Project 2: Rhymes

@ A150046

I started with just rushing into the project without any research, and it proved to be a poor idea, as everything generally looked boring, flat and uninteresting.

Tried out clipart instead of real photographic images, but clipart looks flat and difficult to utilize. A little research led to the start of a more surreal approach.

Trying out different blend modes and the Read more →

2D Project 2 — Nursery Rhymes

Monday, Nov 02, 2015 - 02:27:13 am

@ Wang Yinfeng

This project for me is a journey of exploring the beauty of halftone, a discovery of using irrelevant figures to combine into an image which creates a scene, and an approach towards new artistic ideas and art pieces. Overall, there are 3 phases I took in order to express nursery rhymes with images.

Phase 1: Simplicity and pure contrasts

An initial thought come to my mind was using simple icons Read more →

@ Eureka!

This project is to move beyond cliche solutions and habitual reaction to problem solving that leads to predictable results. Our goal is to manipulate, alter and deconstruct the given graphic imagery to transcend its original meaning through the creation of the indicated narratives.

The following picture is my final submission.

I wanted to give this nursery rhyme a dark twist. Thus, I turned the idea of Old Macdonald as a person to it becoming the fast food restaurant Mcdonalds. Therefore, I made the animals seem like they are queuing to enter the barn which is actually a slaughter house and restaurant which is Mcdonalds. Hence, there are burgers flying Read more →

Artist Reference #1 – Arthur Fellig

For this project, I was mainly inspired by a forensic photographer called Arthur Fellig, also known as “Weegee”. Since he was active during the 1930s, his photographs were in black and white and had a seedy/grainy texture.

However, what set him apart from the other photographers was that he had an eerie ability Read more →

Nursery Rhyme The lyrics to a nursery rhyme can be quite whimsical and nonsensical. The main objective of this project is to move beyond cliche solutions to narrate a chosen nursery rhyme using images. I wanted to move away from creating literal images.

Hence, I chose to do a concept of ‘Crime’ investigation where I let my audience to decide what is happening Read more →

Nursery Rhymes, according to Katherine Elwes, have a deeper meaning and not just mere words and lullabies.

The simple, rhythmic verses, usually in a quartet, are easy to read and remember. This style is also apparent in propaganda materials. Singapore post-independent utilises such songs as most people are uneducated at that time.

I am greatly influenced by dadaism and pop art, and Read more →

@ Song Yu

Nursery rhymes are something that we associate with playfulness, and childhood. Naivete and Innocence.

But, most nursery rhymes actually had dark origins, reflecting the darkness of the times they were

conceived in. As such, my aim was to take 2 nursery rhymes, Ring- Around- The- Rosie,

and Humpty Dumpty, giving it my own dark, morbid, Read more →

This project is inspired by the idea of surrealism being put into my representation of nursery rhymes. I’ve decided to do each line based off different nursery rhymes to give more variety to the work instead of telling a story. I’ve also chosen the lines to be less of an action but more of a statement because it gives me Read more →
