Team 1 presented on hindu temple, Sri Mariamman Temple in class today. The team did a great job in presenting their information. I like how simple and direct their slides were, which allowed me to understand the information properly. Being a singaporean, i am very ashamed to say that I did not know much about this temple until today. I Read more →

@ 風鳴る翼

My favourite temple will be Tong Whye Temple located at Jurong East which is quite near to my house. Every year, my family will go to the temple at least twice to pray to “Tai Sui” at the start of the lunar new year, and before the year ends. For my family, we believe that we have to pray to Read more →

@ A150046

My team and I have reviewed our presentation structure and came up with a new and improved version!

Firstly, we will start by introducing what the Tang shipwreck is (background), then concentrate our presentation on 2-3 particular ceramic pieces that we feel are vital to learn about from the shipwreck.

The information we will include about the ceramic pieces are as follows:

Good! So, what does design refer to? Shape? Color? Pattern? What is the main idea that holds the presentation together? What is the connection/transition from the first section to the second section?

“What did the rest of you find most interesting in today’s excellent presentation on the Hindu Temple?”

I think the team did a great job of setting the atmosphere at the beginning of the presentation with the bananas and the jasmine scent. I really like the interactivity and i was thoroughly engaged throughout the presentation.

The presentation was also very well organised Read more →

“What is your favourite Buddhist Temple in Singapore? Why?”

Unfortunately, i don’t have a favourite Buddhist temple because i’m not a Buddhist and so, i did not know how to put down my response to this question at first (which was why i took so long). Coincidentally, I had a conversation about Buddhist Temples with my uncle when i visited my grandma’s during the Read more →

My favorite Buddhist Temple in Singapore would be the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple in Chinatown. I was able to visit this temple while my team and I went to visit the Sri Mariamman Temple in Chinatown as well. The Buddha Tooth Relic Temple was a huge and beautiful temple. The outside of it looked amazing and the inside was very nice Read more →

Thoughts about Tang shipwreck gallery presentation

@ Ola Señorita

Hey Sujatha!

My team and I visited the Asian Civilisation Museum today and the exhibition about the Tang shipwreck was fantastic! We didn’t manage to find the Dehua kiln ceramics, but instead there were some examples of pure-white porcelain which is quite similar.

We decided on a rough structure for the presentation, which will begin with basic information about the Tang shipwreck Read more →

I am glad to hear that you all had a chance to see the Tang Shipwreck gallery--it is indeed wonderful! The curator of this gallery was supposed to speak next week at ADM. But, sadly that talk has been now postponed to March 9th. However, if you plan to work on Chinese ceramics as your research paper topic, your team can certainly still attend the talk. The structure is good, but it is a bit ambitious. Please remember that you have only 20 minutes. You can keep some information for the Q & A, in hopes that someone will ask a question about your presentation. What is the main point you are trying to convey in this presentation? The following section seems a bit repetitious: "followed by a more in-depth exploration of the designs on the various ceramics. This will be supplemented with 2/3 examples of ceramic artefacts found in the exhibition and some information on the choice of design/material/stye of illustration used/possible influences etc."

Team 2: “What does the author discover through formal analysis?”

The author discovered that “engravings were conceived as suitable counterparts to Islamic paintings held in the Mogul imperial collections“.

This is evident in instances in which engravings are paired with paintings (fig.1)

Fig. 1 : Two small print featuring “female subjects seated before windows”, paired with painting of a comparatively larger size.

Evidence that they were, as asserted, Read more →

“What did the rest of you find most interesting in today’s excellent presentation on the Hindu Temple?”

Presentation-wise, I find the interactivity interesting. The significance of the jasmine scent, banana fruit-offering, and panorama of the temple contributes an element of fun and yet remains relevant and educational.

Content-wise, I am most intrigued by how dedicated the people are to their gods/goddesses. Washing Read more →
