Chinese Buddhist Art – What is it?

Buddhist art – Art forms that depicts subject matters that originates from the religion of Buddhism.

You have chosen two nice objects to compare! But, we need to work more on that introduction. It needs more details. You have a few interesting ideas hidden in your paragraph on similarities--which of these is going to be your thesis? Your paragraph on differences needs to be much more stronger--what is different? subject matter, composition, patronage?

Nice introduction! But, you need to speak of bronze as well in the introduction. Have they really found a commoner's tomb from the Shang period that has Shang bronzes? Your current claim is a good start but it has the verb "is." Does it really come from your comparison? The claim should be framed as a comparison (i.e. similarities and differences).

*Good introduction. How can you flesh out that first part about "explanation of Chinese tomb art?" *I am glad to see that you will discuss the Qin dynasty briefly before zeroing in on the tomb warriors. *The current claim is a bit grand. You can do it for a Ph.D. thesis! Let's try to write a short comparison essay. So, frame your claim as a comparison. Include similarities and differences.

This is a good start. I appreciate your detailed introduction. Curious--were bronze vessels really used in daily life? Please check on this. Claim is too broad for now. You could be writing a Ph.D. thesis on this topic! But, you do seem to have an interesting idea lurking behind the question "what are the meanings behind these changes?" It is still too broad. So, please find a claim from the nice comparison you have chosen to do by framing your claim as a comparison (i.e. similarities and differences).

What is Chinese Buddhist art? Compare two sculptures and address the question of change in art and religion when Buddhism arrives in China. The images need to be from lecture or from the Asian Civilizations Museum.

Realised I’ve done my essay wrongly (skewering more towards theology and the comparison only occupies a small portion) so I redid my proposal.

Your claim currently is a fact. No one can disagree with you. You need to come up with a claim that you can argue for. Do you need to discuss religious tolerance in your introduction? What does it have to do with your claim? The sculptures you are using do not have any bodhisattvas... You seem to have an idea in your statement about how earlier images are Buddhas and later images are bodhisattvas. How can you make this broad claim more specific?
Hi Sujatha, Yup I've decided to change the second image (the one with Shakyamuni and Prabutharatna) to that of Guanyin (will do up another post containing the image from ACM). For the claim I was going along the lines of whether Chinese Buddhist art is the sinicisation of Buddhist art coming in from India or the Indianisation of Chinese art. Will think of another claim just in case and post it on an updated proposal!

I really enjoyed Team One’s presentation, as they took the effort to recreate the experience they had while visiting the Sri Mariamman Temple, from the puja to the scent of jasmine. Utilising Google 360° Tours really immerse the whole class into getting a better insight into the layout of the temple and the activities going on inside.

Kudos to you guys and can’t Read more →

Good introduction. Begin with a definition and a brief history of your topic! Good start for a thesis--frame it as a comparison with similarities and differences! But, let's be more specific. Let's take care of your first phrase--What is special about this time period? What is influencing both painters? Ask yourself whether you want to do the lumping method? Look at the examples of comparison essays and paragraphs on NTULearn in the folder called "Second Assessment." Is there another way to organise tis essay?
