Week 13 (Final Presentation)

The Nest

Our design is inspired by bird nests found in nature. A bird’s nest is a symbol of the home, an abode where we grow and prosper. A good luck symbol, the bird’s nest represents love and warmth, providing protection and concealment. Nests in nature are built in a random fashion using carefully selected twigs Read more →

Behind the scene; Making of ‘Nest’

Tools & Materials

Short field trip to HDB Hub During the weekends, we went on a short field trip to HDB Hub with aims as stated below; – To check out how the professional build architecture mock-up models. – To bring these inspiration to our mock-up model

Combined post for week 10 & 11

Moving on from Week 9, We went off to study existing ‘playground’ design to understand the engineering behind it. Based on the study, we explored the way in which the structure is design, methods of assembly and how the ropes are arranged so that it can support the pressure/weight/tension introduced by the users.

Here are some pictures Read more →

As seen above, this is our scale model of the design for the nest, that we have arrived at up till the ideation for week 8. However, there are still improvements to be made. The curved support structure sprouting from the centre feels too engineered, and detracts from the form of a natural bird’s nest. Furthermore, the halo Read more →

It looks better now, ok where do you see it positioned? would you allow greenery on the structure? vines on the ropes...
Thank you for your feedback (: We intend to place the installation outside Centre of Research and Development Office (See Week 8 entry). Yes, we will allow plants and vines to grow on the structure to make it feel more homogeneous with nature.. and bring nature closer to users.

After last week’s consultation, we’ve decided to narrow down our concept to focus on the curved bench idea. Building upon the original concept, we developed a new form for the seating installation.

Here are the issues that were brought up in the previous model: – Exterior design doesn’t feel like a bird nest because it is too neat – Open door design destroys Read more →

ok, this shape start to become more significant what kind of materials are you proposing for the structure, and for the roof? carefully consider the materials since your choice will strongly define the nest design (wood, bamboo, metal...?) one suggestion: the supporting structure (curved pillars) looks too much man-made, too regular, not much as a natural element. can you try to make the curved pillars less conspicuous? maybe thinner sticks will better combine with ropes size ...

DR3005 – Week 7

Expanding on the previous week’s proposition of ideas, we explored the possibility of creating shapes which could cast shadows based on sunlight and artificial lighting.

Shadow casting sketched concept

We wanted to mimic the irregularity and randomness of the nest in nature and as such the arrangement and length of the branches or twigs Read more →

still I cannot see a cohesive and consistent proposal: many ideas but one by one they are not consistent enough for a permanent installation. shadows only is not enough - what does it mean the cubic frame? - the rocking chair is just a small furniture (we are not interested in one individual furniture), the curvy bench could be a starting point but is lacking the dimension/the emphasis to become public art. Can you combine nest, branches, shadows, sharing with animals, nature, all the things until now you were talking about in something significant? I quote my last week comment for the shadow proposal: "remember that, as we said before, it should be a self-sustaining installation, if you need power for lighting you should provide it…" ...did you read it? it means that if you need power you should harvest integrating PV in your design... or shadows are just daytime from the sun...

After brainstorming, we expanded on the idea of the nest as a place not just for animals, but for humans as well. We felt that by incorporating both elements it showed that there could be a harmony between humans and nature.

Last week, we proposed the idea of having a shared space between animals (birds) and humans. However, there is also Read more →

I think you should start making things to show better your concept sharing spaces within humans and birds and nature is fine, natural materials as well. Bamboo construction is an art to master (you can search for many examples, like this in Bali http://ibuku.com/) we need to see the scale of it, the sketches on page one and two look a bit too small. The installation doesn’t have enough presence. It needs more emphasis to be relevant and good looking sharing goods it’s a fine idea, even if I’m not sure how much it will succeed, but having drawers in an organic natural structure sounds out of place. I’m sure you can find better ideas for a drop off area remember that, as we said before, it should be a self-sustaining installation, if you need power for lighting you should provide it...or you should reconsider if it’s really relevant to the concept or not.
Thank you for the feedback, we will look into it.
I found this architectural design that looks like a nest. https://plugin-magazine.com/living/a-modern-take-on-traditional-chinese-dining/

Last week, we presented the concept of the bird nest and the idea that it is a symbol of the home, as well as being a nurturing and conducive environment where we can realise our potential. By having a representation of a nest within NTU, it reflects our university as embodying the attributes mentioned above. This week, we are exploring the Read more →

I agree with the opinion expressed about spaces for both human and nature about birds, it would be great trying to provide opportunities for real nesting, maybe looking into local species / nesting habits about humans, I believe it's not necessary having people literally "using" the nest but maybe suggesting the idea of nest, inspiring the feeling rather than incurring in all those technical and ergonomic problems for sitting on it... look at one of the latest works from tokujin yoshioka and try to draw a parallelism with your project https://www.dezeen.com/2018/02/14/tokujin-yoshioka-creates-cloud-like-sculpture-from-acrylic-rods-houston-one-allen-center-skyscraper/ ...can you design a nest which is a multitude of nests?...

Building on the feedback from the previous presentation We realised that we focused too much on the utilitarian and functional aspects to define our design.

The piece should have a meaning of its own, a narrative and a reason for its inception.

To identify the attributes that define NTU and its students.

Taking cues from the fern bench, we realised that the piece had Read more →
