@ Yaaayu's

For this week, we have started on the making of mock up and finalized the poster too.

MOCK-UP

We will be having 2 sets of mock ups, one will be showing the whole area at a 1:20 scale.

Another set of mock up will be to show the light up effect, but showing only a few seats.

These are the stalks for seats.

it looks it's developing well what about to add to the board, in the materials section or below the renderings, some images of the of the lighted up mock-up details?

In the final revision, we decided to arrange the seats according to the spiral Fibonacci sequence ratio. Clusters of seats will be loosely dispersed around the space to allow individual groups of 2, 3 and 5 to gather within the space at a comfortable distance.

Adjustments:

Fibonacci circular pattern sequence will demarcate the floor tiles to Read more →

Week 11 - Refined Arrangement

@ Yaaayu's

Last week’s comments

1) There was something missing from the whole composition that caused the whole installation to not gel together as one.

2) We have quite a few elements to work with so it is about refining the arrangement of these elements.

3) Comments were to work with any theories that would justify our arrangement.

This week:

1) We have decided to change Read more →

Week 10 Revised Design

We decided to review why our previous design looked very much like Peter  Opsvik’s Garden, here are the key ideas:

Analyzing Garden into elements A. Thick and thin supports B. Branching out from one main support C. Multiple circles in the whole installation D. Seats are very high off ground E. Use of different pattern to differentiate leg rest/seats and backing

What we have in previous design 1. Branching out Read more →

Week 9 Updates

A little recap for last week:

We started on mock up after we had some idea on how we want the whole installation to look like, we used some plasticine and wire to make our mock up.

We did realize that the mock up do not look close to what we’ve imagined.

Key issues for this mock-up: – Lack of Read more →

be careful! you're going too close to Peter Opsvik’s Garden, it might be considered plagiarism please, try to design something substantially different

Week 8: Form ideation

This week’s agenda: Form ideation of seating sculptures.

The initial idea was to complete a series of seating sculptures inspired by the more prominent form in trees: Banyan’s vertical canopy, Tanjong’s long and wavy-edged leaves and Binjai’s fruit.

KS suggested that we redefine these elements into a singular piece instead. We also keep in mind of the purpose Read more →

Recap from last week!

Last week, we have decided on doing public seating to facilitate more interaction in the Communal Plaza of North Hill Halls. The forms will be inspired by our own interpretation of the trees; Fluidity, Transience & Vitality.

Some feedbacks that we’ve received: > Prototype that we did was too abstract and hard for viewers Read more →

can you please define more precisely your proposal? stop with the charts and start to design please keep in mind that a public art installation should reflect and enhance public space dynamics including as much people as possible (a single seat is not interesting for us) and being able to attract the users. Aesthetic quality is a must

Week 06: Transposing design elements into forms

-Recap from last week –

PSD matrix was constructed based on the characteristics of the north hall heritage trees: Banyan = Fluidity, Tanjong = Vitality, Binjai = Transience.

This week we aim to transpose the three design elements into meaningful visual forms that represent its characteristics.

Multiple types of green are already scattered around the communal plaza. Read more →

In my opinion the shapes might be nice but are of difficult interpretation, from the users point of view it might be difficult to see any relation to trees’ attributes. anyway, what they made of? And the seats? ...and very important, where are you getting from the power for lights and sensors?

Lau Yi Wen & Weng Yayu (Group 7)

We had a little site visit last week to check out the 3 trees planted at the new halls.

We got a leaf from each tree to have a closer look and to observe it (shortest leaf – banyan; longest leaf – binjai)

We were pretty amazed by the smell of the leaves of binjai tree Read more →

the symbolism of the trees you highlighted is quite interesting and the matrix help to narrow down the characteristics. I think it's a good starting point from your final thoughts: > Having an open shared place for people to come in and interact. THIS is a good idea. > We might not be using the whole tree there (plant the trees there) as it will not be the center of attraction either instead, we are thinking of using the timber/bark of the 3 trees to build the whole installation. THIS is NOT a good idea: first, it would be difficult to get the bark from those trees, costly and complicate for many reasons to work with it. second, the message you're delivering here is not positive: cut some the trees, to skin them, to obtain some materials you can possibly do better without... is this a good IDEA?? > Abstract way of expressing the characteristic – by using the matrix list – either a sculpture or a shelter. BE sure that your design intentions will be clearly understood from your visitors: how people can interpreter your sculpture? how do they know your matrix criteria? you have a good starting point here: the trees! what is positive about the trees? they live and grow! try to use their positive energy including the trees in your sculpture they will grow with it! the concept of transformation, long lasting, survival, blending between technology and nature should be fundamental values in your work...
