OVERVIEW

Daphne and I decided to create the live broadcast of us getting ready for school in the morning, as both of us experienced long-distance friendships. We always eat with friends through video call or co-broadcasting. Sometimes, we will just leave the broadcast on and do our own work without talking. Thus, for this project, we planned to do our Read more →

As the remaining three amigos, we decided to do a double pairing, in which my partner became Bella. After a few brainstorms, we decided to do something ordinary for girls, something that happens daily for most girls. This led to the idea of girls getting ready together. Have you ever wondered why girls go to the bathroom together or even Read more →

Tele-Stroll

Summary

For this micro-project, my friends and I were put in a group of three. Resulting in my friend doing the project twice. However, for my project, we decided to do it about food. She and I are from different cultures and our original plan was centered around the differences in our cultures food. However, due to the factors such as; Read more →

I am intrigued by the mirrored effects of both the actual mirror and the one produced by the broadcast. Great idea! We'll discuss further in class.

We had our first experimental interaction class today! I decided to record down my notes from class and conduct some further research on the works we discussed, as Mr Packer mentioned that Cut Piece was a classic (it was mentioned again in the reading he gave us).

What we discussed in class Yoko Ono – Cut Piece (1964)

Bala, this is excellent!! Your essay includes exactly what I am looking for: specific examples and references to support your analysis, use of relevant images to illustrate the ideas, and a well crafted essay that summarizes the readings. I will share your work with class as a very thorough assignment.
I like how you use various examples and media in your writing, it makes your work interactive and further proves the point of open source practice.
Very detailed summary! The examples give me a better understanding of the articles.
Thanks Bella!
Thanks Mr Packer! I'll continue to do the same for the subsequent assignments.

The term “open-source” is used to describe software, of which its source code is available for perusal and modification. This is in direct opposition of proprietary software, which restricts access to its source code. Predictably enough, however, the concept of proprietary software became pervasive once the profitability of software as a commodity was established.

Essentially, the harshness of the closed Read more →

Hey there!! I thought that the Permanent Redirect art that you shared was really interesting! I was trying to click on the link to access the art but then they kept giving me an error message and then I realised that was the whole point of the art piece. 8'D I love the concept, making use of URL redirecting that is something that is unique to the Internet, and it makes me REALLY want to find out what the actual art piece looks like... but I guess we'll never see it.
Excellent work, very well written, and well referenced. You made several important observations about the relationship between open source thinking and the art of the social practice, which was the purpose of assigning these essays. We are trying to understand some of the underlying principles of the social practice, and your essay demonstrates exceptionally how open source leads to more collaborative forms of artistic practice. It might be helpful to include some description as to why the two artworks you cited are important to your critique.

Some excellent points regarding the complexity of ownership and copyright issues as it pertains to technology and particularly to software. I am not familiar with all the examples you cited so perhaps you can share with the class, because I think you are adding an interesting addition to the history I am discussing. One issue you need to resolve: it is impossible to read your post without manually highlighting the text. You either need need to change the customization of your theme or find a new theme altogether. Perhaps you are trying to "glitch" our Wordpress reading? ;)

@ Daphne Ngatimin

Leaping one step further into expanding the digital world and innovative platforms, such as Linux or GNU, Randall Packer went ahead and expanded these innovations by creating the Open Source Studio (OSS).

The term open source originated in the context of software development to designate a specific approach to creating computer programs. Open Source Studio (OSS) is a joint, Read more →

Daphne, this is a great summary of OSS and how it emerges from open source thinking. I am very appreciative of your enthusiasm. A few points of advice: be sure and also explain what we mean by open source by directly citing from the essays. And more specifics regarding examples of open source software besides OSS (such as Wikipedia), as well as the creative practices resulting from open source thinking as cited in my essay. And also, if you are drawing specific references, be sure to use quotes so it is clear what is your writing and what you are citing.
