Project Hyperessay 2: Technical Realization

My project is all about playing with the space of the viewer’s screen. Three live cameras will be broadcasting different images, and composited together on Wirecast Pro to form a sort of triptych on screen. The center image will show a live image of my computer screen, which will be playing a pre-recorded video of my soccer boots against the gray Read more →

Interesting that you want to bring the piece into a critique of the live. One thing you might consider is whether to play off of the response of viewers in the YouTube chat. Even though there is an approximately 15 second delay, it would still be interesting to respond to any comments, which would articulate the idea of the live. I am fascinated by how you are playing with space, that seems to be the main point of the piece. How we inhabit electronic space that is fractured and multi-dimensional. Like the third space (because it is not exactly networked, but in a way it is because you are integrating multiple cameras), we can achieve interesting points of contact without actually making physical contact. Since soccer is a sport of physical contact, with the ball, and between the players, perhaps that is another idea to play with: how points of contact function in the third space as opposed to the first space.

For the technical realisation of my project we will set up a three way communication between me, my friend and the broadcast using wirecast, skype, local desktop presenter, a phone, a webcam, the main computer, a pen and large piece of paper.

I would be set up in the classroom with a large piece of paper on the wall and Read more →

This is very thorough and well done. I am wondering if you also want to discuss the drawing itself, or is that supposed to take a back seat to the conversation. For tonight, is Grace prepared to rehearse? We haven't scheduled the rehearsals so can she be on call and ready tonight? We can discuss all this later. I am really glad to see that have very accurately and thoughtfully described the system design and process we discussed. I think it is going to be a very interesting performance.
Grace will be coming tonight at 7 for an hour I think, so she can get set up, but she had something on later tonight so the earlier the better
Great, we'll start off with your piece.

The title post actually fits the whole idea of my project, somehow. I wish to portray the sense of escape from all point of view in my final broadcast. Randall even suggest that this whole process is an escape itself, so here I am, getting away with the technical realisation, escaping all the technical aspect and letting the ‘feel’ of Read more →

Great to see you working your way through both the conceptual and technical complexities of the escape project. I suggest that you consider mapping the work in two ways: 1 - the linear flow, breaking up the performance into segments, transitions and some form of conclusion. This will provide you some necessary structure while still allowing for improvisation and the unexpected. You will want to rehearse through these sections, and as you say, see how each time is new and different. 2 - the layering, this organization of the project is concerned with the many elements/layers of the work, how they combine together, which are recorded, which are live, which take place on your laptop, which on mine. You might want to consider having different amounts of layering in each section, so that there is variety and contrast in terms of the depth and complexity of the work. Perhaps it builds up over time, much like the Cates pieces? Or maybe there is an explosion of layers intermittently throughout, adding an element of surprise. These are the kinds of compositional strategies that will give the piece more variety and richness, and also make your own performance more interesting from your perspective.

Thus, the project is centered around navigating the physical world using the virtual world. The theory that both worlds cannot be present with any individual simultaneously is evident here. So there needs to be a constant flow that links the physical world to the 3rd space to illustrate this theory and the dependency on virtual tools by individuals like ourselves.

Excellent summing up of your project and the journey, literally, you have taken to explore the relationship between the physical world and its virtual representation. Once slight but important note I would make: I would add "fully" to the ability to be present in one world at a time. In other words, I don't believe it is possible to be fully present in more than one more simultaneously, no matter how much we think we can multi-task. Now of course, this is an opinion, not necessarily fact, so in part, your project is an experiment to test and perhaps prove this theory. If the theory is in fact true, it means that people all over the world are indeed challenged by the desire to be in multiple worlds at the same time: their mobile devices and the physical reality around them. Regarding the response of the viewer, in your case, I wouldn't worry about that, since the GPS system and the way you are using it doesn't allow for user feedback. However, those of us in B1-14 will be able to respond back to you via Skype, so perhaps we are your audience and if you want to use us for guidance we can discuss that idea.

I think that my project has developed quite a bit since I came up with my concept. Having to reorganise my schedule and work in short notice and rather close to our project deadline also makes me reconsider what I can do for the final broadcast. I’ll first begin by sharing some materials that I currently have with me:

It's so great to see how you are sharing your experience in Berlin, it looks like you are exactly where you need to be at this stage of your work. So it seems as though you are thinking of shifting from sharing the process of making, to sharing the process of living and learning and researching? And are you planning to add a live narrative component as a voiceover? It wasn't really clear to me what the live component would be exactly. I would encourage you to consider adhering as much as possible to capture the working process, which I think was so interesting in your earlier experiments. Perhaps it would be helpful if we can find time to Skype to discuss exactly what you will present for the final project, since it is still continuing to evolve. You could actually do that tonight during our rehearsal, and we can test the Skype connection at the same time. How does that sound? Send me an email letting me know what time you would like to Skype in so I can schedule it. If the Skype connection works properly, it can of course be rebroadcast via Wirecast.

Through this project, I want to rethink the concept of the webcam in our everyday lives. In Steve Dixon’s essay, the Subversion of Surveillance, the webcam is described as “a camera that takes pictures at set intervals, that can range from 15 times per second to once per hour, then instantly transmits the images Read more →

This project started out focusing on soccer boots, and below is a short experiment I filmed to see if I could get more ideas of what to do for the final broadcast.

This experiment involved me filming my soccer teammates during a training session. After editing and reviewing the footage, I realized that by focusing solely on the soccer boots, Read more →

Nowadays people are always connected to their phone screens, they take their friends with them in their pocket and often ignore the world around them to talk to their friends on Facebook. My idea is to change this and interact with people in the third space while being totally immersed in the first space. Randall Packer (2014) defines the Read more →

I like the idea of communication using voice and emoticons to convey a performance. Perhaps, instead just a voice, you could represent those emoticons without revealing yourself. Do check out https://vimeo.com/60991848 Its quite interesting though there is a lot of distortion that leans towards the negative connotation. But I think when you look at the different types of contextual elements used, you might find something interesting to incorporate for your own performance.
Brilliant! I am in the midst of reading Sherry Turkle's new book: Reclaiming Conversation (you should read it), and that is exactly what you are doing. Your critique of our difficulty to operate in multiple spaces simultaneously is very timely and powerful. One suggestion: add a conclusive paragraph that closes the essay by stating how you think your work will impact our understanding of living in the first and third spaces.

I have experienced several conflicting thoughts when thinking about this project. Firstly, just like during my experience with Periscope, I feel a rather overwhelming responsibility as a creator to broadcast something that will appeal to the majority. I know that this is not possible, but I just get the feeling that my ideas are not good enough to create a broadcast that Read more →

Hello Esmond, I particularly like the idea of you being blindfolded. In fact, this is a good way for viewer participation actually! Okay here's an idea, imagine you are blindfold, there are list of items in front of you or even soccer boots. Make a platform where viewers can send you a message live and instant, most probably a voice message, so when they send a message, it will be played live in your location and so you can hear it. Viewers can send instructional message to you to tell you what to do with those items since you are blindfolded. Allowing the viewer to take control of you has the idea of being vulnerable which has been tackled by many artists and I thought that you should try something like this, through live broadcast!
Thanks Kamarul for the interesting idea! I also like the Google doc, because the idea of a collaborative writing experiment might be fruitful. It's possible that you can invite people to write a story in 10 minutes collaboratively via a shared Google Doc, and you can broadcast the doc as it is being written to share and record the results, both as the final doc and as a video that would record the writing itself, kind of like automatic writing, which was a technique the surrealists also used. We'll discuss further! Also, after we meet today, you should rewrite your essay with an idea you want to move forward with, and be sure to include media and references to readings, since right now the essay is all text and all process. I think it's good that you did this so we can use this first draft as a starting point.

My project will be a live perfomance of me transforming myself into different looks using make up. I would like to translate myself physically in the first space to the language of what can be done in the third space in virtual form. Taking for an example, the changing into a disguise in real time that is shown on  Grand Theft avatar.

I like the idea of making things usually done in private, Public! Having a direct interaction with the viewers through Q & A is very effective but this provided that there are an audience in the first place. You should probably also figure out other methods to engage with the viewers.
Check out https://vimeo.com/46804778. Its a very staged and dramatic scene. However, they not use the mirror not only shows the change of a persona but various personas and it narrates a phase of the person's life - from success to failure to disaster perhaps. Perhaps, you might want to consider entering more than just persona but also time based elements that might reflect more on your own experiences through these transformations
Angel, this is a great idea. What you are displaying her is a form of morphology, or morphing, from one identity to another. I think Jaysee's idea of morphing through multiple identities is an excellent one. Looking up morphing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morphing) and incorporate how you are using this idea in your project. I would like to see you expand the Hyperessay a bit, incorporating one or more works we have explored that might shed light on your idea. Unfortunately, the holiday eliminated our class on multiple identities, however, your discussion of blurring the line between public and private could use more elaboration, and this would give you the opportunity to discuss and contrast the works from that week: JenniCam, Life Sharing, or Tracking Transience.
