Ed Ruscha: Every Building on the Sunset Strip
One of my personal artist-book highlights is Ed Ruscha’s ‘Every Building on the Sunset Strip’ from 1966.
It is a small zig-zag fold book with the dimensions 18.0 x 14.2cm (18.0 x 750.0cm fully opened). He captured every building along Sunset Boulevard and merged the images manually into a long panoramic picture. The other side of the road is upside down and the numbers of the houses are written underneath the images along the comparatively big white space between the images. 1000 copies were printed for the first edition and the second reprint in 1971 contained 5000 copies.
Have a look also at his Twentysix Gasoline Stations or Thirtyfour Parking Lots!

Another zig-zag fold book is Hilary Judd’s ‘Shoe Box’ from 2006. Here is a full description.

Artist books could be also digital

And here is a good overview for binding
