My inspiration would be Steve McCurry, the photographer who shot Afghan Girl for the cover of National Geographic in 1985. I think what strikes me the most about his work is his portraiture style and the way he shoots people in general.

Above is a picture of my dad’s brother from the early 90’s! I had chosen this picture because I thought it had a very endearing quality that can be found in family photo albums. I was drawn to the harsh shadow caused by the flash and the subject being out of focus, both of which were probably unintentional decisions.

In the restaging of my father’s photo from when he was a baby, I mainly concentrated on trying to recreate the diffused light from the right. Original at the bottom, c. 2000 when Empress Place was being renovated. Image differs a little in perspective due to different lens used, the earlier photo was probably with a 35mm, the recreated photo was with 24mm on 1.3x crop, and the original photo was taken at a lower height.

The above is a photo from 1987, featuring my dad’s friend. I thought it would be interesting (and convenient!) to recreate it at today’s NTU South Spine.
