Continuing from our concept of observing the ordinary in NTU and the inspiration of the rays of light caused by the dense morning fog and the trees around the campus, we decided to forgo our original idea of using fog as a medium and focus on the use of light as a material instead.

I think your intentions were declared several times in the last weeks, this new collection of inspiring examples is interesting but now you have to make a serious plan for your design. define location, environmental conditions, and instruments of the project we cannot help if you don't show something that looks like a design proposal please post before the class, so I can check and comment

Gleanings from previous critique session

Questions to ask:

Who is the actor? tired people of NTU that needs to getaway, take a break What is the experience? -Peaceful -Place of rest and getaway -A place to linger -A place where you can close your eyes to experience or to stare into blank space -Comfortable -Cool and comforting How does the context and contents influence the behaviours? -Form>Organic >Soft (Like foam or cloth) -Material used -Color Read more →
well done analytical part but now you should narrow down some starting points. what is it? a labyrinth? where? can you provide sound deprivation or at least sensibly reduce the noise? what kind of materials are most suitable? can you include nature in it? ...need some answers to start....

Last week, we presented the concept of the bird nest and the idea that it is a symbol of the home, as well as being a nurturing and conducive environment where we can realise our potential. By having a representation of a nest within NTU, it reflects our university as embodying the attributes mentioned above. This week, we are exploring the Read more →

I agree with the opinion expressed about spaces for both human and nature about birds, it would be great trying to provide opportunities for real nesting, maybe looking into local species / nesting habits about humans, I believe it's not necessary having people literally "using" the nest but maybe suggesting the idea of nest, inspiring the feeling rather than incurring in all those technical and ergonomic problems for sitting on it... look at one of the latest works from tokujin yoshioka and try to draw a parallelism with your project https://www.dezeen.com/2018/02/14/tokujin-yoshioka-creates-cloud-like-sculpture-from-acrylic-rods-houston-one-allen-center-skyscraper/ ...can you design a nest which is a multitude of nests?...

Purpose Fiona x Shanelle

Moving forward, from our previous progress. We decided that we need to be more specific as to:

How can we improve the well-being of people in the campus? What do we mean by well-being? How can we improve well-being as defined? What is the current situation in a particular context that is lacking that reduces or add Read more →
if I understand correctly you are looking for: allowing parasite plants to climb on the structure, providing shadows, use the pangolin inspired modularity for a tiled structure. what kind of structure are you thinking? where do you think is needed? are these three functions really combining well? are all three really necessary? if asked to choose, which one is more conceptually relevant, more representative of NTU life, more promising of good results?   materials research will follow after fully answering to the above questions

In the last week, we were encouraged to try collecting smells with the use of materials, hence we carried out the experiment shortly after. We used the ‘magic sponge’ that was used for the very first class exercise.

We went around school to ‘plant’ sponges and see Read more →

I'm not sure I can fully understand the output of this research. Can you envision what will be your final output? Remember we are looking for a permanent installation on campus (one single location), with some aesthetic quality and delivering a strong value message, possibly involving users/visitors participation is the sponge sampling really satisfying your intentions and, looking at that permanent installation, is it really sustainable in terms of management/maintenance of the installation? would it be worth looking for materials that have smell on their own? (something can last...) ...and with a good smell :-)...

Week 5: Further refinement

@ UMMI

From the previous week, we have received numerous feedback to further refine our concept.

Firstly, we have decided to focus on the concept of students being the seeds of NTU.

From the feedback of the architectural model in NTU admin building, we thought of including lights to the buildings. The light will lit up indicating the different school/building, and revealing its location Read more →

I see you checked the NTU architectural model, did it help you to understand/decide on which scale to work? I think this is the very first step to complete second step is how to differentiate yourself from those architectural models. they are descriptive, your one should be conceptual. ok to represent some landmarks on campus but the language of representation should be simplified. define what kind of interaction you want the people have with this map. Is this a game? only a game or it can be also useful to some extents? can it be used as an interactive map for visitors orientation, to highlight some destinations? materials: define materials and their use, what why and how. you are mentioning lights and also magnets. everything you expect these materials can do should be proved: test before proceed to avoid unpleasant surprises... remember: how much power do you need? where the power is coming from?...

Reflection from last presentation (Presentation 3):

From the previous presentation, our idea revolves around the notion of the name “Nan yang” where we derived the concept of a fluid structure to represent the southern sea which inspired the name.

In this presentation, we hope to retain the concept of a public and private space represented in a fluid form inspired by the name “Nan Read more →

both concepts sound interesting but, in my opinion, the lighter gives more space to imagination...it flows better more exploration is necessary to define what's public and what's private, and what for how can people interact with the structure? one simple thing to start is to place some human figures around and see how they relate in terms of size and approach. where do they contact, how do they use it?... next would be materials: how to convey the sense of fluidity? any particular material you think fitting with the concept of fluidity? ...

The concept that we have chosen to do is the connectivity of the spine. We were intrigued by the way the bones are connected together therefore we would like to focus on this aspect.

The bones are ‘stacked’ together through the spinal cord and connected by the facet joints. This makes an area of the bones overlap each other and we Read more →

connectivity has a very broad meaning. it's a good concept and a positive one reminding the spine is ok but try to be not too literal when you develop your sketches the unit elements could be scaling up to convey a sense of hierarchy (if you think is necessary) or could be the same unit just repeated in a number of pieces what this installation supposed to be, a sitting area? what kind of functions it might be able to integrate in it (if)? in how many ways it can recall the concept of connectivity? start to play with 3dimensional mockup and use human silhouettes to define size and volume

As we reviewed the feedback from last week, idea 3 regarding smell-absorbing idea was the most interesting concept to develop. Thus, we took into consideration of smell-absorbing agents as our main topic for research.

NASEVO

Nasevo is the nickname given to Ernesto Ventos, a recognised perfumer and creator of scents. He has Read more →

Few points: 1) What form should it take on to communicate that it is a cumulation of smells from the atmosphere and people of NTU overtime? Look at perfume bottles, air fresheners, flowers (nature). 2) Survey the smells of NTU and curate them into a form?

This week we dive back into the research of the three north residential halls: Binjai, Tanjong and Banyan. Our initial idea was to create a light sculpture based on the element forms of flowers from the trees. The purpose is to design a statement piece that people can identify with the NTU heritage trees.

The challenge we Read more →

http://www.coroflot.com/preinecke/bmw-designworks-emotional-addressing The matrix I told you two about. Note how they use the matrix to come to a conclusion on the resulting form.
Sure we'll read it up, thank you :-)
Hi KS! How do we differentiate 'Surface' and 'Texture' in the PSD Matrix??
It is up to your own definition. According to the example I gave you Surface is sort of a 'first impression' while Texture is something which you perceive up-close.
