@ A150046

My team, Gekkie, Raj, Son Tra and I created a visual response to Shin Bijinga – No.12 Dancing with Fan by Yosho Chikanobu.

I believe this is our first time doing such a project, and actually exhibiting it (although it was only for 5 hours), but for me, it felt really exciting because it was also my first time creating Read more →

Reflection

To be honest I was quite excited for this project as I felt it had lots of room for appropriation, which is something I quite enjoy doing and have done in previous projects. (https://oss.adm.ntu.edu.sg/awong011/2016/03/22/research-paper-on-chinese-paintings-lol-jk-project-2-final-post/) I feel that appropriation, if done well, can better express information about an object/person by letting viewers see it in a totally different light.

@ 風鳴る翼

Initially, I believe like many groups, we had the idea of doing “Singapore landscape” on Japanese screens, when I first imagined the product, it thought how cool would it be! However, after attending the lecture on Japanese art, Bijingas, which was introduced during the lecture, caught my attention. I took this idea to the group and we started having discussions Read more →

I am really grateful to have project mates that think alike and work on the same pace!

This artist statement has come a long way! It could use more editing and explanation, but at least it is not all over the place. Good job!

Group members: Andrew, Chen Yue, Fern, Ziyu To follow up with my previous post on the ceramics plate, my team and I have decided on the following claim:

The function of Chinese ceramic plates has changed from decorative items to common utilitarian wares over the years.

And below, I will be covering a brief proposal on our concept, some images of the Prototypes that Read more →

Excellent post! I think I finally understand the project: high end Chinese ceramics made affordable through paper plates. Some points to think about: *Chinese ceramics were functional items in the past as well. But, perhaps what you are commenting on is that the luxurious quality of the piece that you saw at the ACM? Some of these enamelled pieces were for royalty. *When might we use these ceramics? CNY? Moon festival? Or, would there be paper plates for the major festivals in Singapore for the four different communities? *What is the significance of using your paper plates as opposed to buying cheap ceramics from Ikea or Daiso? *I appreciate the interesting idea of depicting actual food items and disposable objects--but why? Is your team trying to make us think twice about disposable items? Why the food? Are we to choose certain plates for certain occasions based on the food designs? The plates look lovely and I look forward to seeing them in person!

So, which artist statement will your group go with? At least, now I understand that it is a digital painting. The Artist Statement needs to be tighter. Look at the excellent examples in G6 (Tranny Dairies) and G7 (Pop Art Haniwa). Why do the images go back and forth? Is there a reason for the disruption? Are you using both sides of the one screen?

Very thorough post from proposal to reflection! The artist statement could use a bit more editing--it seems to be all over. I also have a hard time envisioning the final product. I think there is too much going on in the project--I don't understand why the Chinese Taoist yin-yang concept is included. Is Singapore supposed to be male or female? And Japan? Final function of product is interesting. Glad you included images of the prototype--I look forward to seeing the real prototype today!

Freedom To Be

In this age where LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) rights is gaining traction, the T in the equation still faces alienation, even within the LGBT community. Local events to raise awareness pertaining to LGBT issues such as Pink Dot tend to have a strong emphasis on gay and lesbian issues. Freedom To Be addresses this gap by taking inspiration Read more →

Good job! We need a transitional sentence at the end of the first paragraph. Otherwise, there is a sudden jump. How about something like this: Freedom To Be (in italics) addresses this vacuum by inviting viewers to think about a a bodhisattva, who subverts our current understanding of gender identity. Let's edit it the second paragraph a bit more: This artwork is a visual response to the (what's the date? from where?) limestone Bodhisattva statue of possibly Guanyin in the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore. It consists of printed .gif squares that document a male in the process of transitioning into female, Freedom To Be explores the transition of Guanyin from male to female form. What exactly is your artwork exploring? Guanyin's transition or the transition of a current male figure? Or, both? Elizabeth Stuart, a pioneer in queer theology, argues that Guanyin, who is still widely revered by Buddhists, plays an important role in defying societal norms on gender. Buddhism is “queer before queer theory ever began”. who is saying this? This is further compounded (word choice: does compounded have a positive meaning?) by the fact that early Mahayana scriptures (too Christo-centric; word choice) view gender as malleable. Guanyin, a figure whose essential manifestation is female, is also? understood as male; her situation parallels that of transgender (male-to-female), who believes that they are intrinsically female but born in a male body. Hope the editing helps! I appreciate the interactive nature of the prototype.
Hi Sujatha! Iskandar edited the proposal as above. Could you perhaps check on it? On another note, the word choice for "Mahayana scriptures", would it be okay to say "Mahayana sutras" instead? (Because I think the Christo-centric word you were referring to was 'scriptures'?) Thank you so much for the editing!
Good. A few more suggestions: This artwork is a visual response to an 8th-Century Tang dynasty limestone Bodhisattva sculpture from the Asian Civilisations Museum, which is most likely to be Guanyin.--this which is modifying the museum. This sentence is too long and confusing: Elizabeth Stuart, a pioneer in queer theology, argues that Guanyin plays an important role in defying societal norms on gender with her disposition yet is still widely revered by Buddhists, even going as far as stating that Buddhism is “queer before queer theory ever began”. Is she known for "due to her attributes of bountiful kindness and acceptance,?" She is like a mother. Yes, sutras would be best. Or simply texts. Good job!
