Previously I was working on collecting screen recordings and thinking about how I can make use of the inbuilt screen recording function on Quicktime to capture my working process. I was quite comfortable with the approach, until I started using Periscope more after the micro-project we did on it a few weeks ago. I enjoy using Periscope quite a lot, Read more →

I think it's now important to document actual recordings and discuss how the act of broadcasting is effecting your working process. I also think the words on paper could play an important part in the work itself, such that the words become part of the work, and then additional words that are in response to the viewer. In that way, the work could become more collaborative. Look forward to discussing!

For Life Sharing we turned our private lives into a public artwork – Eva and Franco Mattes

Life Sharing (2000-03) is a work by Eva and Franco Mattes where they opened the contents of their computers to the internet for people to share, look at and download anything and everything including the system itself.

Life sharing is about exploring Read more →

Final Project Update 2

@ Nichole

I tested out my idea to have myself in the physical space while interacting with people in the third space. This essentially makes the paper a interface for me.

I found this to be very difficult to execute. There is a large time difference for me to write or draw a response rather than speak it which often killed Read more →

Interesting problem. I think your idea of using text message abbreviations is a good one, not only speeding up the process, but transposing language from the third space to the first space. Can you also use your voice? I wonder if a combination of spoken word and text might be a solution. We can discuss further if you are having any problems, let me know and we can Skype before next week's class.

So after discussing with Randal, I am now trying to create a virtual vision that uses perhaps apps like Google map to navigate myself soley. So the use of eyes is only for precaution but not for the navigation other than looking at the Google Maps device or app.

So I tried this one in School and it didn’t really go Read more →

I wouldn't worry too much about the cinematic qualities of the video: your project should reflect, I think, the quality we associate with mobile phones, social media in their everyday use. There is a big difference between making a film, and making a guerrilla style broadcast. Think about the live reports on the news that come over the Internet, or when Skype is used on television, it's often pixelated or out of focus, etc. So the key thing is to capture the "immediacy" of the action, rather than trying to frame it in more traditional cinematic terms.
Thanks in support of sharing such a pleasant thinking, post is good, thats why i have read it entirely

No, its not porn. No, its not about being a peeping tom. And its definitely not Skype! Whether she is the pioneer of self-ies, we’ll never know. It’s a glimpse into the life of this women and what she does in front of her webcam. And that woman is Jennifer Ringley. In 1998 (when I was just a freaking Read more →

Research Critique: Hasan Elahi - Tracking Transience 2.0

@ Esmond Heng

In this work, Elahi presents us with a website initially showing us his exact whereabouts through the use of GPS tracking on the bottom half of the page and a photo on the top half.

As we can see from this screenshot, the GPS map also includes the day, date, year, time and time zone. The photo is more ambiguous; Read more →

Final Project Update 2

@ Esmond Heng

For my final project update, I’ve been taking photos of my soccer boots and posting them on Instagram together with a few sentences to try and build some kind of narrative. As I was doing that, I’ve also been thinking of how this can relate to the internet and how I can turn this small photo project into my final Read more →

I think that questioning the authenticity of your of your message, confusing it in fact, is very much in line with the Internet and its often contradictory nature. I also like the idea of the voiceover because that is something you can do to turn this piece into a broadcasted work. We can discuss further. Good!
thank you for the idea of the voiceover! See you later Esmond!

Research Critique: Tracking Transcience

Hasan Elahi’s work Tracking Transcience is a webcam project. He developed a GPS tracker and a network device that allows details of his current location to be made available online. Here’s a description of the work:

an embrace of surveillance for its subject’s own protection; Elahi has protected himself from unwanted scrutiny by making his entire life and whereabouts publicly Read more →

Maybe if you were to share with us on how he was mistook for a terrorist at the airport, give birth to this work would make us understand more on his intention. Maybe he is a terrorist after all, making all this images as research for his documentation before the big 'project'. hahaha.
Kamarul, he was mistaken as a terrorist because of his middle-eastern roots. But the project triggered this critique of surveillance and how we are being watched everyday. What is extraordinary, which Beverley points out, is how this project became a critique of the way we capture and authenticate reality itself. By stripping himself (and other people) from his images, they taken on a "realistic" Webcam like quality of his surroundings. Hence, he has become a kind of human surveillance camera, turning the camera on everything around him, rather than himself.

The Great Escape

@ The Anatomy Of Life & Death

Let’s recap: My idea for the final broadcast was the concept of the Escape. In my previous post, I juxtapose a video of a plane taking off and also a scene where the bus is at the Causeway. These two elements of escape in a sense that I am escaping from Singapore but figuratively, I also wish to escape from Read more →

It is really interesting to see all the images you have brought together to articulate the idea of escape. When you see them all together the narrative of escape is very powerful. There are photographs, such as the religious ceremony you wouldn't necessarily associate with the idea of escape, but when juxtaposed with the open window, the train track, or the escalator, you see the connections. Very interesting. Then with the Max patch, I see you are inserting yourself into these situations of escape. I'll be curious to see where you take this idea.

After doing the Jennicam review and having more ideas about the third space, I would like to do a live performance art of me doing make up but I’ll transform myself into different personalities. Eg. I could transform myself to a tom boy, or I could change my hair to purple by wearing a wig.

Wow This is a great idea Su Hui! This reminds me of those make up tutorial online. By mixing the idea of that and also exploring identity in it is very interesting!
Great idea Angel. Now the question I would ask is how a performance like this plays into the portrayal of celebrity. Is there an element of celebrity in how people want to be watched, want to be seen by viewers, want to give up their privacy?
