A Collaborative New Media: The World's Longest Sentence

@ Shu

The World’s Longest Sentence is an interactive art piece that is enabled by the collaborative contributions of the audience through a website. The site instructs them to “continue the sentence” by submitting material of varying type – including text, image, video and sound.

The audience member is unaware of what precedes in the sentence. I contributed by submitting the phrase Read more →

You made an important distinction here between the World's Longest Collaborative Sentence and our everyday use of Google Docs. The former of course is an artwork, but also, it contains explicit, if open, instructions for user participation and interaction. We see how the artwork in the collective sense becomes a script for an unfolding user experience in the collective artwork. One comment: I'm not sure how this work demonstrates augmented reality, it's possible, you should elaborate on that, and while I would agree that this is an example of the third space, that too could use some clarification. Otherwise, very good!

I would like to give a name to this screenshot, e-connect. A lot of things in our daily life are going “e” (Electronic) because of technology. For example, e-mail, e-ticket, e-commerce and etc.. Technology improves the quality and efficiency of our lives. Today, we are able to connect with each other easily in the third space which the technology creates. Read more →

I am so glad you recognize the importance of negotiation. Without that all important key word, it would have been impossible to perform such an amazing X across our Webcams in such tight coordination.

The keyword Randall Packer emphasised upon was “negotiation”: our adjacent positions on Adobe Connect made it important to collude with each other in order to achieve the various tasks assigned to us. It takes a while to reach that conclusion, especially where negotiation often connotes the act of “discussing” to reach a consensus, which did not quite happen (as opposed Read more →

Glad to see you recognized the importance of negotiation! Critical to performance these kinds of synchronized events in the third space, as well as our everyday social interactions with others.

SUMMARY

The third space. A space that combines our current space with another space. Yet, it is nearly impossible to coexist in two of the spaces simultaneously. However, this does not mean that we can not communicate with other who have stepped into the third space along side you. In a sense as we step into the third space, we are Read more →

Many wonderful thoughts here and the image you shared is a real beauty! Excellent documentation and thoughts on the third space and the telematic embrace.

Hello World!

@ Jasmine

Hello World! is a work by artist Christopher Baker where he compiles over 5000 videos of different individuals speaking to an imagined audience from their private spaces onto a single screen as an installation to talk about participative media and the human desire to be heard. He is inspired by the interconnectivity present in our world today, where we might Read more →

Very good point about whether or not Hello World constitutes the third space. When people are unable to communication with one another, and furthermore, when they are speaking asychronously, that is, not at the same time, is this the third space? We should discuss this class. However, the focus of this particular research critique was on the "collective artwork," so that is where you want to direct your assessment. Also, be sure and incorporate some aspect of the reading in your research critique, which was to re-read the section on the Collective Artwork from my Open Source Studio essay.

The World’s Longest Collaborative Sentence (1994) by Douglas Davis.

Born in Washington DC 1933, Douglas Davis was an artist, critic, professor and author. He played an active role in the field of contemporary art since 1960. One of his first few artwork, he set up a live satellite performance through the use of interactive technology as a medium for art Read more →

Very good piece, excellent research, and great description of the work. I would have liked to have seen you though comment on how this is an example of a "collective artwork," and to use a reference/quotation from the assigned chapter on the Collective Artwork from my essay Open Source Studio. However, you presented a very compelling analysis of the work, it's contents, and the collective process of users from around the world able to collaborate on a single sentence. And good research for uncovering Douglas Davis' earlier work using satellite technology.

Telematic Embrace: Adobe Connect Experience

@ hello

So this past week we tried using adobe connect in class! Adobe connect allowed us to be in the first space and third space at the same time, since we were doing the adobe connect activity in class, and we could see each other physically and virtually.

We completed little tasks that Randall Packer set for us: align your fingers with Read more →

Introduced to the world of Adobe Connect, it was the first time I have heard and experienced this application. In class, we experimented and immersed ourselves into the Third space as a team.

We talked about emotional bandwidth expanded over the years, from simple texting, to calling, to Facetime and social broadcasting. Through the development of this, we are able to Read more →

“Hello World!” or: HOW I LEARNED TO STOP LISTENING AND LOVE THE NOISE  is a video installation piece put together by Christopher Baker in 2012. First-time video diaries of over 5000 people all over the world taken from Facebook and Youtube are stitched together on a large screen as seen in the image above.

From afar, it just looks like blinks of Read more →

Excellent! And you made good uses of the essay on Collective Narrative to argue your points. That is precisely the goal of the research critique. Yes, Christopher Baker, somewhat ironically, assembles hundreds of YouTube videos to bring everyone's voices together, however, those voices seem to get lost in a sea of personal stories. The question is then how personal are those stories when they get lost in the collective mix? That is an important question being asked and you did a great job analyzing the work.

The Telegarden Review

The Telegarden – Directed by both Ken and Joseph, is a telerobotic garden displayed through an online platform that acquiesces users to interact and connect with the garden. Inspired mainly by the internet, through a small screen, one will see what looks like an industrial robotic arm who takes your biddings.

Good research! You captured much of the intent of the artist Ken Goldberg in creating a new form of gardening at a distance through what is called "telepresence," meaning being present at a distance. I am curious if you think that Goldberg was attempting to forecast a new kind of gardening technique, or whether there is a certain irony here that with the Internet we have come to distance ourselves from nature and gardening. I would also urge you to consider how this work fits into our study of the "collective narrative." Given that Telegarden is essentially an online community garden, which tend to be very social in nature, how he transposed in this work the collective nature of the community garden to the Internet. Of course, the use of chat is an important ingredient of that.
