Context

Upon the completion of the mid term projects, we were tasked to further develop our concepts with the help of technology for our final project. My mid term project was titled Dis-harmony, a simply anamorphic perspective installation of a bonsai tree made out of found objects. The concept behind it was simple: to find harmony in the chaos that Covid-19 Read more →

Rui Hong, I think you did a commendable job on your final project and it has evolved considerably since the first iteration.  There is potential to further push the poetic qualities of your project using sound and movement.  What is interesting is the metaphor of static/noise used both visually and aurally to convey the notion of ambiguity.  This could be explored further to greater impact I think if you were to design your own soundtrack.  Well done and a good effort overall!

Let’s make some fabric sensors !

First off, all credit to kobakant, for their amazing work. Superb repository! I am not going to talk about how this thing works, because I didn’t invent it, and also they do it much better. Hard-soft connections can be found Read more →

Iteration: In-Sync

@ Raw & Ugly !

Problems:

transmission of touch was limited to only sitting up and down sound was almost non-existent distance was too close for much impact

Ideas:

overhead shelter that doubles up as simple mode of interaction; grid of free-moving leaves above, supported by net-like structure, users can tug on the net either side, like a primitive and limited form of interaction a double sided acoustic guitar in the Read more →

Design

I started the design in CAD, after having a loosely similar sketch. In the first iteration, the sitting area was much wider, basically a 1m x 1m square. After all the design was done, I prepared a cutlist, and upon realising the ridiculous amount of wood the design required, I had to go back to the digital board Read more →

Good mid-term project work and documentation well done. You may think about using this structure as a starting point, and modify it for the final digital project.
Thank you ! 😊

Sync (Longing, connection)

2 players sit across each other they are connected by touch via the ropes, and can feel each other’s movements the string with cone provides audio feedback between players

Night scenario

An illuminated trough of water in the middle that can highlight the movement of the strings.

the seating areas can be slightly illuminated to provide a hint of participants

Yixue, I think you have potentially very interesting possibility in this setup for your project.  As we discussed in class today, the key will be how the materials (rope or other material) will work to realise the concept.
yes i am excited bout bringing it to realisation as well!

Overarching Thoughts — bodies & Virtuality

Rafael Lozano Hemmer talks about the concepts of ‘body’ and ‘space’ and how they operate in similar manners and are not necessarily discrete entities. A physical space or monument though ‘permanent’, its meaning and purpose is subject to the course of time and mirrors the change in society. Hence it is as equally Read more →

What is it that is being communicated?

The fact that these buildings were purposefully chosen; the close proximity that allows viewers to walk through them communicates the curator’s intent on emphasizing the handful of buildings that were involved in the show. This was likely to communicate the richness of culture that the young nation have cultivated in the rather short amount Read more →

Illuminating Embodiment: Thoughts

@ Rui Hong

“Lozano-Hemmer’s work is informed by histories of art, science, technology and diverse philosophical currents. Because of its conceptual complexity it cannot be described as an illustration of any specific school or theory, yet consistently it reveals ‘the fullness of space’ in relation to both the body and technology.”

Lozano-Hemmer’s work challenges the supposition that buildings control bodies.

In exploring virtual openings in architecture, Read more →
