” Creativity, which is what Modernism is all about, is a constant searching process that promises a greater chance for failure than it does for success.” – Bierut, Michael. Looking Closer. Allworth, 1997

Tracing back to the History of Design, artists and designers were trying to push forward the creative industry by creating a set of new principles. This led Read more →

Sometimes, I feel like people living in Singapore lead a very structured, scheduled life. Compared to the people of Indonesia (I was born and raised in Indonesia), everything in Singapore feels very organized, to the point of rigidity. At first, I thought Singapore would Read more →

I like how your piece gained its inspiration from the origins of Indonesia, which was where you were from :)

I was just walking around when I spotted something that piqued my interest: two different type of flowers growing in the same pot. The first one is bougainvillea, while another one is… some kind of orchid? To be honest, I’m not sure, although I see it around a lot.

Brief

Make a creative composition utilising the three basic shapes: triangles, squares and circles. Fill each shape with its ideal colour. Consider how this could be related to Singaporean culture.

Response

When it comes to describing the Singaporean culture, one of the most commonly used phrase is “East meets West”. Derived from a fusion of both Eastern and Western cultures, Singapore’s culture Read more →

“I don’t believe in change for the sake of change. Change comes about through a natural process of development or because something needs improving. Modernism suggests movement which is ahead of its time. If we do something that has been done before, we are not being creative; we are being redundant. The Bauhaus movement is one that is based on simplicity and streamlined aesthetics. It has influenced a lot of modern architecture. As such, I decided to create a visual that represents a piece of architecture. Due to the minimal shapes that I used, it can be hard to tell but the piece of architecture in the image is an Read more →

The Little Red Dot? Where? All I see is a blue circle.

All Singaporeans should know that “the Little Red Dot” refers to Singapore. It is a nickname often used in the media, as a reference to Singapore. It refers to how the nation is depicted on many maps as a tiny red dot. The concept behind this piece is about Read more →

@ Farz

Singapore is practically known for our ridiculously tall buildings, especially within the CBD area. IN my Bauhaus design, I incorporated long vertical blue bars to represent this. They can also be interpreted as bars in bar charts, demonstrating Singapore’s analytical and competitive spirit.

But despite being all serious and ambitious, Singapore also has a softer and artsy side. This is an Read more →
