Conference

Final Thoughts

As we approach the final performance, I shall reflect on the conference that happened last week. It was nice to hear an outsider’s perspective regarding our Touch performance and their interactions with Prof Randall, Prof Galine and Angelina. I thought it was nice to have each of us talk about the concepts Read more →

I think your realization is very true. It is in the process of exploration that you discover the meaning of ideas, such as in this case, the idea of touch in the virtual embrace. The importance of process is something I try to encourage in my OSS classes: the experience of developing a work is just as important as the final result. I think you fully understand and have embraced that idea and I hope it is an idea you can use in your other classes and your work as an artist.

I finally managed to obtain the pictures of me making my costume so I will feature them in this post alongside some of the images from our rehearsal and my thoughts on it.

For my costume, I started out with cutting the plastic and arranging them according to the different shades of yellow, orange and Read more →

This is an excellent, detailed account of the whole process of the construction of your costume/wearable to its use in the dance rehearsal. It is illuminating to see how the behind the scenes work is done to create a techno-costume and then see how it is used for live performance. Also, very interesting analysis of your impression of the telematic space and how you felt the spaces merging together through networked media.

Continuation of dress-making

So far I had the shape of the dress along with the mesh and collar. The next steps were to add decorations to enhance the design of the dress.

Boiling of extra organza, there was insufficient

To achieve an ombre effect on the skirt, I used this spray paint

Very interesting to see you exploring spontaneous movement. I think that's an excellent idea and relates back to when Angeline had everyone analyzing their dreams. The costume is superb and your documentation is detailed extremely well. You have done excellent work and I look forward to see the wearables integrated in our final session on Thursday.

Beautiful work. Your documentation of process is wonderfully detailed with excellent photography. I think these photos are like artworks themselves! You have commented on the dress construction, music, and performance and I am interested to know how you feel all of these elements are integrating together in your work. This is something you can address in the Project Hyperessay: Conclusion.

Continuation of dress making
Performance – “Look at ME”

My performance starts off from a quiet chanting of “Look at me” as I make four different hand actions.

The four actions are:

moving my hands in a rotational way before me along the level of my torso (While saying “Look at me!”). when I want to project my idea to someone, my hands move outwards to Read more →

Excellent, and it's great that you documented your movement. I would ask you to think about how this need to have someone look at you ties in with the theme of the project: touch in the virtual embrace. How can you direct your movement not just at the rest of the ensemble, but at Angeline as well across the digital divide. Your costume is very beautiful. Excellent work.

Documentation of the skirt making so far…

I tried out the method of melting plastic together by laying plastic over one another and ironing it out using a layer of baking paper.

Collected different shades of yellow and red plastic and tore them into pieces.

I proceeded to stretch the plastic and crumple it Read more →

Very strong visual quality. I really like abstract nature of your costume, the vivid colors over the black. It's like a painting. I look forward to seeing how it will work with your movement. If you haven't yet connected with Angeline for your Skype session, you should do so. Just send her an email. Excellent work.

Excellent documentation: your photographs are very revealing of the process and should be quite helpful if you need to refer back to previous steps. I would also suggest that you document your dance movements. I am not sure if you have had your solo session with Angeline, but it is very important to incorporate your dance work into the project updates, so that you remember the movement and you can work on it on your own. We will discuss this in class on Thursday. Excellent update!!

Before I continue,

I would like to thank my awesome teachers: Galina – for guiding me in the making of the dress and for the overflowing love she has for us Naga – on the programming of the lilypad mainboard, and advices on the type and quantity of electronics I should get Angeline – for guiding me in creating my solo performance Read more →

Excellent progress! And thanks so much for all your nice remarks. Your dress is superb and looks like it will work well with the performance. I would also suggest that you include in your project update the movement you are developing in collaboration with Angeline. I am not sure if you have developed your solo yet, but based on what we did in class last week, I would urge you to discuss the movements (you were very dramatic!!) so that you can remember them and continue to work on them in between rehearsals so they will be refined by next time. Great update!!
