I tested my idea again using a similar set up to last time however this time I tested it with only one person. I sat on the floor with a pile of paper ready to hang up on the wall as we talked. I also had coloured paint this time to emphasise emotions, while this was handy at  times Read more →

Your test Skype sounds like a big success. It seems as though you worked out a process that allows you to communicate while at the same time producing an interesting drawing. I wasn't clear about Georgia's comment but we can discuss that further this evening. Can't wait to see the drawings, can you bring one to class tonight?

Right off the bat, here’s the final image of the first Hyperessay post so I guess it’s only right to start this project update with this image as a talking point. This image sparks some positive conversation last week and I agree that this image have so many layers and conspiracy theories to unfold but that’s for another paper. What Read more →

What you are doing reminds me of some my own work, where you are embedding yourself in the broadcast. You might want to think about how your presence collaged with the imagery might suggest escape, taking flight, moving beyond, however you might want to think about the various aspects of escape. Tonight we will work on routing the signal from Max to the main computer where it will broadcasted to Youtube live. It will be interesting to explore together the possibility of adding another layer to your work in Wirecast Pro, something like what we saw in Good Morning Mr. Orwell where the images from different sources were being superimposed. Should be interesting!!

I went to try a little trial for the final project and tried to choose the right title to ‘hook’ the audiences. Even though, I did it in the afternoon I had a few audiences from different countries.

I realised that it was better to not put the country where you come from because some people might not scroll to Read more →

I agree, I think it makes a lot of sense for you to communicate with the audience while you are putting on makeup. I thought you were actually going to ask the audience to make suggestions as you apply the various cosmetics? It would be very interesting for the audience to engage your identity transformation, which makes it more of a collective work, much like Yoko Ono's Cut Piece. Is it possible that you can capture the recording? We will discuss various methods for doing that tonight.

This project started out focusing on soccer boots, and below is a short experiment I filmed to see if I could get more ideas of what to do for the final broadcast.

This experiment involved me filming my soccer teammates during a training session. After editing and reviewing the footage, I realized that by focusing solely on the soccer boots, Read more →

Nowadays people are always connected to their phone screens, they take their friends with them in their pocket and often ignore the world around them to talk to their friends on Facebook. My idea is to change this and interact with people in the third space while being totally immersed in the first space. Randall Packer (2014) defines the Read more →

I like the idea of communication using voice and emoticons to convey a performance. Perhaps, instead just a voice, you could represent those emoticons without revealing yourself. Do check out https://vimeo.com/60991848 Its quite interesting though there is a lot of distortion that leans towards the negative connotation. But I think when you look at the different types of contextual elements used, you might find something interesting to incorporate for your own performance.
Brilliant! I am in the midst of reading Sherry Turkle's new book: Reclaiming Conversation (you should read it), and that is exactly what you are doing. Your critique of our difficulty to operate in multiple spaces simultaneously is very timely and powerful. One suggestion: add a conclusive paragraph that closes the essay by stating how you think your work will impact our understanding of living in the first and third spaces.

I have experienced several conflicting thoughts when thinking about this project. Firstly, just like during my experience with Periscope, I feel a rather overwhelming responsibility as a creator to broadcast something that will appeal to the majority. I know that this is not possible, but I just get the feeling that my ideas are not good enough to create a broadcast that Read more →

Hello Esmond, I particularly like the idea of you being blindfolded. In fact, this is a good way for viewer participation actually! Okay here's an idea, imagine you are blindfold, there are list of items in front of you or even soccer boots. Make a platform where viewers can send you a message live and instant, most probably a voice message, so when they send a message, it will be played live in your location and so you can hear it. Viewers can send instructional message to you to tell you what to do with those items since you are blindfolded. Allowing the viewer to take control of you has the idea of being vulnerable which has been tackled by many artists and I thought that you should try something like this, through live broadcast!
Thanks Kamarul for the interesting idea! I also like the Google doc, because the idea of a collaborative writing experiment might be fruitful. It's possible that you can invite people to write a story in 10 minutes collaboratively via a shared Google Doc, and you can broadcast the doc as it is being written to share and record the results, both as the final doc and as a video that would record the writing itself, kind of like automatic writing, which was a technique the surrealists also used. We'll discuss further! Also, after we meet today, you should rewrite your essay with an idea you want to move forward with, and be sure to include media and references to readings, since right now the essay is all text and all process. I think it's good that you did this so we can use this first draft as a starting point.

Project Hyperessay #1: Concept of Identity

My project will be a live perfomance of me transforming myself into different looks using make up. I would like to translate myself physically in the first space to the language of what can be done in the third space in virtual form. Taking for an example, the changing into a disguise in real time that is shown on  Grand Theft avatar.

I like the idea of making things usually done in private, Public! Having a direct interaction with the viewers through Q & A is very effective but this provided that there are an audience in the first place. You should probably also figure out other methods to engage with the viewers.
Check out https://vimeo.com/46804778. Its a very staged and dramatic scene. However, they not use the mirror not only shows the change of a persona but various personas and it narrates a phase of the person's life - from success to failure to disaster perhaps. Perhaps, you might want to consider entering more than just persona but also time based elements that might reflect more on your own experiences through these transformations
Angel, this is a great idea. What you are displaying her is a form of morphology, or morphing, from one identity to another. I think Jaysee's idea of morphing through multiple identities is an excellent one. Looking up morphing (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morphing) and incorporate how you are using this idea in your project. I would like to see you expand the Hyperessay a bit, incorporating one or more works we have explored that might shed light on your idea. Unfortunately, the holiday eliminated our class on multiple identities, however, your discussion of blurring the line between public and private could use more elaboration, and this would give you the opportunity to discuss and contrast the works from that week: JenniCam, Life Sharing, or Tracking Transience.

@ beverley

The title of my project is beverley.tv.

Through this project, I’ll like to rethink the concept of webcam in our everyday lives. All of us now have access to an inbuilt webcam on our laptops, but few of us use the webcam to broadcast or record the nitty gritty details of our lives. Instead, we use our mobile phones to capture these Read more →

I can imagine many webcam cameras in different position and location is recording your every process, in different angles. That would be interesting to see, like how Randall's studio in Washington have many different cameras which he can control which one to show to us in Adobe Connect. It'll be nice if the viewer can control which camera they want to see though.
This is beautifully written and a very powerful statement of plans for your work. We can discuss in more detail, but I would like to make the following suggestions: -- I felt that the description of the work was more to the point at the end, I would place that description up front so we immediately understand the concept of the project. -- Can you provide one more more quotes from the Steve Dixon essay to support your ideas about the use of the Webcam as a form of personal broadcasting and recording of process. -- Are there any other works we have looked at which explore process? I think Cut Piece, Hole in Space, Life Sharing, and Tracking Transience are immediate standouts. I would like to see you support your discussion of the importance of process in your work with references to artworks we have explored.
Yes! I thought Randall's setup is quite a good example of documenting the art process. I quite like your suggestion about how the viewer might have control over, and I think it can be done with another mobile phone with Periscope installed. It will give the project a more interesting perspective too. I shall update this post again to include this.
Noted, thanks Randall! I've looked at the requirements for project hyperessay and I think I missed out including the reference artworks for this. Will update this post with more examples of artworks.

The project aims to reflect on the dependency of technology to ‘navigate’ our lives, literally. Instead of the usual scenario of the physical world being simulated to create virtual world like in Google Maps ( where the map is a representation of the physical world), we use the virtual space to experience the physical world through navigation.

My process for conceptualization Read more →

Amazing idea! This also questions the accuracy and the dependency we have on technology to help us navigate in unknown territory. Despite virtual maps tries to be accurate, sometimes it has fail us and I think this is a good exploration for you to tackle on this issue. Are you going to keep looking down and avoid all those signage which is really very hard to not look? This reminds me of a japanese video I watched a few years back. Basically this group of japanese were using Google Map street views to create games for themselves. So there will be 2 participates sitting in front of the computer with a location on a street view. So how the game start is you need to race each other but the trick is, is to only click the 'move forward' button on the street view google map! It's a very slow and kinda lame kind of self amusement but it's all fun! I can't seem to find the video on youtube and i will let you know when I find it. This is something similar. http://www.theverge.com/2013/5/9/4316188/google-instrument-map-diving-io-2013
I concur Jaysee, great idea! The opening explanation is superb. I think it might be interesting for you to use the class as your surrogate eyes by live broadcasting your navigation and we can discuss in more detail when we meet. Some suggestions for your hyperessay: -- I would like to see you reference specific quotes from the various articles you used to support your ideas. -- Although this may be useful for the next hyperessay, can you display a Google map of where you are thinking of conducting the project? -- Rather than showing examples of what you have done (that might be better for the next essay), add a conclusive paragraph that describes how the project will accomplish the idea of virtual navigation.

I have a plan to escape from this world

My first ever idea was born wanting to do something with the current traffic cameras showing the traffic of the Causeway and the Second link, which is the bridge that connect Singapore and Malaysia. Usually people uses this traffic camera to see how heavy is the traffic before they decide whether is it a good idea to cross the border. Read more →

I like your concept of 'escape' and how you try to convey your definition and its meaning through your photographs. I like how you are going to define this further through your real life performance, which I truly respect. Perhaps, if you could share your perspective like what Jon Cates had done in Bold3RRR, I think it would add more definition. Just a suggestion.
I really like the way you worked through all these ideas to arrive at the end result: a kind of vj of Webcams that signal aspects of "escape." It would be interesting to establish an interface, either with the browser/Max, or purely in Max, to give you a surveillance display, not unlike the ones used by authorities to monitor a building or the streets, etc. So you become, like Paik or the authority, the "man behind the curtain," the vj, the surveillor (not sure about that word), the conductor of Webcams: perhaps you could say an escape artist for all of humanity!
