001 – Pandora Revisited

3 weeks (19/1 - 2/2) Objective Ability to develop a design language & manipulate a basic 3D volume with operative verbs.  The basic 3D volume should fit within a 35mm cube. Use the basic 3D volume as a module to create a pattern on a base volume of surface area 140mm x 210mm (depth to be determined) that can be adapted as a receptacle. There should be a sense of D, SD and SO in the resulting pattern. Deliverables 3D Model Composition: 3D Sketch Model(s) + Functional Prototype Technical Drawings: Orthographic drawing- plan, section, elevation, orthographic projection Model-making techniques: Sculpting in  Clay, Foam, Plaster, or Wax; and Casting in Silicon/ Latex ...

002 – Kokopelli’s Sound Shaper

5 weeks (9/2 – 9/3) Objective Ability to translate rhythmical patterns from a chosen acoustical environment recording into a physical wearable fabric/ form, which in turn interacts with the motion of the user to create sounding ‘auralscapes’. Through research and prototyping based on selected sound lexicon, corporeal geometry and human range of motion, construct a portable ‘Sound-shaper’ that can accommodate user movement. Deliverables 3D Model Composition: 3D Sketch Model(s) + Portable ‘Sound-shaper’ Prototype Technical Drawings: Orthographic drawing- plan, elevation (sectional elevation), ‘kit-of-parts’ assembly (exploded paraline) drawings Model-making techniques: Paper (Fabric) manipulation. Structural patterning in fabrics (or equivalent). Recyclable mixed-media assembly using sewing/soldering techniques. Assignment Sequence
  1. In pairs, choose an acoustically “Pleasant” and ...

003 – In the Eyes of Kinetic Beasts

6 weeks (16/3 - 20/4) Objective Using the  5 senses as a design generator of a “ Kinetic Beast” installation that is inspired by the various degrees of symbiotic relationships (mutualistic, commensalistic, parasitic) between selected creatures/ animals  & research into their range of movement; Kinesthesia explorations as an opportunity for originality in design. Demonstrating built-to-scale & assembly skills. Identifying appropriate automat precedents. Deliverables 3D Model Composition: 3D Sketch Models + Functional Prototype Technical Drawings: A fully self-explanatory set-up pamphlet incorporating both elements of orthographic projection, kit-of-parts assembly & perspectives. Model-making techniques: Suitable automat assembly skill set.
