||        The Big Kiss (2008) is a 3 hour live webcam networked art piece by Dutch Performance artist Annie Abrahams, where Annie and her co-performer are physically separated from each other and have themselves perform the act of kissing recorded separately.

In a interview with Randall Packer on Third Space Network’s Networked Conversations, Annie Abrahams observes that there Read more →

It was great that you tried to make connections to the current applications to Annie Abrahams work. Although her installation piece was rather disturbing in some sense, the use of similar concept and idea in current applications actually made me rethink about her installation in terms of the relatability and relevance to our society.
Excellent research critique! In fact, you have demonstrated an exemplary essay that is incredibly well researched and written. You are right: Annie Abrahams's work, because it is live and on video conferencing, fully reveals the implication of distance on the acts of intimacy. This is in great contrast, as you point out, to the glossy Internet social spaces that attempt to bring people together. I am particularly pleased to see you doing original research, even going to the effort of watching my interview with Annie Abrahams. I am so pleased with this piece!!

Hole-in-Space

“Art challenges technology, and technology inspires art.”

– John Lasseter, Chief creative officer of Pixar Animation Studios, Walt Disney Animation Studios and DisneyToon Studios.

In 1980, a live art instillation situated in both New York and California simultaneously is considered one of the earliest forms of live networked media art. This instillation titled, “Hole-in-Space” was launched by artist Kit Galloway and Sherrie Read more →

Excellent piece and very well researched. Don't forget to make use of the essay to help support your arguments. One of the things I was most impressed with in your essay is the shift between artist and audience: how the audience becomes the artist and the artist becomes the audience. This is very true. I would like to add an additional role of the artist, and that is the role of the "interaction design." The artists in this case design a system of communication for audience interaction and enabled the members of the audience to communicate across the distance, and essentially compose their own experience. THAT, in essence, was a very new idea in 1980. Excellent work.

You raise some very interesting and compelling points about the "reality" of what we see online. You are right, this distortion of truth and authenticity is a significant aspect of the networked experience. So the question to think about is how to this loss of the real impact intimacy and social relations online? This is what Annie Abrahams is asking. Also, an important element of the third space is the idea of the collapse of distance, which I discuss in my essay. So think about how the third space bring people together from difference locations into a third, networked space.
HI :)) I love the title hahaha it's so eye-catching. I really liked how you cross referred to the Eggs artwork to show the idea of the distorting reality, and yeah I haven't actually looked at The Big Kiss so your summary was really quite comprehensive in explaining it to me haha

Grand Theft Avatar – As a Third Space

The Third Space has an ability to collapse space and time through a “fragmented and augmented perception of reality”, according to Randall Packer.

We are connected to each other within this space, despite factors of reality that may hinder this connection. An example of such a network is Grand Theft Avatar — a live interactive performance art by Second Read more →

Very good description of how the third space activates and enables artworks such as Grand Theft Avatar to go beyond the real in telling a story and providing a space for actors to realize the impossible, such as flying and riding a missile. And like I have just done, I would also include specific examples from the artwork to illustrate your excellent points. In other words, talk about the story, what happened, the theft of the Linden bank, as best you can, rather than only speaking in general terms. In other words, try to be more concrete, even when it is virtual!

To understand Grand Theft Avatar, we must first understand its medium, the online 3D virtual world, Second Life. While it has a virtual currency, it is technically not a game in that there “is no manufactured conflict, no set objective” (Catherine Smith). It is, however, similar to what we know as sandbox games, and massive multiplayer online role-playing games Read more →

Excellent research and your examples are very interesting! Yes, you right, in the third space, just about anything can happen when you are not bound to the constraints of reality, gravity, location, and character. You can be anyone, you can go anywhere, you can fly, you can build your own world. That is certainly the allure of the third space, and we can see how Second Front has used the third space as a virtual theater for staging situations that would be impossible in the physical world.

On a November evening in 1980, a remarkable performance art, Hole in Space was held on the two sides the United States. Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz had their two life-sized screens installed at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York City and the department store at the open-air Shopping Center in Los Angeles. Very good description of Hole in Space, and your detailed account of the three day performance/installation was quite nicely detailed. I would like to see more of a description about how this piece uses the third space, and what exactly the third space means as defined in my essay. So you want to balance the detail you have provided within the conceptual framework of the week's topic, which in this case is the third space. But very nicely written in terms of the what took place in this amazing networked art piece.

[EI] Telematic Dreaming and the Third Space

Randall Packer asserts that “The laws of the known world have been all but abandoned in the third space: it is a space of invention and possibility.” Indeed, Telematic Dreaming brings two people, thousands of kilometers apart, together. While it should not be possible that they would both be able to interact with each other simultaneously in a shared space, Read more →

Excellent! I would like to hear more about the connection between Cartesian Dualism and our virtual bodies co-mingling in the third space. Your exposé very nicely investigates the question of intimacy, despite geographical separation and proximity. This is the very essence of the third space, as you point out, how we are able to inhabit together networked space, while still feeling a strong sense of touch and closeness. Why is this? This is the big question we ask in our study of networked culture.

Felicia and I thought of a couple other ideas before settling on our final idea: we thought about playing hide and seek on camera (with penalties), dancing to Bruno Mars songs, or interviewing people in religious places in an attempt to understand different religions better – in the end, we settled on a Tinder-in-real-life concept.

Felicia and I would find guys Read more →

Sherry Rabinowitz & Kit Galloway, Hole in Space, 1980.

On November 1980, Sherry Rabinowitz and Kit Galloway had set up a live sized two way broadcast connecting the East and West coast through a satellite, called “Hole in Space”. It was unannounced, with no signs, no credits nor explanation to what it is. This installation ran for Read more →

Great piece, and I am so delighted that you mentioned the idea of "emotional bandwidth," a term that was coined by Kit Galloway and Sherrie Rabinowitz to describe the quality of intimacy and interaction in the third space. And you raise an important question about how the third space, and our daily interactions in the virtual realm, have impacted our sense of reality. That is a great question and one we will explore in class this evening. My only comment is to remember to incorporate the assigned essay into your research critique. Great work!!

The Big Kiss: why?

The Big Kiss (2007) performed by Annie Abraham. Two people, one of which is Annie Abraham, sit in two separate places in front of a webcam. Their two feeds go onto a screen split down the centre, and they ‘kiss’ each other through this screen. This screen is thus the third space which is discussed in Randall Packer’s Read more →

I like how you made a comparison between the past and the present use of real time broadcasting, it really shows the evolution of what the third space is used for.
Very well written and intriguing research critique on the Big Kiss. You are right, for those of us born before the Internet, the transformation to the third space represents a radical changing in thinking and way of life. While for the Millennials, it is a way of life, you have never known a world without the Internet and the Web. That said, a work such as the Big Kiss, is important for understanding the world we live in, because it examines the quality of intimacy we feel with people at a distance, as you point out. One comment: in regards to defining the third space, it is more than the screen where it all takes place, but it is the CONNECTION of screens and cameras and mics so that we can inhabit the screen together. Very good work!
