Int Dev Project Update #10(Final): The Emplifier

The Emplifier is a headset/with a visor that helps people who does not have PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) experience how the recovery of PTSD patients who experienced sexual assault feel like. Many people advice PTSD patients not to think about the incidents but it is easier said than done, thus, this project is focuses on the road to recovery experiences of PTSD patients rather than the cause.  Below is one of the symptoms often present in Rape Trauma.

Avoidance of being touched, and shying away from loved ones. Sudden movements may startle.

For this device, I wanted to try to mimic the sense of touch/proximity in relation to the wearer so I focused on the distance from the wearer. When a person is around 40cm from the wearer, The Emplifier will close its visor and ear muffs. Surprisingly, the muff were able to provide some sound cancellation as commented by the actor in the video (Credits to HongSheng).  Relating back to experiences of patients suffering from severe PTSD (mostly rape or molestation victims), they tend to lock themselves out from the reality when anyone touches them. They feel irksome about being touched as it triggers flashbacks from the incidents they experienced.
