DN1002 – Assignment 3 – Ego – Results and reflections



#1: The potato
I am represented here by a potato, describing myself as an inwardly static person. The potato goes to art school and is irreversibly changed, even though deep down it is still the same thing.
#2: The glass of iced water
I am represented here by a glass of iced water, being an individual who is both intolerant of cold and hot temperatures.


#3: The paintbrush
The paintbrush represents me as a student in ADM, facing a mountain of deadlines which is symbolised by the bars that represent a Gantt chart normally used to keep track of schedules. The final frame, similar to Assignment 1, uses textures to describe the stress of trying to meet these deadlines. In order to show the “damages” left by attending school, I left the brush hairs and bits of paper left behind after vigorously working the paper surface with the paintbrush in the first frame and watercolours.
#4: The cat
This set of frames illustrates my identity as a “cat person”, and my fondness for the rain which is a source of calmness and reflection.

For me, this project was quite a big step from the previous assignments due to the use of colour, which was entirely absent both in My Line is Emo and Forrest Gump.

It was relatively challenging to have to utilise colour harmonies, as I tend to use colours in a more instinctive manner (instead of having to scrutinise the techniques) in my work.

Nonetheless, this is a definitely a good way to round off the course, and I’ve to say I’ve really enjoyed DN1002!

DN1002 – Assignment 3 – Ego – Colour theories and harmonies

After going through 2 assignments based exclusively on black and white (and greyscale), it’s refreshing to be able to work on something in colour!

As this is something new for the module, it is definitely important to understand the usage of colours to ensure our work stands out.

Colour harmonies

Complementary – the use of colours opposite each other on the colour wheel

DN1002 Assignment 2 – Part 2 – Iteration


In this post, I will describe the process of iteration from the initial ideas, towards the final design. The quote featured here is “If we can’t make memories, we can’t heal” from Memento (2001).

In the beginning, I attempted to find a way to visually describe the idea of memories. I first thought of a simple graphic of a brain, which led to the following design:


However, this seemed a little too overt in meaning. I then tried to relay the “memories” concept using neurons instead and I used simple outline drawings of them:


This led to the first version which is slightly closer to the final design, with plasters representing “healing”:


This design however didn’t seem to gel together well, as the plasters looked a little too bold and dominated the design too much. After a consultation, I decided to include a textural form of depiction of “healing”, which turned out like this:


As this seemed a little sparse, I decided to duplicate the human torso and neurons and placed them in a hierarchical arrangement, which led to the final version…..



DN1002 Assignment 2 – Part 1 – Quotes

In detail:

Torment – severe physical or mental sufferingtorment

A brush was used to create repeating swirls to describe the feeling of being tormented by something. The few black patches represent the deep suffering ascribed to this emotion.

Panic – sudden or uncontrollable fear or anxiety, often causing wildly unthinking behaviourpanic-final

A piece of sponge was used in this work. Black patches are placed amidst a dark grey background, to create a sense of being placed in a fog of war in the viewer.

Anxiety – a feeling of worry, nervousness or uneaseanxiety

Smooth, dark swirls on a grey background are used to illustrate the overthinking that would occur in someone suffering from anxiety.

Suffering – the state of undergoing pain, distress or hardship

A fork was used to create scratch marks that represent bloodied hands.

Uneasiness – lacking a sense of securityuneasiness-final

Using a paint knife, similar, repetitive marks were created. A stray, slanted mark shows a sudden change that describes uneasiness. The line is left incomplete to emphasise the lack of certainty.

Passion – an intense emotion, a strong feeling for something or someonedsc_0549

A lighter was used to create burn marks, illustrating how passion, while powerful, can also be damaging.

Fear – an unpleasant emotion caused by the threat of danger, pain or harmdsc_0548

White paint was used over a black background, to demonstrate the frequently used phrase “white with fear”. The feeling of fear would mask all other emotions being felt.

Enthusiasm – intense and eager enjoyment, interest, or approvaldsc_0564

Strong and blocky shapes made using the brayer rollers are used in this example to illustrate the energy of an enthusiastic individual.

Alienation – being withdrawn or isolated from othersdsc_0565

Made using an ink marker, a lone spot is placed in the middle of a space created by a line that splits apart, describing the sense of being alienated from others.

Bliss – perfect happiness, great joydsc_0554-copy

Leaves were used in this work to evoke a sense of calmness, which contributes to the sense of bliss.

Jealousy – an envious resentment of someone or something, for their perceived advantagesjealousy

A paint knife was used in this work to create straight marks that appear like needle marks, showing how jealousy could feel like for an individual.

Contentment – a state of happiness and satisfactiondsc_0567-copy

Broad marks were made using a brush, illustrating a sense of stability.

Optimism – hopefulness and confidence for the success of somethingimage4364

Alternating dark and white spaces are used to illustrate waves and the idea of “bouncing back” from a problem, hence describing optimism.

A strong black bar is used to denote the shock and surprise in this emotion, while the white space with patches of black describes the confusion that may occur.

Frustration – the feeling of being upset or annoyed as a result of being unable to change or achieve somethingfrustration

Black marks are used to evoke a sense of being uneasy with a situation. The sharp, straight marks represent an individual’s frustration at being unable to solve an issue.

Grief – intense sorrow, especially caused by someone’s deathdsc_0552

On a strip painted black, sandpaper was used to create scratches that show the pain felt by someone who would’ve lost a loved one. Tears are made in the strip to emphasise this.

Hopelessness – feeling extreme despairdsc_0551

White paint is used to create a texture of ice and snow, as if the viewer is trapped in a cold, freezing environment where there is no hope of returning to civilisation, thus illustrating hopelessness.

Melancholy – a feeling of pensive sadness, typically with no obvious causedsc_0550

Glue is used to simulate raindrops and marbling is used. The grey denotes the sadness felt and raindrops tend to evoke a less optimistic mood.

Elation – great happiness and exhilaration

Zeal – great energy or enthusiasm in pursuit of a cause/an objective


Contentment – a state of happiness and satisfaction

Pride – a feeling of satisfaction derived from an achievement

Optimism – hopefulness and confidence about the future/the success of something

Surprise – feeling of astonishment and shock

Grouchiness – bad tempered, tending to complain and grumble


Fury – wild, violent anger

Envy – a feeling of discontented or resentful longing for someone else’s possessions or qualities, etc

Agony – extreme physical or mental suffering


Hopelessness – having no expectation of good or success, despairing

Guilt – a feeling of responsibility for doing something bad or wrong

Alienation –  a feeling of isolation, estrangement

Artist featured in project brief:

Cai Guo-Qiang

Born in 1957 in Fujian, China, Cai is known for using explosives in his artwork. He also choreographed the fireworks show of footprints leading towards the Olympic stadium in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
