Project Brief: To use the concept of line to interpret eighteen emotions. Emphasis on methods of drawing, techniques, textures, mark making tools and substrates.
Final presentation
4 A3 portraits, with 18 60mm x 257mm strips.
1. Awkward
a general feeling of unease and fidgety discomfort
Sharp, jagged edges are used to illustrate the feeling of being ill at ease, shapes are packed tightly and overlapping, giving a sense that there is no way to escape.
2. Bizzare
strange, unusual, unorthodox and queer
Organic movement of swirls were paired with constant, repeated diagonal strokes in the background in an unusual paring to bring out the bizzare quality. Swirls are also lumpy in texture and thicker in some areas than in others, making it seem alien and unsystematic.
3. Spontaneous
performed or occuring as a result of impulse or inclination
I thought of flowers blooming where they want, whenever they want, how they want. As such Iwanted to capture the movement of petals unfurling outward from a tight bud. I also related the feeling of spontaneity to fireworks exploding in the night sky, bursting forth through the darkness in a pattern unpredictable to the o bserver.
4. Distracted
An inability to focus
Eyes looking in different directions and eventually closing shut, because everything else is suddenly way more interesting than the work at hand. Random scraps of newspaper have been superimposed to show short lived attempts to concentrate before becoming distracted again.
5. Embarrassed
awkward, self-conscious, ashamed
Embarrassed is feeling out of place in a foreign environment and ashamed of your stark differences and personality quirks that prevent you from blending in. A conspicuous segregation from the others, sticking out like a sore thumb, expressed through using different materials, objects and shapes.
6. Anxious
an inescapable feeling of worry, nervousness, and unease
Anxiousness means sleepless nights tossing and turning and thinking what if. Anxiousness feels like your insides scrunching up and knotting and twisting, tight with worry and unable to loosen up, and the struggling of opposing thoughts (shown in black and white) in your mind.
7. Lyrical
melodious, flowing smoothly like a tune
Lyrical is smooth and soothing and captivating in it’s billowy movements, illustrated here by the direction of the lines twisting and twirling around each other. Different densities to make the illustration less flat and two dimensional and gives it more depth.
8. Sloven
messy, haphazard, lazy
The mess one sees when one is too lazy or unmotivated to clean up after oneself, jumbled up and strewn across and getting tangled. A general feeling of unshakable dirt and grime, shown here as bits of discarded thread, tissue paper and eraser dust on a surface of spilled ink that was left to dry.
9. Systematic
methodical, orderly, standard
Synonymous with scientific, mathematical and logical, this is composed entirely of straight lines. These are the most direct and to the point, with no room for error.
10. Psychotic
a mental state extremely detached from reality
Pulsating black globs of mysterious substances expanding and contracting in your field of vision, originating from an unknown source and for an unknown purpose. Lines blending in and out of each other, creating a surreal and dizzying image.
11. Fragile
easily damaged or broken, brittle and delicate
Handle with care, for the slightest wrong move could rip the tissues and break the threads holding this slip together.
12. Ambiguous
unclear, can be perceived in more than one way
Varying values of paint and disunified direction of the arches make this a dubuious photo. What is the overall general direction of the image? Is it light or dark or neither?
13. Indecisive
foggy and indeterminate, ambivalent
Different painting styles and techniques used next to, or on top of each other, creating the sense that the artist can’t decide between this medium or that, this stroke or that.
14. Turbulent
constant but unstable movement, dynamic
Sinister and dark rumblings, churning internally before erupting in a rush of pressure. Lines are messy and chaotic because they are constantly being flung about and pushed together, caught up in uncontrollable, rough movements.
15. Nonsensical
illogical, ridiculous
Whimsical and following whatever catches your fancy, playful and inquisitive and unwilling to be restrained by convention.
16. Sensual
appealing to the senses, silky and seductive
Imagine being ensnared by the dangerous charm of languid movements and smooth language, running across your skin and your ears like a silk ribbon.
17. Exhausted
tired, spent, lacking the energy to continue
Decreasing momentum and willpower that started off strong but gradually fades away into nothing.
18. Aggressive
violent, unstable and forceful
The battered outcome of a confrontation with a rabid wild animal, sustaining gashes and gaping rips and scores of scratches.
