@ Artefactually Lost

Hidden in Plain Sight, “You Are What You Carry” Jan Chipchase

As an avid user of the mobile phone, I’ve took for granted its features and capabilities and rarely the thought occurred to me of how people in the past could have lived day to day without the convenience of it. I felt that the chapter had overall provided a new outlook Read more →

@ thisisht.

Part 1: Read Ch. 4 from Chipchase Hidden in Plain Sight.  Write a response and two questions and post it by midnight on Saturday to OSS.

The reading this week touches upon the behaviour of people to their belongings. The subjects being discussed are really relatable and interesting to rediscover, as I did.

As I was reading the chapter whilst commuting back Read more →

Hi Heng Tong! Really like the the post on the Hololens! It would definitely open up more possibilities in doing 3D work and the augmented reality within the space would surely help in gauging and comparing the size and etc with the surrounding space. The only problem I could see from it would be the cost for consumers gauging from the available consumer VR prices. Peace!
hi! thanks for sharing about the hololens, it's really exciting to see where it could lead us. could potentially reduce the cost and waste of designing processes. but ya i agree with nik on the cost :(

Reflection | Jan Chipchase : You are what you carry

@ Pham Nhat Binh

In this chapter, Jan had introduced very interesting concepts of range of distribution, centre of gravity and point of reflection to explain our carrying behaviour, which is about knowing where things are, being able to access them at the right time and feeling secure about their safe keepingg. Range of distribution is the distant people feel comfortable to Read more →

Assignment 5: Response to You Are What You Carry

At the start of the chapter, I did not expect the author to also classify digital objects as your own personal belonging. It feels like a belonging is something that we attach meaning to, and develop a “relationship” with (i.e. a wallet received on your 18th birthday, or a phone bought with Read more →

Good insights, especially on the second question about how over-convenience empowers us but make us more hadicapped as well. I think that it is important for us to rely on our own "natural" abilities as afterall, technology often comes with periles like breakdowns etc.

Reading: Ch. 4 from Chipchase Hidden in Plain Sight

Upon reading the first paragraph of the text, I found it strangely familiar and realised that we have watched a TEDtalk by Chipchase some time ago. Similarly, the TED Talk talked about the trend of ownership > consideration > carry > use. I found this visualising of the circles really interesting and as I go on Read more →

Assignment 5

@ katiekohketian

Part 1 Reading

Carrying behavior is about knowing where our belongings are, being able to access them at just the right time, and feeling secure in their safekeeping. This point makes me recall of the time era before smartphones and social media swept the world, where people could “survive” without having their mobile phones with them. Comparing this to people today, Read more →

the omnitouch technology looks interesting! might have the potential to recognize objects it's projecting on and bring about more interface and interaction.
I also found the omnitouch concept really interesting, I tried looking more into it but I found nothing new from it since 2011, I guess it only remained a project, it's a shame. I would really like to know if it was for lack of budget or if it was a problem of feasability, because the technology would really be interesting and beneficial in everyday use. The closest thing to this that we have today are smartwatches but their interest is very limited in my opinion, as you can only complete very few actions (read messages / mail etc..)

Hello! I really love that the example given of Bobby, which actually promotes the idea of carrying more stuffs rather than eliminating stuffs to carry as explored in the chapter. Also, the use of GPS to aid in the challenge of being the very best really adds to the experience of gameplay!

PART 1: Reading Response

The four drivers – security, convenience, reliability and peace of mind which the author listed out as the fundamentals on which we decide what to carry in our bags is essentially what majority of the urbanites would base their daily decisions on as well. For example, where to stay or what to eat. Most people would want to Read more →

I like your second question about the mindless clicking on the internet to predict user's behaviours and preferences as it sets me thinking about how technology afterall is not "perfect". The lack of emotional attributes to technology is one thing that is worth thinking as we move into ubiquitous technological society.
