slowly zooms out to reveal more videos of other individuals. Their voices start to merge and you cannot hear a single voice.

Hello World is ‘an immersive video installation featuring over 5000 video diaries found on the internet’, all framed on a big screen that Read more →

(Sorry I was late getting to this essay, somehow I missed it when I was going through this week's research critiques.) Excellent! I was very impressed how you picked up on the irony of a multitude of voices all speaking simultaneously, at the same time, like a chorus, but without a true connection between them. Isn't that often the condition of social media? We are all posting, sharing, etc., but are we heard? Well, I think sometimes yes, but many times we are just lone voices in the crowd as so beautifully demonstrated in Christopher Baker's Hello World. I thought this was a very fine essay that asked some interesting questions about alienation, separation, individuality, the real and the virtual. Excellent.

Telegarden // A Change in Perspective

@ WILDFLOWER

When we hear the word “gardening”, it usually involves physical soil space, a hand trowel, seeds, watering can. What the Telegarden team have created in 1995 has totally changed our perspective of gardening, replacing our hands with cursors and mouse clicks. Each action in the Telegarden, totally controllable at the comfort of your home, through a screen.

This web-interface allows netizens Read more →

Excellent research and glad to see you found the quote of mine from a very long time ago! Your description of the Telegarden is quite good and covers many of the key concepts about gardening at a distance. The only thing missing is the reference to the work as a collective artwork, how its use for social interaction was one of the key elements of our discussion of collective narrative. Otherwise, this a very fine essay.
