Part 1 Reading

Carrying behavior is about knowing where our belongings are, being able to access them at just the right time, and feeling secure in their safekeeping. This point makes me recall of the time era before smartphones and social media swept the world, where people could “survive” without having their mobile phones with them. Comparing this to people today, Read more →

the omnitouch technology looks interesting! might have the potential to recognize objects it's projecting on and bring about more interface and interaction.
I also found the omnitouch concept really interesting, I tried looking more into it but I found nothing new from it since 2011, I guess it only remained a project, it's a shame. I would really like to know if it was for lack of budget or if it was a problem of feasability, because the technology would really be interesting and beneficial in everyday use. The closest thing to this that we have today are smartwatches but their interest is very limited in my opinion, as you can only complete very few actions (read messages / mail etc..)

Read Ch. 4 from Chipchase Hidden in Plain Sight.  Write a response and two questions and post it by midnight on Saturday to OSS. Based on the lecture on Place, Location and Ubiquitous technology, post an example of a product, service or design concept and post it on OSS.

Hello! I really love that the example given of Bobby, which actually promotes the idea of carrying more stuffs rather than eliminating stuffs to carry as explored in the chapter. Also, the use of GPS to aid in the challenge of being the very best really adds to the experience of gameplay!

The four drivers – security, convenience, reliability and peace of mind which the author listed out as the fundamentals on which we decide what to carry in our bags is essentially what majority of the urbanites would base their daily decisions on as well. For example, where to stay or what to eat. Most people would want to Read more →

I like your second question about the mindless clicking on the internet to predict user's behaviours and preferences as it sets me thinking about how technology afterall is not "perfect". The lack of emotional attributes to technology is one thing that is worth thinking as we move into ubiquitous technological society.

Part 2) Based on the lecture on Place, Location and Ubiquitous technology, post an example of a product, service or design concept and post it on OSS.

I think an area in which there is still a lot to do concerning Ubiquitous Technology and Wearable Technology is the health sector. Smartwearables which enable you to monitor you health aren’t really widespread Read more →

Hi, thank you for sharing about the new technology that can analyze people's sweat! It would definitely help if so many data could be gathered without even poking a needle. However, will it has a planted GPS in it? Might be useful to find the whereabout of the patient should he had a sudden health attack..
Hi!   After reading your post (which was interesting) I can see how wearables connected to smartphones  in the medical sector also could be used as a new way to interact with your doctor which both can be the doctor contacting you or the patient which directly can send the data to the doctor if he/she has any concerns about his/her health. Another technology I think of when I read the post which could be used in the same way is Smart Textiles. This could be another way to monitor your health and maybe also be combined with a smartphone product/system.

The fourth chapter of Jan Chipchase’s book Hidden in Plain Sight deals with how we interact with what we carry. The notion of range of distribution is quite interesting in particular here in Singapore because it is very different from what I’m used to in France. For example leaving your belongings on a table, while you get your Read more →

Week 5 Assignment

@ NikSnixe

This weeks reading Ch. 4 from Chipchase Hidden in Plain Sight looks into the mind set of how people interact with their belongings and how it changes their behaviors.

One of the things I found interesting was the range of distribution as a tool to conduct user study as well as the space around it. It would certainly be a useful technique in Read more →

Hi Nik! Really love the Ikea Augmented Furnitures concept as it shows how one furniture will look inside the real setting of your own personal space. This can truly help in your decision of whether to purchase it. Many times when visiting the showroom, the displayed furnitures may look really good there but it may not fit your home setting. Also, the size of the furniture can be gaged.

There is no disputing the fact that given the choice of only three items to carry, we would naturally go for the wallet, keys and smartphone. As suggested, it is who we are as humans and shows what matters most to us. But often times we carry much more than that we need just in case. This in Read more →

The Living Tomorrow video is really interesting because despite having all this control over personalising the kitchen and it functions, it still doesn't appear very 'homely'- mostly just from the white plastic decor. The video was posted in 2010 and claims this will be a real concept in 5 years, much like a lot of the futuristic home designs we see, it still feels very far off! But some cool ideas, I like the smart mirror! Makes good use of time.

This concept involves communicating with personal devices and location sharing which your friends, which makes it easier to find each other and reduce time on texting a specific location to meet. Furthermore, it also allows the user to change position and make the meeting point more dynamic. In a way the meeting point becomes the person, rather than Read more →

I like the Direct Me app! Makes so much sense to merge a map and texting functions as I find meeting up with people is probably what I mostly use my phone for.

This weeks chapter by Chipchase Hidden in Plain sight investigates the carrying mentality the general people have today.

The article brings up different aspects and terms including carrying behavior, range of distribution, center of gravity, point of reflection, yo yo strings and so on.

I have learnt that understanding carrying behavior can be fruitful to a designer as it affects people differently and in different Read more →

Reading Response – Chipchase, Hidden in Plain Sight, You are what you carry CH4.

Again Chipchase has encouraged me to think about the ordinary and mundane tasks I perform in everyday life, in a way that I haven’t before.

I was able to relate to many of the points he discussed -I too have the ‘keys, money, phone’ point of reflection before leaving my Read more →
