After looking through Prof Galina’s book on textures and fabrics, I got inspired and did a sketch of my costume. I really like the look of burnt plastic meshed together so I decided to incorporate that element in my costume design.

On Thursday, I decided to work with the top Read more →

Fantastic Charlene! I can see you are going through a very precise process of putting together your costume, I look forward to the results. And that was very helpful to include next steps in your Project Update.
Fantastic idea to use materials that are very different but yet very effective.Welcome to the exciting world of using heat to create new hot textiles!I am very curious to see the resolts. Just make sure you use baking parchment to cover your plastic before you use the hot iron. Try layeing several piesesvaryously yellow plastics into a small sheat of baking parchment, lay onother sheat of baking parchment on top and iron slowly and continuously with hot iron for approximately one minute. the plastic will melt and stick to it self. While the piece is hot you can stretch and shape it. You should weare gloves if you are handling the hot plastic. If you like to achieve the ,,lacy efect '' you need to hold the iron longer , and constantly check for the resolt.Have Fun!Don;t forget to bring the baking parchment, we do not have any at B-17.

Very good, you're costume is coming right along! You might want to consider your character sketch as you move along with your design, keeping in mind that you are going to be performing and exploring the possibilities for role playing.
ok, sure! I will try that for my next project update, thanks Randall!
Tiffany you did great at the rehearsal , I like how your skirt became part of your dance !Now we know that we need to attach the electronics very well and continue with your top and bonning!

Wearable Technology

To embark on our project on wearable technology, I went to buy cloths and electronics.

Choosing the necessary electronics

I had to choose between two types of lilypad main boards, one with USB port for charging and programming and another without the ports but with more holes. I decided to get the one with the ports so I don’t need to Read more →

Touch

What is “touch” in the third space?  How does it feel to “touch” without physically touching? How do our digital representations in the third space connect to our corporeal bodies during the “touch”? How has the “virtual embrace” transformed the way in which we engage in social media and digital communications?

To get better answers to these questions, we have Read more →

Yuhao, I really enjoyed reading your poetic hyperessay that reveals many of the main concepts and ideas. Here is a short list of your ideas for discussion in class: -- an exchange of personal histories via the virtual embrace in the third space -- (the dancer) became a composer or musician playing the music with her body/costume/space as a musical instrument -- music created (triggered) by Angeline… each of us will react… based on our personal experiences… to “touch” each other through generated sounds... build a sense of affiliation and mutual understanding… a harmonious blend of personal narratives. -- borrow the simpleness and directness from (Eiko and Kumo’s) dance.. a way of communication -- "Touch" is not fundamentally about technology… we hope to have better answers to the amorphous and intangible nature of human communication in the third space

My Idea:

In my opinion, touch is a shock that can be comforting. When my skin brush across someone else’s, I feel an electric shock traveling up my nerves. This tingling sensation gives me goosebumps and a strong emotion of excitement. The tremors running through my body sounds like an alluring melody sang in high-pitch vocals.

At the same time, the tremor Read more →

Xin Hong, very interesting essay, and I was particularly impressed with the way you drew inspiration from our study of bio technology. This is a list of ideas for discussion in class: -- touch is a shock that can be comforting… This tingling sensation gives me goosebumps and a strong emotion of excitement… at the same time, the tremor can make one fearful… followed by numbness and the gradual transition to desensitization... However, the desire to touch and to be touch is innate in us. -- In a virtual world, in separate spaces, we are limited to touch through our physical boundaries. -- Imagine, in a futuristic world, how will touch be like? We can interact across different spaces. Maybe we can even interact in our dreams… We take on different personas inspired from the skills we learnt from mother nature. (mimicking bio-technology) -- We interact with each other while we are in separate cubicles through seeing and hearing. -- Somewhere the movement bring about sound. Somewhere, there is sound. Somewhere this sound causes movement… and the cycle repeats.

Concept

‘Futuristic Fantasy’ was the underlying idea behind my narrative, thus the aesthetic I was for my look was futuristic, edgy yet at the same time elegant and delicate. This is to convey the fantastical beauty in the technology, the wonderment in the third space. To add on to the fantastical look, I might use embellishments. I designed two different pieces, with some experimental preliminary Read more →

Exploration – Thoughts on ‘Touch’

During my exposure to the subject of ‘Touch’, interacting with one another via the third space, I explored my thoughts regarding the topic.

Looking into virtual space made me realised how it was something that we take for granted. It is so integral in our everyday lives, yet we often do not observe how it affects us inside. Read more →

Gladys, you provide many strong ideas for the narrative of Touch. Here is a list of your thoughts for class discussion: Here is a list of ideas for discussion in class: -- Looking into virtual space made me realised how it was something that we take for granted. It is so integral in our everyday lives, yet we often do not observe how it affects us inside. Only when we started consciously taking note of the third space then we realised how it matters… -- No matter how close and seemingly intimate, it will never be or replace the real tactile feeling… Yet, the feeling of ‘touching’ or even ‘hugging’ someone virtually, while not having physical contact – it very surreal and interesting. -- There will always bound to be glitch in the media, at times when we had virtual classroom we might face connection issues e.g. sometimes this glitch might be a beautiful thing -- Overall narrative: Transcendence into the Third Space, a fantastical “utopia” > Disillusionment > Possible endings (closure – fading away/open-ended – entrapment)… the audience would ask, did they get trapped there? What happened to them? -- the audience should feel that the performers are even transcending their own time and space. This can be achieved using the wearables… During the interaction with Angeline, our actions should transcend our current space and make the audience feel as if we are in the same plane as them…. It could be like as simple as making her dress interact when we perform a trigger action. -- the concept of an imperfect third space might be a climax. (dystopia)

Concept Overview

I intend to explore the feeling of contracting and expanding through the manipulation of digital space and costume textiles. Through the use of sound and video distortion, the feeling of contracting and expanding can be further amplified and appear to swallow the performer, giving an off-screen presence to technology. Through this piece, I hope to investigate how video technology can create Read more →

Very powerful and evocative. Here is a list of your ideas to discuss in class: -- I hope to investigate how video technology can create a powerful presence even in the absence of a physical body and how this presence can interact with the performer in a predatory-prey relationship. -- I was mainly inspired by a video of a snake swallowing a deer whole. -- The video itself become(s) a menacing character and I would like to utilise similar technique to do this and have it prey on a physical being (the performer) instead. -- I think sound can help to structure the narrative by showing a variation in the feelings of the “off-screen predator”. -- Although I would have liked to see you include a reference to a reading, I thought your project hyperessay was outstanding and deserves a perfect score.
