Story

A heroine in the third space utopia would fight against the giant, the disturbance, despite her small size and limitation. She didn’t know she could, and would be a warrior.

Inspiration

Japanese Yukata is the inspiration. First is because, I am a practical person. Looking at my schedule and deadlines, I think I should come up with a Read more →

Feliciana, I am very impressed with the way you are developing your costume based on your character sketch. Galina can help you with your questions about the costume, but I like the references to the Japanese warrior or Samurai to create a close coupling between your character and the costume.
Feliciana, I love the inspirations and your own translation for the costume design.I am agree with all your choices that you made for the kimono ,the silver belt and the colorful lights.I have sugestion about the sleeves material to be flexible black or charcoal grey stretch , representing the flexible side of the worier inspired from the famous Bruce Lee "be water" quote taken from the short lived 1971 TV Series Long Street, means to be able to adapt to every environment and situation you are in.

A jellyfish has no ears or eyes or nose and no brain or heart! They do not even have a head. Their body is almost totally made of water and is soft having no bones at all. Jellyfish are invertebrate animals because they do not have a spine or backbone.

Concept

‘Futuristic Fantasy’ was the underlying idea behind my narrative, thus the aesthetic I was for my look was futuristic, edgy yet at the same time elegant and delicate. This is to convey the fantastical beauty in the technology, the wonderment in the third space. To add on to the fantastical look, I might use embellishments. I designed two different pieces, with some experimental preliminary Read more →

Exploration – Thoughts on ‘Touch’

During my exposure to the subject of ‘Touch’, interacting with one another via the third space, I explored my thoughts regarding the topic.

Looking into virtual space made me realised how it was something that we take for granted. It is so integral in our everyday lives, yet we often do not observe how it affects us inside. Read more →

Gladys, you provide many strong ideas for the narrative of Touch. Here is a list of your thoughts for class discussion: Here is a list of ideas for discussion in class: -- Looking into virtual space made me realised how it was something that we take for granted. It is so integral in our everyday lives, yet we often do not observe how it affects us inside. Only when we started consciously taking note of the third space then we realised how it matters… -- No matter how close and seemingly intimate, it will never be or replace the real tactile feeling… Yet, the feeling of ‘touching’ or even ‘hugging’ someone virtually, while not having physical contact – it very surreal and interesting. -- There will always bound to be glitch in the media, at times when we had virtual classroom we might face connection issues e.g. sometimes this glitch might be a beautiful thing -- Overall narrative: Transcendence into the Third Space, a fantastical “utopia” > Disillusionment > Possible endings (closure – fading away/open-ended – entrapment)… the audience would ask, did they get trapped there? What happened to them? -- the audience should feel that the performers are even transcending their own time and space. This can be achieved using the wearables… During the interaction with Angeline, our actions should transcend our current space and make the audience feel as if we are in the same plane as them…. It could be like as simple as making her dress interact when we perform a trigger action. -- the concept of an imperfect third space might be a climax. (dystopia)

My costume design is inspired by bees and bee colonies. I chose bees because I feel an affinity towards these creatures. Bees are like artists. Firstly, bees do not see colours the way humans do. They cannot see red but they view the world in ultraviolet (UV) light as shown below. This relates to how we learn to feel by Read more →

Choose the image that I am gonna glitch. I hate to glitch it because I like the original picture very much.

Making copies.

Open the image in text file and manipulate it by adding to, deleting and substituting its code.

Well done Yuhao! I will go over in more detail later but I wanted to commend you on getting caught up with this assignment.
Statement of meaning: I think it is interesting that you chose a European artist who chose an Eastern subject for the painting. Yuhao, you write: "I hate to glitch it because I like the original picture very much." What is the relationship between your process as a glitch art maker and the final product? How do you think your feelings (in this case, your feelings about loss of the original image) affect your process of making your art? When do you choose to let those feelings guide you in your glitch art making and when do you choose to let those go?

Task#1

Thinking Herself Back: The body is a living archive according to Angeline Young, the artist who created and performed the piece. It told an evocative and striking story of displacement, struggle and migration. There were many Chinese elements in the performance to create the context of Chinese Civil War, for example, the Taoist rituals and her traditional Chinese Read more →

I enjoyed both translations of your dreams and the contrast between robotic and flowing movements! Also, great song choice. I like the how you chose Daft Punk in your second dance which is more upbeat to show a bigger space.
Statements of Meaning: I love the drawing of the whirlwind. There is a lot of motion depicted there and I have a kinasethetic response to the circularity of strokes. If you are interested in using drawings as a road map for choreographing for this piece, please email me and we can discuss. Questions for the artist: Yuhao, your write: "I could feel the space and time that the performer was trying to depict" In what way did you "feel" the space and time? How would you describe "feeling" from watching a video? In response to your question for me : "What is the role of the audience in these two films?" This is a great question. In my work I am interested in implicating the audience as performers in my piece. I do this because I am experimenting with alternatives to 18th century European performances spaces (such as the normative proscenium stage). Instead, I prefer a performance space where people can move around and shift their perspectives. I consider their movement as a part of the performance because the shifting performance landscape informs my creative choices during the piece. Often, my choice to bring the audience closer into my performance allows for a greater sense of intimacy as it disrupts Western cultural expectations for how an audience should behave during a "show." Statements of meaning and questions for the artist combined: Your sketches of your dreams are intriguing because your handwritten script is as dynamic as your movement. I would encourage you to hold on to these drawings so that we can revisit them in the next choreography workshop to develop movement for the performance. How might you use these sketches as you choreograph? I have a suggestion about this. Would you like to hear it? If yes, scroll to bottom of this reply and find the * I see the drawing of the ninja gloves. What concepts relate to this idea of the ninja? What is the relationship of the ninja to the 3rd space? Lots of design inspiration here for the dance and the costume, perhaps? Let's save this for the thinking grid we will make together as we devise movement and approaches to the other elements of the performance (sound, costumes, location). I liked in the dance videos that you used music. I really enjoyed watching the stop and the flow. In the first one, I also really liked the scooter passing behind you. You might think about how environment could affect/produce a dialogue between your body in performance and the choices that you will be able to make during the performance if you implicate the environment...we can talk more about this in the next workshop. Really well done and creative. *Remake video, don't change the choreo but move across the dance space using a word or a sentence from your dream sketch as a floor map. Then when you have done that, choose a descriptive word from your dream journal (or related to the ninja concept) and integrate that idea into the movement performance. For example, you could choose "It works sometimes" and spell it across the floor with your movements and see what happens. Then if you add the concept of "deadly silent like a ninja" how would that change/affect your choreography? We can talk about this more.
Also, thank you for sending me the "Sleep no More" link. My question for you is: How does the video link you sent me capture the actual performance experience you had personally?

I didn’t really managed to dream much for the past week so I will be referring to some old dreams for inspiration.

Statements of meaning: Char, I enjoy the red light and the sense of fragmentation in the first video produced through the angle of the camera. Your use of these angles demonstrates an understanding for the "rule of thirds" we talked about in class. The sparse use of sound in the video both creates a kind of aural framework to experience the video but also creates "space" because the viewer can experience the places in between the sounds. Good job. Question for the artist: What was your experience of making the sound as you were moving? I have a suggestion about the use of sound in performance. If you would like to hear it, scroll down to the * at the bottom of this reply. Second video Statement of meaning: The bird's eye view gives a 2-d quality to the image where your body becomes a landscape. I enjoyed the slow movement. Along with the bird's eye view, it creates almost a voyeuristic quality for the audience. Question for the artist: What informed your choice to omit your face/head/legs in this shot? What informed your choice for costume? How many ways can you animate "disoriented" in your performance (physical gesture/vocal/camera angle/use of costume)? What if you played with the edges of the screen? What if you brought something into the shot that was a different color against the table? This part of my reply is in regards to this video :https://vimeo.com/152461077?from=outro-embed. Statements of Meaning: I experienced this as a commentary on how female bodies in 3rd spaces are subjected to the viewer's gaze. Well done. Questions for the artist: Could you talk more about what inspired you to make this video? Were the bruises intentional? and if so, were they real? *What would happen if you vocalized a sound to describe how you felt in the dream? What if you created a costume that made a sound every time your moved?

Task #1:

What I think the performances “Thinking back herself…” and “Bamboo curtain” by Angeline Young means or represents (I did not do any background research because I wanted to learn more about the work through the artist herself. Please pardon me if I have the wrong perception in my initial stages of exploration.).

Task #1 Statements of Meaning and questions: Rene, you write: "I did not do any background research because I wanted to learn more about the work through the artist herself. " I agree, sometimes you can learn more with an open and undisturbed mind. You asked me: "I wonder what does the white powder represent…could it be snow? (Like the period of the Civil War happened in winter, and the vigorous movements of the foot painting in the white powder represents people running in snow?)" Yes, it does. Also my memory with my grandmother making jiaozi. You asked me: "What does the action of taking off your clothing represent? (Could it be…you are entering a warm house from outside which was cold?)" Yes, Rene, you are very perceptive. I integrate elements of ritual in my performances and clothing is something we engage with everyday. My father used to wear a robe when he would visit us. When he stopped coming home, my little brother wore the robe and we couldn't get him out of it. The jacket represents putting down burdens I don't have to carry anymore.
Task #2 Statements of meaning and questions combined: Rene, there is a lot of dialogue here with lots of emotion. How will you use this in your creative process of envisioning the piece?
Task #3 Statements of Meaning and questions: I enjoyed the simplicity and repetition in the movement. The door behind you provides a scenic framework. I really liked the sounds you created. I really love the handwriting, it is exciting because it conveys your experience of the dream...I especially like the pictures and again, the dialogue you recorded. How did you choose the backdrop for the film? How did you create the sound? What ways can you integrate dialogue into the performance? I have a suggestion. Scroll down to * to view. *What if you performed this playing with the tension in the edges of the screen? What are the ways you might use film projection in this performance? What is the relationship between costume and sound for your work?
Rene, I also loved that you asked yourself questions at the end of task. How many ways can you break the rules for the "neat ponytail" in performance?
Thanks for your suggestion! I will incorporate them in my mood board for my outfit!

Angeline Young Dance

Thinking Herself Back

What I understand from reading the website and watching the video performance is this dance is about her mother’s experience in a forced migration back in China during the Cold War. There were moments when she was not allowed to cry nor make noise; Read more →

Website task Statements of meaning and questions for the artist: Feli, you write: "why is it titled “Bamboo Curtain”?" This was a term used post WWII to describe the impenetrability of China as a Communist Country. I adapted the term to describe my inability to reach my father in China. You write: "Putting the white clothing. I think it’s a male clothing?" Yes, you are perceptive. Galina actually made this coat. I relate to as my father's robe and laying it down means I don't have to carry the weight of his absence around anymore.
Dream Journal Task Statements of meaning/questions for the artist: I find the notion of time in the Zechariah dream really interesting. How would you express your experience of this kind of time in performance? Through movement? In costume? How would you create this feeling? If you created 50 single gestures to express "time" or "Zechariah" what would it look like? What if you strung them together to the monkey dream music? What if you put the movement with the What's Coming music? The drawings of your dreams are great. They can be used as a dance make to choreograph. Hold on to them!
Video task Statements of meaning/questions for the artist: What's coming video I like that you chose to shoot the film at floor level. The movement has a great deal of drama in it. There is a small movement with the shoulder rolling back in the beginning. What does it mean? Monkey Video I love the playfulness of the movement and I notice that you chose a frame for the video. I hear a sound on the floor as you move your feet. What does the sound mean? The video is in b&w. What is the relationship of the color to the dance?
