Third Space Fallacy

A Third Space Fallacy is an experimental interaction performance on third and first space that combines the responses collated on the third space through Instagram polls and stories to curate the next move in a friendship conflict between two girls, Bella and Daphne. To make the entire performance as real as possible, both girls had to Read more →

I really like your conclusion: that the role of the artist is to make the world a better place. That is a great aspiration! I thought the Third Space Fallacy was a very successful project, full of drama, intrigue and blurring of the real and the virtual. The strongest aspect of the piece was the Instagram Stories, very smartly composed, but I only wish that you had foreground them in the video. (See my separate email notes). Your description of the story was very well detailed and I learned many new things about how the drama unfolded, particularly the role of the viewer and how they truly believed it was real. I thought it was very touching that many of them felt somehow relieved but a bit betrayed by having been brought into the drama. But I think that was one of the main points of the piece: how social media can become our reality. It is as though we are scripting a collective drama every single day! Very good work.

‘Let’s Play Stranger Art is a collaborative performance inspired by the works of Blast Theory, a UK-based performance group that creates interactive performances that engage the public community in site-specific locations. Excellent description and context of your project "Let's Play Stranger Art." I thought you captured very nicely the changing role of the viewer as central to the creation of the piece, rather than as a mere observer of the work. This is precisely the social element we have been studying this semester and you described it very well. Your description could have included some details of the work, such as specific drawings, and how it was displayed on Instagram. Screenshots would have helped to illustrate the ideas and concept you explained so well. Also, when you include references to other artworks, it would help to also you media illustrations and provide more details, since you can't assume the reader knows enough to understand the comparison. Otherwise this is a very fine paper and a very compelling social artwork. I'll send you notes about the video in a separate email.

Very good Daphne: the idea of a community of artists. And to activate this idea, you as the artist or "social designer" need to create that community, and I thought your ability to inspire viewers to draw was very well done. I thought your detailed description of the work was quite good, however, I would have liked to have seen more specific references to the drawings themselves, rather than providing one large grid. But I can see that the viewers were very creative in their depictions. Although you mentioned Blast Theory and a few other works from the course, you need to explain how these projects were influential in more detail, otherwise the reader, who may not necessarily know these work, may have no idea of how they are similar. You can't assume that we know what you are implying, it needs to be stated as part of the analysis of the work. I really liked the project though and as I mentioned, it was very successful in creating an experimental interaction with your viewers. I am sending a separate email with my feedback on the video.

The Final Project

For our final project for Experimental interaction we are asked to create a social project that will allow us to interact with others. We formed small groups and began brainstorming what we could do for the interaction portion. Mostly our project revolves around ‘playing games’ with strangers that we meet on the streets, in a way to see Read more →

I thought Play Stranger Things is a very compelling piece and was quite successful at activating the viewer as a participant and collaborator in your work. There were some details that you pointed out that helped me to better understand the work, such as the way in which you color coded the cue cards. I thought that was very effective! I would have liked to have seen though stronger references to the class concepts, readings, artworks, and artists. You briefly mentioned Blast Theory, but without more specifics I don't really understand how your work compares to their projects. I think the reference to Blast Theory would have been better earlier, so that you could make a stronger conclusion about your excellent piece. I will provide notes on the video in a separate group email. This is a very fine piece and good description, just need stronger references and more decisive conclusion that summarized the social, interactive nature of your project.

This is an excellent essay, funny, and quite erudite. You have a wicked sense of humor that is most illuminating. I really liked your honest critique of the piece, how you were controlled and not controlled, how you succumbed to control and avoided it as well. How you carried out assigned actions, and made up many of your own. I feel like you as an artist in the group took a step back and provided a clear assessment of its intent, execution and outcome. This is highly perceptive and shows you are not just repeating information but you are thinking. Really thinking. Excellent. A few comments: I would have like to have seen some additional media and screenshots to illustrate your observations, as well as some references to the artists, topics, readings, etc., from the class. But aside from that I really enjoyed your essay and your cunning ability to deconstruct and evaluate the whole process. You have a very strong, independent mind and artistic sensibility. Keep up the good work.

|| Using the social broadcasting platform of Facebook live, my group decided to do an interactive project called ‘Experimental Fashun’ (‘Fashion’ stylised as ‘Fashun’). Very good essay! I really appreciated your discussion of online shopping, in which you don't know exactly what you are getting, whether it will fit and how it might combine with other pieces. In Experimental Fashun, I can see how you in a sense reversed this idea by allowing the viewer to make the selection and be the curator of your outfit. And I also appreciate how this might take you out of your comfort zone in terms of personal fashion, and how you display your digital identity via social social. Of course, that is one function of art, to take us outside of our comfort zone, particularly when it is of an interactive, socially-participatory form of art. I would have liked to have seen stronger references to Blast Theory, DIWO, and digital identity, concepts we discussed very thoroughly this semester. Specific works of Blast Theory, examples of DIWO, and how we have addressed digital identity might have strengthened your argument. The reference to Annie Abrahams, for example, might have compared your work to her protocols, which were tightly scripted actions to be carried about by her collaborators. How does this relate to the actions you requested of your viewer-participants? Otherwise, a fine, detailed, informative essay.

Curating Them is an interactive performance piece that explores the control of social media over a person’s real life decisions and our willingness to let it happen and shape our digital identity. This will play out over Instagram Story, using the poll function as our voting system. There will be two parties posting pre-determined questions at the same time. However, Read more →

Pushing the boundaries of Experimental Fashun

The above are some of the ideas we came up with prior to finalisation. Eventually, we settled with #2 since we felt it has the highest potential to push the boundary of DIWO between 2 people through the use of social broadcast via Facebook. The title of our final project is named as “EXPERIMENTAL FASHUN“, which means Read more →
