Project Hyperessay #2 – Technical Realization

@ Real life

I went to try having both YouTube Live and Periscope on at the same time. As periscope had more people watching, it was more interactive on periscope.

It was also quite different having to broadcast on two different platforms and also have my friends in front of me.

People could hear what I was doing in the room over the internet Read more →

You have so many great ideas. So interesting that you have found the live broadcast so comfortable and native to your social interaction. You are truly a digital native! I would like to see you elaborate on this idea when you complete your 3rd and final hyperessay: why do you find the third space so comfortable, why do complete strangers connected via the network seem like true friends. What creates that sense of intimacy despite geographical separation, despite the fact you have no idea who these people really are? The notion of being present in the first space, and through multiple feeds simultaneously in the third space, is truly an exciting and challenging proposition. I would definitely encourage you to take your performance out to the lobby, or somewhere in ADM where you can interact with people in the physical space, while being present in the third space as well. And I like the idea of finding viewer response in any space that is available. That's true resourcefulness!

Project Update 2: YouMAP Night Experiment

The previous experiment was in daylight, everyone awake and the streets busy with something or someone. The noise was a distraction and so were the visuals.

Hence to fully experience dependency on the Google Maps, I decided to take the experiment to the night time and to go through a path that I am aware but am not sure or have Read more →

Project Update

@ Esmond Heng

I took a few videos this week using a GoPro, trying to figure out a way to show a different perspective or perhaps a different way to represent the idea of a network. In many ways the experiments did not work, however they served to lead me on to a better idea for my project.

Below are some very short clips Read more →

I like where this is going, though it looks like you are still feeling your way. The idea of creating a layered space, a third space, but yet not really, since you are the only one inhabiting that space. I have done some photography myself with multiple cameras creating this kind of multi-layered space. We can discuss further an I'll show you some examples in class. Glad to see you being so persistent with finding your way into the project.

So for this week, it was all about experimenting and trying to see how it flows.

The objective was to be able to consciousness focus on the google map to navigate myself to a destination without paying attention to my surroundings visually.

Previously, I had already experimented in school with regard to the way it was to be captured.

Absolutely fascinating. You found a great solution to recording the Google map movement, by combining screen shots with audio capture. Brilliant idea. I think what is interesting in terms of the narrative is simply your response to the environment, the urgency of the situation, the possibilities of danger, in other words, how you are experiencing this disjunct connection to the physical world around you. That is an essential critique and fits squarely with our discussions of the third space. So not to worry about the narrative, just be spontaneous and respond to the immediacy of the situation.

I tested my idea again using a similar set up to last time however this time I tested it with only one person. I sat on the floor with a pile of paper ready to hang up on the wall as we talked. I also had coloured paint this time to emphasise emotions, while this was handy at  times Read more →

Your test Skype sounds like a big success. It seems as though you worked out a process that allows you to communicate while at the same time producing an interesting drawing. I wasn't clear about Georgia's comment but we can discuss that further this evening. Can't wait to see the drawings, can you bring one to class tonight?

Right off the bat, here’s the final image of the first Hyperessay post so I guess it’s only right to start this project update with this image as a talking point. This image sparks some positive conversation last week and I agree that this image have so many layers and conspiracy theories to unfold but that’s for another paper. What Read more →

What you are doing reminds me of some my own work, where you are embedding yourself in the broadcast. You might want to think about how your presence collaged with the imagery might suggest escape, taking flight, moving beyond, however you might want to think about the various aspects of escape. Tonight we will work on routing the signal from Max to the main computer where it will broadcasted to Youtube live. It will be interesting to explore together the possibility of adding another layer to your work in Wirecast Pro, something like what we saw in Good Morning Mr. Orwell where the images from different sources were being superimposed. Should be interesting!!

I went to try a little trial for the final project and tried to choose the right title to ‘hook’ the audiences. Even though, I did it in the afternoon I had a few audiences from different countries.

I realised that it was better to not put the country where you come from because some people might not scroll to Read more →

I agree, I think it makes a lot of sense for you to communicate with the audience while you are putting on makeup. I thought you were actually going to ask the audience to make suggestions as you apply the various cosmetics? It would be very interesting for the audience to engage your identity transformation, which makes it more of a collective work, much like Yoko Ono's Cut Piece. Is it possible that you can capture the recording? We will discuss various methods for doing that tonight.

@ beverley

Previously I was working on collecting screen recordings and thinking about how I can make use of the inbuilt screen recording function on Quicktime to capture my working process. I was quite comfortable with the approach, until I started using Periscope more after the micro-project we did on it a few weeks ago. I enjoy using Periscope quite a lot, Read more →

I think it's now important to document actual recordings and discuss how the act of broadcasting is effecting your working process. I also think the words on paper could play an important part in the work itself, such that the words become part of the work, and then additional words that are in response to the viewer. In that way, the work could become more collaborative. Look forward to discussing!

I tested out my idea to have myself in the physical space while interacting with people in the third space. This essentially makes the paper a interface for me.

I found this to be very difficult to execute. There is a large time difference for me to write or draw a response rather than speak it which often killed Read more →

Interesting problem. I think your idea of using text message abbreviations is a good one, not only speeding up the process, but transposing language from the third space to the first space. Can you also use your voice? I wonder if a combination of spoken word and text might be a solution. We can discuss further if you are having any problems, let me know and we can Skype before next week's class.

So after discussing with Randal, I am now trying to create a virtual vision that uses perhaps apps like Google map to navigate myself soley. So the use of eyes is only for precaution but not for the navigation other than looking at the Google Maps device or app.

So I tried this one in School and it didn’t really go Read more →

I wouldn't worry too much about the cinematic qualities of the video: your project should reflect, I think, the quality we associate with mobile phones, social media in their everyday use. There is a big difference between making a film, and making a guerrilla style broadcast. Think about the live reports on the news that come over the Internet, or when Skype is used on television, it's often pixelated or out of focus, etc. So the key thing is to capture the "immediacy" of the action, rather than trying to frame it in more traditional cinematic terms.
Thanks in support of sharing such a pleasant thinking, post is good, thats why i have read it entirely
