Cyberformance with Helen Varley Jamieson

Description

Week 10: March 25 – 30

A presentation/overview of the work of performance artist Helen Varley Jamieson, including a workshop of the new piece to be performed at the Art of the Networked Practice symposium the following week.

Special Time Format

Remember that this week’s class has a special time format:

  • 5:00pm – 6:30pm: Helen Varley Jamieson is speaking in the Library Screening Room
  • 7:30pm – 9:00pm: we will meet in B1-14 for a full rehearsal. Everyone in Media & Performance is expected to attend both unless you have a conflicting class. The second half is “mission critical,” so make sure you are attending the full session.

Assignments

Due Next Week: Tuesday, March 31 (Symposium Performance) (no class on Wednesday, April 1)

1 – Mobile Cam Exercise #3

Here are instructions for our third mobile cam exercise.

Onsite students:

Rehearse your journey, look for dead spots in the Wifi and remember to avoid them. Look for things you might want to pause on between your location and the lobby. Time how long your journey takes when you walk it normally, then rehearse it with pauses and see how close to 10 minutes you can make it. Look for sounds that you can pause by, places where your footsteps are louder, and other audio sources.

Offsite students:

Think about what kind of selfie you will show at the end – what will be in the background, where you might move to. Look at the pirate pad and pick out some text that you can use in the chat. Find things to make sounds, and work out how to position your mic to pick up the sound of your keyboard.

Onsite students in Media & Performance:

When completed, write up a post, include new screenshots, and write a short narrative about the journey and what you discovered in this 3rd exercise.

EVERYONE: Remember to do a walkthrough of the whole piece with your printed final performance instructions. You can also access the instructions on the Symposium Performance project page.
