2nd Experimental Painting

Composition

Directional lines

I would like to create concave directional lines for the composition. I tried to sketch the symmetrical composition but felt that it look too unnatural.

The asymmetrical composition looks more interesting and feels more like a natural scenery.

Mountain, Acrylic on Canvas, 2017

This painting was inspired from my dream. I had a dream where I stood at the top of the mountain feeling powerful, which seems to flow out from within me. The view was beautiful surrounded by snowy mountains.

I used palette knife to create most part of the painting. It helps to bring the thick and icy texture and feeling of snow into my painting. I used a dry brush to create the clouds with the intend to make it look light and flowy.

The use of purple and pink for the mountains give off a strong & powerful feelings, which was what I felt in my dream. The colourful sky express the beauty of the inner self revealing itself.

The snowy ground at the bottom creates directional lines that is inviting to the viewers, the same goes for the clouds above. The directional line are pointing towards the center (the mountains). I did not include myself as a figure in the painting, however the mountains act as a metaphor of me expressing and revealing the inner power I had. The foreground (bottom part) of the painting highlight the place I was standing in my dream, I added some texture lines (in blue) as a metaphor of footprints (aka I was there).

1st Night Painting

ADM Rooftop, Oil on Wood Panel, 2017

This artwork was painted from the view at ADM rooftop. To balance out the composition, the buildings with lights were placed on the left and right side of the painting. The main composition was the three different layers of the sky, the mid area (buildings, trees, lights) and the foreground of the slope at the bottom of the painting. The focus point would be around the white street light area, which may include the buildings on the left and the tree at the center. The trees and the other vegetations were in different tones. Some were in black and some were added with a hint of blue or green or yellow to give a slight variation.

2nd Still Life Painting

Oil on Wood Panel, 2017

This second still life painting is quite challenging. It was a struggle to paint the stripes of the cloth and the shadows. However, I like the overall colours selection of the items placed together. The focus point could be the green cup that was surrounded by the pink flowers. Another focus point would be the red bowl with directional lines (the strong contrast of cream and black lines) pointed towards it.

White Still Life

Oil paint on wood panel, 2017

The composition was based on circular forms and diagonal grids. I used both warm and cool grey tones. The focus point (bowl at the center) had more cool grey tones than the rest of the painting. The blue colours create more visual interest to the painting. The point of entry could be from the bone (top) or the harsh shadow (bottom), which leads to the smaller cups (left) and then towards the bowl (center). The blue dragons on the bowl also helps to strengthen the focus point.
