Project 2: Forrest Gump, Process: Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke

Princess Mononoke (Japanese: もののけ姫 Hepburn: Mononoke-hime, “Spirit/Monster Princess”) is a 1997 Japanese epic historical fantasy anime film written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki.

The story follows the young Emishi warrior Ashitaka’s involvement in a struggle between forest gods and the humans who consume its resources.

I love this movie. The forest spirt, the strong female protagonist and how it reflects to many political and environmental problems we have now.

This art piece was inspired by Lady Eboshi a strong cool woman who hunts beasts and leads the city of Tataraba which she established. She’s also very a strong female who understands the injustice of the women’s positions in society.

Other quotes:

“Cut off a wolf’s head and it still has the power to bite”

“Even if all the trees grow back, it won’t be his forest anymore. The Forest Spirit is dead.”

“Now watch closely, everyone. I’m going to show you how to kill a god. A god of life and death. The trick is not to fear him.”

“Ugh, I smell like a human.”
