Continuation of dress making
Performance – “Look at ME”

My performance starts off from a quiet chanting of “Look at me” as I make four different hand actions.

The four actions are:

moving my hands in a rotational way before me along the level of my torso (While saying “Look at me!”). when I want to project my idea to someone, my hands move outwards to Read more →

Excellent, and it's great that you documented your movement. I would ask you to think about how this need to have someone look at you ties in with the theme of the project: touch in the virtual embrace. How can you direct your movement not just at the rest of the ensemble, but at Angeline as well across the digital divide. Your costume is very beautiful. Excellent work.

Documentation of the skirt making so far…

I tried out the method of melting plastic together by laying plastic over one another and ironing it out using a layer of baking paper.

Collected different shades of yellow and red plastic and tore them into pieces.

I proceeded to stretch the plastic and crumple it Read more →

Very strong visual quality. I really like abstract nature of your costume, the vivid colors over the black. It's like a painting. I look forward to seeing how it will work with your movement. If you haven't yet connected with Angeline for your Skype session, you should do so. Just send her an email. Excellent work.

Excellent documentation: your photographs are very revealing of the process and should be quite helpful if you need to refer back to previous steps. I would also suggest that you document your dance movements. I am not sure if you have had your solo session with Angeline, but it is very important to incorporate your dance work into the project updates, so that you remember the movement and you can work on it on your own. We will discuss this in class on Thursday. Excellent update!!

Before I continue,

I would like to thank my awesome teachers: Galina – for guiding me in the making of the dress and for the overflowing love she has for us Naga – on the programming of the lilypad mainboard, and advices on the type and quantity of electronics I should get Angeline – for guiding me in creating my solo performance Read more →

Excellent progress! And thanks so much for all your nice remarks. Your dress is superb and looks like it will work well with the performance. I would also suggest that you include in your project update the movement you are developing in collaboration with Angeline. I am not sure if you have developed your solo yet, but based on what we did in class last week, I would urge you to discuss the movements (you were very dramatic!!) so that you can remember them and continue to work on them in between rehearsals so they will be refined by next time. Great update!!

What I keep saying about Media&Performances to other people:

Oh my God, my UE is so difficult. First, coding is a whole new thing to me. Second, fashion is a whole new thing to me. So, the module is a whole new world (sing Aladdin). But whoa, you have no idea how much I have learned…

No pain Read more →

Your process seems to be full of ups and downs! I agree that the second version of the costume looks like a better fit. I would definitely consult with Galina as to why your electronics burned out, sorry to hear about that. Plus, don't forget to make note of your dance movements: remember the costumes and wearables are supporting your performance, so you need to be be sure you don't forget the solo work you went over with Angeline. I would also suggest that you practice the movement and even expand on it for our next rehearsal. Excellent update!

About

For the project Touch, I got the role of being the heroine. Hence, based on the initial design that I have made, the kimono-inspired outfit may fit a female warrior. Using $2/meter (the cheapest fabric available), I created a prototype of the mini kimono dress.

Excellent, who would have thought you would be learning how to make fashion at NTU! Give the costume some time before you judge it, remember, it's a learning experience and a work-in-progress. I think it's looking great, but then I'll let Galina give her more expert opinion.
I am absolutely agree with Randall, your first prototype looks great! And at the end of the day what matter the most is for you to have better understanding of the proses: creating the pattern ,testing it and making further decisions . I like your sensativity for the material, your opinion on the tectile quality, softnes and drapability .Please do not worry that your design is simple .To create simple but harmonious design is more difficult than complex but unclear. I am looking forward to see your compleate design!

Story

A heroine in the third space utopia would fight against the giant, the disturbance, despite her small size and limitation. She didn’t know she could, and would be a warrior.

Inspiration

Japanese Yukata is the inspiration. First is because, I am a practical person. Looking at my schedule and deadlines, I think I should come up with a Read more →

Feliciana, I am very impressed with the way you are developing your costume based on your character sketch. Galina can help you with your questions about the costume, but I like the references to the Japanese warrior or Samurai to create a close coupling between your character and the costume.
Feliciana, I love the inspirations and your own translation for the costume design.I am agree with all your choices that you made for the kimono ,the silver belt and the colorful lights.I have sugestion about the sleeves material to be flexible black or charcoal grey stretch , representing the flexible side of the worier inspired from the famous Bruce Lee "be water" quote taken from the short lived 1971 TV Series Long Street, means to be able to adapt to every environment and situation you are in.

Yuhao, excellent, very detailed documentation. I look forward to seeing how your motion sensors are incorporated into movement during the performance.
Great work, lots of testing, I love your curiosity! I am very excited to see the final outcome of the costume with the embeded electronics .
